There is no doubt that when you receive a compliment, you feel good and when you receive a criticism, you feel upset and want to refuse it.

You shouldn't be surprised by your reaction to the negative comment, as it's human's survival mechanism to avoid being criticized. Clearly, we don't want to be seen as failures, so we'd rather shut our eyes and cover our ears than have to take any criticisms from others.

Imagine you're learning to play the guitar, and you have just done your first public performance. Your teacher says, "You did well," which may not be as useful in helping you improve your performance skills as "Your timing needs some work." So I believe that criticisms are better than compliments.

No one would argue that healthy nutrition is a bad thing. However, too much food or drink — no matter how healthy they may be — can make us ill. Too many compliments take us away from our original enthusiasm of enjoying an activity. We start doing the activity only for the sake of receiving self-satisfying praise. Without the expectation of praise, our enthusiasm to complete things begins to be lost.

Launched in 2010, Microsoft KIN only lasted on the market for 48 days. It was very obvious that most 15 to 30-year-olds preferred Androids, BlackBerrys and iPhones to the Microsoft KIN. If criticism and feedback from the target group had been received while the phone was in development, Microsoft KIN could have avoided the huge embarrassment and its final failure.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about constructive criticism, which I like to think of as "healthy criticism". The right kind of criticism is honest feedback that will benefit you. Feedback forces you to reconsider your actions and the way you work. If you use constructive criticism wisely, it can guide you away from bad practices, giving you support and courage to move forward to be a better person in the future.

(1) What can we learn about compliment and criticism in Paragraph 1? A. People's response to them. B. People's ways to express them. C. People's understanding of them. D. People's different opinions on them.
(2) How would people be when receiving too many compliments? A. More annoyed. B. More satisfied. C. Less worried. D. Less interested.
(3) How can healthy criticism be helpful according to the last paragraph? A. To encourage growth. B. To develop intelligence. C. To avoid embarrassment. D. To reduce enthusiasm.
(4) What is a suitable title for the passage? A. Criticisms are better than compliments. B. Constructive criticism contributes to better future. C. Honest feedback comes from healthy criticism. D. Enough enthusiasm is vital for further development.

Honors Program

The honors program is for students who have enjoyed their experience in research with a guide teacher and are looking for a highlight experience during their final year. The program has specific requirements for our majors described below.

Application

Students participate in the honors program during their final year. Students who expect to have a 3. 5 accumulative GPA by the fall of senior year should have identified a guide teacher and applied for NBB honors by May 1st of their third year. Applications are brief and include basic information such as guide teacher name, project title, and current GPA.

Coursework

During senior year, honors students take two research-experience courses. Participation in these courses includes at least 12 hours of work on the research project each week as well as weekly meetings with other researchers to develop professional skills.

Essay

The majority of our major work with guide teachers in research experiences, and many students co-author manuscripts (手稿) published in leading journals. However, only honors students are guided and helped through the process of writing an essay. All students' essays are published online through the university library and, after the data being forbidden to be included in other articles, the essays are available to search.

(1) Which of the following is the requirement of the honors program? A. Students should take two relevant courses. B. Students should spend 12 hours researching. C. Students should finish their essays on their own. D. Students should apply by May 1st in the fourth year.
(2) What privilege do honors students have? A. Access to leading journals. B. Guidance in writing an essay. C. Including the data in other articles. D. Publishing essays through the library.
(3) Who is the passage intended for? A. Guide teachers. B. College Students. C. Researchers. D. Professors.

The last decade saw the rise of the field of "plant neurobiology (植物神经生物学)". That debatable field is based on the idea that plants — which do not possess brains — handle information in ways similar to complicated animal nervous systems. This thinking implies that plants could feel happiness or sorrow or pain, make intentional decisions and even possess consciousness. But the chances of that are "effectively zero". "There's nothing in the plant comparable to the complexity of the animal brain," says Taiz, from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Some plants are capable of complicated behaviors. For example, wounded leaves can send warning signals to other parts of the plant. But plants perform these with equipment that's very different from the nervous systems of animals, no brain required, Taiz argues. He and his colleagues point out methodological faults in some of the studies that claim plants have brain-like command centers and animal-like nerve cells. But beyond the debate over how these studies are conducted, Taiz's team argues that plant consciousness doesn't even make sense from an evolutionary point of view.

"Complicated animal brains advanced in part to help a living being catch a meal and avoid becoming one," Taiz says. "But plants are rooted to the ground and rely on sunlight for energy, an inactive lifestyle that doesn't require quick thinking or outsmarting a predator (捕食者) or the energetically expensive nervous systems that enable those behaviors." "What use would consciousness be to a plant?" Taiz asks. "If a plant worried and suffered when faced with a threat, it would be wasting so much energy that it wouldn't have any left to do anything about that threat," Taiz says. "Furthermore, plants have plenty to do without having to be conscious, too. With sunlight, carbon dioxide and water, plants create the compounds that sustain much of the rest of life on Earth," Taiz points out. "Isn't that enough?"

(1) What does the rise of "plant neurobiology" indicate? A. It is widely recognized that plants have brains and nervous systems. B. Scientists proved that plants can handle information like animals. C. The science community believes in the promising future of studying it. D. Certain scientists believe that plants may possess consciousness.
(2) What is probably Linchol Taiz's opinion concerning plants? A. Plants possess animal-like nervous systems. B. It is not understandable that plants have consciousness. C. Plants perform complicated behaviors with brains. D. It is necessary for plants to develop brains for survival.
(3) What is the function of Taiz's words in Paragraph 3? A. To support an argument. B. To clarify a concept. C. To explain a rule. D. To present a fact.
(4)  In which section of a magazine may this text appear? A. Entertainment. B. Life. C. Education. D. Science.

Human beings are the greatest threat to the survival of endangered species through hunting, habitat destruction and the effects of climate change.

Read on to learn which beautiful creatures are most in need of our help, protection and conservation.

Amur Leopard

Since 1996, the amur leopard has been classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered with less than 70 individuals thought to exist today. It is hunted and killed for its beautiful fur. Its habitat is being destroyed for human settlement and agricultural practices.

Gorillas

Cross River Gorillas and Mountain Gorillas are both classified as Critically Endangered and Endangered by the TUCN since 1996—that is two out of five gorilla subspecies. There are currently only 200—300 Cross River Gorillas left in the wild, and 900 Mountain Gorillas.

Sea turtles

Two types of sea turtles are amongst the most endangered species in the world: the Hawksbill Turtle and the Leatherback Turtle. In the past 100 years, the Hawksbill Turtle has lost 90 percent of its population, 80 percent of which has been lost in the past 10 years. As of 1996, the IUCN classified it as a Critically Endangered species. The Leatherback turtle is listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, yet many subpopulations are facing extinction.

Orangutan

Since the millennium, the Sumatran Orangutan has been classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered with approximately 80% of the population lost in the past 75 years mainly as a result of mass deforestation. This awful trend continues to put pressure on the remaining population of 6,600 Sumatran Orangutans that are estimated to remain on this Earth.

(1) Why do human beings hunt and kill the amur leopard? A. For its meat. B. For its fur. C. For its bones. D. For its teeth.
(2) What can we learn about sea turtles from the passage? A. They lose their lives due to lack of food. B. There are only 300 sea turtles left in the wild. C. They are the most endangered wildlife in the world. D. The number of sea turtles has dropped sharply recently.
(3) What's the main purpose of this text? A. To call on us to help and protect endangered animals. B. To encourage us to give much food to endangered animals. C. To advise us to stop eating endangered animals' meat. D. To show us the current life of endangered animals.
