After a long day under the beating sun, an ice cream might be a tempting treat. But would you be able to enjoy it if you knew it was made from insect "milk" Gourmet Grubb, a food company, is hoping to use ice cream to introduce the public to the world of eating insects. Its ice cream uses EntoMilk, a dairy alterative made from insects known as the black solider fly, which is full of nutrients and friendly to farm and produce. "The ice cream flavors include chocolate, peanut butter and Christmas spices. We set out to change the way insects were seen, produced and used in the food industry, " said Leah Bessa, who cofounded Gourmet Grubb in 2017, "We were expecting a lot of push back. However, people said the first bite was not a taste of disgust but a pleasant surprise and they couldn't wait to have one more."

According to Bessa, EntoMilk has "a slightly taste of earth" and gives the ice cream "a rich, creamy taste". The insect "milk" ice cream is made with natural ingredients, such as raw honey, cocoa, spices and organic peanut butter. But it's not just about the taste — Bessa says the insect "milk" is also high in nutrients that are comparable to fish and meat like beef, chicken, and pork. EntoMilk is five times higher in protein than dairy.

"Insects need very little water, feed and space to grow, " Bessa explained, "They also produce little or no greenhouse gases compared to traditional livestock." Insects can be farmed indoors in small, controlled environments and they can be raised in urban areas, reducing the time of transporting the milk to the city. It also means they are less at risk of being impacted by outer climate patterns, which would affect cattle and crops. There is also potential for insect farming to reduce waste.

The United Nations predicts that the world will need to double food production to feed the global population by 2050 and has long promoted insect farming as a sustainable alternative protein source to traditional livestock. Although over 1, 900 insect species are estimated to be consumed by humans worldwide, insects are yet to reach the mainstream of Western cuisine.

Marathon is the supreme discipline of long-distance running. They are not only attractive for top athletes, but also for hobby runners. The choice of events is almost endless. Now we have put together some most breathtakingly beautiful ones that you'll be tempted to run holding a camera.

Ultra-trail Angkor, Cambodia

The newest of a series of Angkor marathons, this endurance (耐力) test offers 32-km, 64-km and 128-km routes around the famous temples, including Bayon and Angkor Wat. Watch out for monkeys, and the gigantic tree vines that memorably hug some of the great buildings.

Dodo Trail, Mauritius

Crossing rugged (崎岖的) coastline and tropical forests, the Dodo Trail is full of wildlife, although the famous dodo bird remains, sadly, extinct. While the demanding 50km Xtreme route covers 828m-high Black River Peak, a beginner-friendly Mini Dodo Trail (10 km) is easier.

Great Ocean Road marathon, Australia

Another well-known scenic coastal drive, southern Australia's Great Ocean Road stages a footrace every May. Neckache could be a problem: in one direction lies the scenic South Sea, and in another handsome forest and, if you're lucky, a koala or two. Be warned, however, that the series of steep slopes make this one of the toughest marathons.

Big Five marathon, South Africa

Marathon meets safari at the privately owned Entabeni Game Reserve every June. The start time is dependent on the race-day location of the Big Five members-African elephants, Cape buffalo, lions, leopards and rhinos-as organizers try to guarantee sightings.

(1) Which marathon is suitable for less experienced runners? A. Ultra-trail Angkor. B. Dodo Trail. C. Great Ocean Road marathon. D. Big Five marathon.
(2) Why does the writer mention "neckache" in Great Ocean Road marathon? A. To highlight the wonderful scenery. B. To present the difficulty of the event. C. To attract attention to physical health. D. To warn runners of dangerous animals.
(3) What do the four marathons have in common? A. Risky and tiring routes. B. Beautiful coastal views. C. Chances to see wild animals. D. Fixed time for annual events.

With almost all big employers in the United States now using artificial intelligence (Al) and automation in their hiring processes, the public is considering some urgent questions: How can you prevent discrimination in hiring when a machine is keeping the discrimination? What kind of methods might help?

Some 83% of employers, including 99% of Fortune 500 companies, now use some form of automated tools as part of their hiring process, said the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) chairwoman Charlotte Burrows at a hearing on Tuesday. She said everyone needs to speak up on the debate over these technologies. The risks are simply too high to leave this topic just to the experts.

Last year, the EEOC issued some guidance around the use of cutting-edge hiring tools, noting many of their shortcomings. The agency found that resume(简历)scanners that prioritize keywords and programs that evaluate a candidate's facial expressions and speech patterns in video interviews can create discrimination. Take, for example, a video interview that analyzes an applicant's speech patterns to determine their ability to solve problems. A person with a speech problem might score low and automatically be screened out. The problem will be for the EEOC to root out discrimination― stop it from taking place.

The EEOC is considering the most appropriate ways to handle the problem. It's agreed that inspections are necessary to ensure that the software used by companies avoids intentional or unintentional discrimination. But who would conduct those inspections is a more challenging question. Each option presents risks, Burrows pointed out. A third party may turn a blind eye to its clients, while a government-led inspection could potentially stop innovation.

In previous remarks, Burrows has noted the great potential that AI decision-making tools have to improve the lives of Americans, but only when used properly. "We must work to ensure that these new technologies do not become a high-tech pathway to discrimination," she said.

(1) What does Burrows suggest people do? A. Make their own voice heard. B. Follow the experts' suggestions. C. Stop using AI in hiring processes. D. Watch debates about technologies.
(2) How might programs in video interviews select employees? A. By scanning keywords. B. By evaluating resumes. C. By analyzing personalities. D. By interpreting speech patterns
(3) What is a possible consequence of third-party inspections? A. High expense. B. Unfair results. C. Age discrimination. D. Innovation interruption.
(4) What is Burrows's attitude to AI decision-making tools? A. Favourable. B. Disapproving. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.

We know that spending lots of time sitting down isn't good for us, but just how much exercise is needed to match the negative health effects of sitting down all day? Research suggests about 30-40 minutes per day of building up a sweat should do it.

Up to 40 minutes of"moderate(温和的) to vigorous(有力的) intensity physical activity"every day is about the right amount to balance out 10 hours of sitting still, the research says—although any amount of exercise or even just standing up helps to some extent.

That's based on a study published in 2020 analyzing nine previous studies, involving a total of 44,370 people in four different countries who were wearing some form of fitness tracker. The analysis found the risk of death among those with a more sedentary(久坐的)lifestyle went up as time spent engaging in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity went down. In other words, putting in some reasonably intensive activities—cycling, brisk walking, gardening--can lower your risk of an earlier death.

While analyses like this one always require some detailed dot-joining across separate studies with different volunteers, timescales and conditions, the benefit of this particular piece of research is that it relied on relatively objective data from wearables—not data self-reported by the participants.

The research based on fitness trackers is broadly in line with the 2020 WHO guidelines, which recommend 150-300 mins of moderate intensity or 75-150 mins of vigorous intensity physical activity every week to balance out sedentary behaviour.

Walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift, playing with children and pets, taking part in yoga or dancing, doing household chores, walking, and cycling are all put forward as ways in which people can be more active—and if you can't manage the 30—40 minutes right away, the researchers say, start off small.

(1) How does the author start the text? A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers. C. By giving examples. D. By raising questions.
(2) What did the research find? A. The longer you sit still, the earlier you will die. B. The more you exercise, the healthier you will be. C. Productivity can be improved through physical activities. D. Proper intensive activities help reduce the risk of earlier death.
(3) Why is the research reliable? A. It's based on previous studies. B. Its data is relatively objective. C. It's carried out in different countries. D. Its data is from the participants' reports.
(4) What is the main purpose of the text? A. To analyze the risk of sitting still. B. To recommend a healthy lifestyle. C. To inspire people to do more exercise. D. To show benefits of physical activities.
