When you're bored, you might start playing with a ball or other objects. Such behavior is common in people. Other animals like it too—that's why a dog fetches a stick, or a cat bats at toys. Play is an enjoyable way to pass the time. A new study finds that it's not just mammals that like to play. Bumblebees（大黄蜂）do it too, making them the first insects known to play. 

In the study, Hiruni Samadi Galpayage Dona, an insect expert, did an experiment using 200 untrained bumblebees to see if they might play. Of those, 45 would be marked with a number when they emerged as adults. 

A pathway was set up from the bumblebees' nest to a feeding area. One side contained small wooden balls that rolled. The other side had the same number of balls, but they were stuck to the floor. Half balls on each side were colored balls. The rest were left unpainted. 

For three hours a day over 18 days, Galpayage Dona found bumblebees weren't so interested in the side where the balls didn't move, but they explored the side areas and interacted with the balls. Once they managed to roll a ball, they strongly preferred that side. They returned, climbing on the balls and rolling them around. She also found bumblebees preferred certain colors of balls. 

"There's something about the mobility that is more interesting for the bumblebees than just colored objects," Galpayage Dona says. In another experiment, she sometimes left the balls out overnight. "When I came in the next day, I would always find some bumblebees rolling the balls." As with mammals, the bumblebees who played the most were the younger ones. Their play tapered off as they got older. 

The scientists say it's not clear why the bumblebees roll the balls or whether they enjoy it. But the experiment raises important questions about how the insects' minds work and whether they have feelings. 

On Feb. 3，a train carrying dangerous chemicals flew off the rails and started a massive fire just outside East Palestine，a small town in Ohio of about 5，000 residents. No injuries or deaths were reported. 

The violent fire continued to spread through the weekend and locals said little information was communicated to them until the night of Feb.5，when forced evacuations（撤退） began due to concerns that the train wreck would explode. 

The remaining residents in the town crazily packed bags overnight and some were forced to abandon beloved pets. One woman left town a day early because her youngest son's "eyes turned red as tomato and he was coughing a lot，"after the train derailed（脱轨）. 

On Wednesday，two days after the controlled burning and five days after the derailment，officials lifted evacuation orders and told residents they could return to their homes. Authorities said air and water samples had been analyzed and came back normal. Investigators say the train derailed because of a broken axle（车轴）： 

As some residents began to come back into town，unfortunately，they reported strange smells and dead animals. People were also surprised and worried by the sounds of passing trains，already running through the village again so soon after the accident. A couple who live about five miles from where the train derailed spotted hundreds of dead fish. Other people reported dead chickens and shared social media photos of dead dogs and foxes in the area. 

An official declared chemicals had entered the waterways and-killed fish but the drinking water was safe. 

And yet，some East Palestine locals are choosing not to return home，and questioning whether it will ever be safe to do so. Some residents took to social media with doubts about the handling of the accident and whether they can trust what officials are telling them about the safety of the town. 

Lately，a dangerous materials expert said that residents shouldn't be allowed back into the evacuation zone，so soon following the controlled burning. He thought that 5 to 20 years down the line locals may see many people will suffer cancer. 

In this age of social media, everyone has followed the review trend. Nearly every business or website persuades customers to leave reviews as they can drive traffic to the site or business. The online business directory Yelp, which gets 178 million monthly visitors, invites anyone with a cellphone to leave a review of a business or restaurant. But by no means are negative reviews always honest. Some people threaten to give a bad review to extort（敲诈） discounted or free food from a restaurant. Some then follow through when their demands are not met.

But there are two sides to every story. One Denver chef decided to respond to bad reviews at his restaurant. As it turned out, some customers who left bad review s deserved bad reviews themselves. One customer's terrible review claimed that the food at the restaurant was so awful that he didn't eat a single bite. The chef looked through the monitor and found clear evidence that he had eaten every bite! In response, the chef called out the dissatisfied customer in his own negative review. Since the chef started responding to all his negative reviews, business at his restaurant has nearly doubled.

Telling people what you think of them as the result of a bad review can backfire on you, especially when a bad review is justified. Reviews are important because 94 percent of diners read online review s before they decide where to eat.

But bad review s appear for many reasons. The reviewer may be having a bad day, or the chef may be sick and the substitute（代替者） couldn't fill his shoes, so the cuisine suffered. Or perhaps the service wasn't as good as usual. The worst-case scene is that the reviewer wants to punish the restaurant on purpose for some slight, real or imagined. So one or two bad reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. Many negative reviews, however, indicate a problem.

So what is a restauranteur to do? First give an honest assessment of any negative reviews. Take a step back and ask if the writer has made any valid points. Are there areas for improvement? If the answer is yes, make adjustments. Reviewers themselves need to be honest and constructive. The goal should be to improve the situation, not just blow off steam.
