We may wish some memories could last a lifetime, but many physical and emotional factors can negatively impact our ability to keep information throughout life.

A new study published in the journal Psychological Science found that people who feel enthusiastic and cheerful, which is called "positive affect" by psychologists, are less likely to experience memory declines as they age. This adds to more and more research on positive affect's role in healthy aging.

A team of researchers analyzed data from 991 middle-aged and older adults who participated in a national study conducted at three time periods: between 1995 and 1996, 2004 and2006, and 2013 and 2014.

In each period, participants reported on a range of positive emotions they had experienced during the past 30 days. In the final two periods, participants also completed tests of memory performance. These tests included recalling words immediately after their presentation and again 15 minutes later.

The researchers examined the association between positive affect and memory decline, taking account of age, gender, education, and depression.

"Our findings showed that memory declines with age, "said Claudia Haase, an associate professor at Northwestern University. "However, individuals with higher levels of positive affect had a less steep memory decline over the course of almost a decade, "added Emily Hittner, a PhD graduate of Northwestern University.

Areas of future research might address the pathways that could connect positive affect and memory, such as physical health or social relationships.

(2) What did participants do in the final two periods? A. They shared what they did in the past thirty years. B. They expressed what influence they had on others. C. They finished some forms about their memory. D. They repeated the words that they had seen.
(3) What did the researchers find from the research? A. A well-educated person is easy to lose memory. B. A person who always feels tired has poor memory. C. High levels of positive affect can delay memory loss. D. People memorize the most information within 15 minutes.
(4) What may the future research deal with? A. How to link positive affect with memory. B. How to improve physical health. C. How to increase social skills. D. How to avoid negative feelings.

Regarded as the "loneliest tree in the world", the Sitka spruce (云杉) on uninhabited Campbell Island lately has kept good company with a team of New Zealand researchers who believe it could help unlock secrets of climate changes.

The nine-meter-tall spruce holds the Guinness World Record title for the "remotest tree" on the planet. It is the sole tree on the shrubby, windswept island, 700 kilometres south of New Zealand in the Southern Ocean. It's the only tree for 222km around; its nearest neighbour grows on the Auckland Islands.

Although classified as an invasive species, for radiocarbon science leader at GNS Science, Dr Jocelyn Turnbull, the tree could be a valuable tool to understand what is happening with the uptake of CO2 in the Southern Ocean. In order to measure CO2 concentrations, taking samples of the atmosphere is the best method, and can be complemented with radiocarbon dating samples of deep water. But it comes with limitations. "You can't collect air that was there 30 years ago, because it is not there anymore," Turmbull said, "So we came up with this idea of using tree rings. Plants, when they grow, take CO, out of the air by photosynthesis (光合作用) and they use that to grow their structures and the carbon from the air ends up in the tree rings."

This is helpful when there is an abundance of established trees, but those are a rarity in the Southern Ocean. Enter the Sitka spruce—the southernmost tree, and the team could find it would offer up good data. "It's grown a lot faster than anything else in that region and the rings are bigger and easier to separate out and get a record from."

As for the tree's lonely status: the description may be in the eye of the beholder. "To get to the tree you have to walk through elephant seals and sea lions, penguins and albatross," Turnbull said. "The tree doesn't look lonely...it looks quite content actually."

(1) What is special about the tree? A. It measures nine meters wide. B. It is the only tree on a vast land. C. It grows on the Auckland Islands. D. It owns the Guinness title for the "loneliest tree".
(2) What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A. CO2 builds up in the tree rings. B. The Sitka spruce is a native species. C. Samples from water are usually inaccessible. D. Photosynthesis stops the plants absorbing air.
(3) What may Turnbull support? A. The tree coexists with a variety of animals. B. The tree grows well because of suitable climate. C. It's unwise to use tree rings as an indicator of CO2. D. It's possible to measure previous CO2 concentrations directly.
(4) What is the main idea of the text? A. Trees are of great significance to scientific research. B. The "loneliest tree in the world" is not lonely at all. C. Global warming has a far-reaching impact on creatures. D. A remote Sitka spruce may help us learn about climate changes.

The Best Insect Repellent Sprays (驱蚊液) in 2023

Nothing ruins a pleasant outdoor experience quite like annoying mosquitoes sucking blood on your arms and legs. Sure, bug spray is great and all. After numerous tests, we found four bug sprays that stood above the rest.

Proven Insect Repellent Spray ($16.97 at Home Depot)

Picaridin-Proven's active ingredient, comprising 20% of its formula (配方)-is one of the best at repelling bugs. Proven Spray's smell is well nonexistent. It is easy to forget that we even apply this spray-besides the fact no bug would dare touch our skin.

3. 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

We all know fresh is best when it comes to food. However, most produce at the store went through weeks of travel and covered hundreds of miles before reaching the table. While farmer's markets are a solid choice to reduce the journey, Babylon Micro-Farm(BMF)shortens it even more.

BMF is an indoor garden system. It can be set up for a family. Additionally, it could serve a larger audience such as a hospital, restaurant or school. The innovative design requires little effort to achieve a reliable weekly supply of fresh greens.

Specifically, it's a farm that relies on new technology. By connecting through the Cloud, BMF is remotely monitored. Also, there is a convenient app that provides growing data in real time. Because the system is automated, it significantly reduces the amount of water needed to grow plants. Rather than watering rows of soil, the system provides just the right amount to each plant. After harvest, users simply replace the plants with a new pre-seeded pod(容器)to get the next growth cycle started.

Moreover, having a system in the same building where it's eaten means zero emissions(排放)from transporting plants from soil to salad. In addition, there's no need for pesticides and other chemicals that pollute traditional farms and the surrounding environment.

BMF employees live out sustainability in their everyday lives. About half of them walk or bike to work. Inside the office, they encourage recycling and waste reduction by limiting garbage cans and avoiding single-use plastic. "We are passionate about reducing waste, carbon and chemicals in our environment," said a BMF employee.

(1) What can be learned about BMF from paragraph 1?  A. It guarantees the variety of food. B. It requires day-to-day care. C. It cuts the farm-to-table distance. D. It relies on farmer's markets.
(2) What information does the convenient app offer?  A. Real-time weather changes. B. Current condition of the plants. C. Chemical pollutants in the soil. D. Availability of pre-seeded pods.
(3) What can be concluded about BMF employees?  A. They have a great passion for sports. B. They are devoted to community service. C. They are fond of sharing daily experiences. D. They have a strong environmental awareness.
(4) What does the text mainly talk about?  A. BMF's major strengths. B. BMF's general management. C. BMF's global influence. D. BMF's technical standards.
