Starting at the Boston Common, but easily picked up at any point along the way, the Freedom Trail offers historical insight into the city and its surroundings. With 16 official stops along the way, you can check out one, some or all of the sites on this route where a red trail painted on the sidewalks takes you throughout Boston.

Fenway Park

Boston fans are crazy about baseball. Ask many and they will claim it as their religion, and offer Fenway as their place of worship. Even if baseball is not your thing, be sure to catch a game at Fenway Park, home of the legendary Green Monster. Tickets can be hard to come by, so seek them out well in advance.

New England Aquarium

The adventure begins before you step foot through the door. Watch the Harbor Seals swirl around in the outdoor tank while you wait for your tickets. Catch a show in the glass enclosed classroom overlooking Boston Harbor, and plunge your hands into the touch tank where rays and sharks are circling and awaiting your touch.

Boston Symphony Orchestra

The Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the most respected orchestras in the world. Playing host to a variety of concerts throughout the year, including the Holiday Pops, The Boston Symphony Orchestra wows crowds. History has been made within these walls where songs like the popular "Sleigh Ride" have been composed.

Despite extreme cold, cruel ice and being brushed off as mad, Slovenian Davo kamicar became the first person to ski non-stop down Mount Everest. After a dramatic fall over almost sheer cliffs of snow, stones and ice, 38-year-old Kamicar returned to his base camp after five hours of skiing. "I feel only absolute happiness and absolute tiredness," he said. 

Due to the severe weather conditions, Kamicar flung himself back down the mountain as soon as he reached the top rather than have a rest as planned At one point, he had to speed overstretches of ice that collapsed and broke underneath him and could have sent him falling into the deep crevasses(裂缝) that dot the mountain.

The descent (下落) had been widely regarded as extremely dangerous. The Darwin Awards website, known for documenting foolhardy deaths, urged people to log on to their website and "keep your eyes peeled for a live Darwin Award". However, the only body to make the news was the corpse (尸体)of an unknown mountaineer which Kamicar zipped past as he descended one of an estimated 120 corpses, thought to litter the slopes." This mountain is always full of surprises. Seeing a dead man out there was still a shocking experience," he said. 

Thanks to strategically placed cameras on the mountain and one attached to his safety helmet hundreds of thousands of people witnessed the process online, which was one of the record highs ever of more than 650,000 hits. The website was once jammed as people tried to access the site.

A previous failed attempt had already cost Kamicar two fingers when he got frostbite as a fierce storm hit the peak. Coming from a skiing family and had his first Himalayan skiing expedition in 1989, he has been ever since tireless in raising funds and sponsorship for more expeditions, with Everest as the permanent goal.

Beach Library(Albena, Bulgaria)

Reading a book on the beach is a classic, and in Bulgaria, one library encourages tourists to do just that. The white, weather-resistant shelves lined up not far from the surf feature 6,000 books in 15 languages, so every visitor can find the perfect beach read to enjoy while soaking up the sun's rays.

Bishan Library(Singapore)

Built in 2006, this library with skylights and trellises(格架), standing out for its modern art, is meant to resemble a modern glass tree-house. Glass pods of varying colors stick out of the building randomly to create cozy yet air y corner for reading throughout the building. Children's room on the basement level invites interaction while preventing noise from disturbing those concentrating in the loft y seats above.

The Camel Library Service (North Eastern Province, Kenya)

To fight low literacy rates in the desert of Kenya, the government created a travelling library composed of nine camels bringing books to villages. The library travels four days a week serving the region's nomadic(游牧的)people. Currently the service focuses on children, but with more funding they plan to increase their reach both in distance and the titles they carry.

Macquarie University Library(Sydney, Australia)

A stunning combination of being both cutting-edge and sustainable, this building with a green roof, was made from recycled materials and designed to look like an eucalyptus tree(桉树). It is also state of the art, using robot cranes to bring requested books to the front desk.
