Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s. In each of these stories I see elements of my own story, that of leaving my birthplace and family and creating a new life in a different culture and in a different language.

The child of Italian immigrants and an award-winning scholar of Italian literature, in the book My Two Italies Joseph Luzzi struggled to create or find his own identity from an early age. Even more problematic for him was "which" Italy to "choose," the one he inherited(继承) from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel, or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture.

The choice becomes even sadder as in his professional life he becomes a scholar of Italian literature and culture. He describes episodes of his youth that show the clash between the first and the second generation immigrants that are both funny and tragicomic(悲喜剧式的). These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph's desire to "fit in" the American culture. Joseph's visits to Italy as a student and then as a scholar deepen the divide between his two Italies and highlight his quest for identity.

The author's personal changes are full of quotes and comments on the cultural and political landscape of Italy. I find that his insights on contemporary Italian cultural and political phenomena are particularly interesting. In this book, Joseph touches or comments in depth about several issues concerning Italian life, such as the relationship between dialects(方言) and the official "Italian" language, and the Southern "question" or the uneasy interaction between Northern and Southern Italians.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is personal, moving, educational and entertaining. I hope you will enioy it too!

Plastic recycling is a hot topic, But what's the real face behind if? You diligently sort your rubbish; you dutifully wash your plastic container; then everything gets thrown in a landfill or in the ocean anyway, According to one aalyx1s, only 9% of all plastic ever made has likely been recycled. Here' the kicker: the companies making all that plastic have spent millions on advertising campaigns lecturing us about recycling while knowing full well that most plastic will never be recycled.

A new investigation by National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)reports that the large oil and gas companies that manufacture plastics have known for decades that recycling plastic was unlikely to ever happen on a broad scale because of the-high costs involved. "They were not interested in putting any real money or effort into recycling because they wanted to sell raw material, "Larry Thomas, former president of one of the plastic industry's most powerful trade groups, told NPR. There is a lot more money to be made in selling new plastic than reusing the old stuff. But, in order to keep selling new plastic, the industry had to clean up its wasteful image. "If the public thinks that recycling is working, then they are not going to be so concerned about the environment, "Thomas noted.

We have been successfully convinced that people start pollution and people can stop It and that if we just recycle more, the planet will be OK. To some degree, that s right there must be a level of personal responsibility when It comes to the climate emergency. We all have to do our part. But individual action is a tiny drop in a heavily polluted ocean. We need systematic change to make a real difference. And, more than anything, we need to change what we value.

We may wish some memories could last a lifetime, but many physical and emotional factors can negatively impact our ability to keep information throughout life.

A new study published in the journal Psychological Science found that people who feel enthusiastic and cheerful, which is called "positive affect" by psychologists, are less likely to experience memory declines as they age. This adds to more and more research on positive affect's role in healthy aging.

A team of researchers analyzed data from 991 middle-aged and older adults who participated in a national study conducted at three time periods: between 1995 and 1996, 2004 and2006, and 2013 and 2014.

In each period, participants reported on a range of positive emotions they had experienced during the past 30 days. In the final two periods, participants also completed tests of memory performance. These tests included recalling words immediately after their presentation and again 15 minutes later.

The researchers examined the association between positive affect and memory decline, taking account of age, gender, education, and depression.

"Our findings showed that memory declines with age, "said Claudia Haase, an associate professor at Northwestern University. "However, individuals with higher levels of positive affect had a less steep memory decline over the course of almost a decade, "added Emily Hittner, a PhD graduate of Northwestern University.

Areas of future research might address the pathways that could connect positive affect and memory, such as physical health or social relationships.

(1) What does the underlined word "This" in paragraph 2 refer to? A. People's age. B. A new study. C. Positive affect. D. Memory decline.
(2) What did participants do in the final two periods? A. They shared what they did in the past thirty years. B. They expressed what influence they had on others. C. They finished some forms about their memory. D. They repeated the words that they had seen.
(3) What did the researchers find from the research? A. A well-educated person is easy to lose memory. B. A person who always feels tired has poor memory. C. High levels of positive affect can delay memory loss. D. People memorize the most information within 15 minutes.
(4) What may the future research deal with? A. How to link positive affect with memory. B. How to improve physical health. C. How to increase social skills. D. How to avoid negative feelings.
