After winning the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, China has been striving to hold a high-tech Winter Games. Now, as the games are approaching, the viewers can learn how innovative technologies are being used, especially in the construction of venues.

For example, how the National Aquatics Center, also known as the "Water Cube", was turned into the "Ice Cube". The main change is to turn the four-lane swimming pool into a curling rink (冰场). According to Xinhua, the "transformation" will be completed by using a quick-disassembly (快速拆除的) system. Simply put, the water will be drained(抽干) from the pool and then a convertible (可移动的) frame will be built and put inside. The frame is made up of 2,600 H-shape steel columns and has a height of three meters and a length of two meters, China News Service reported.

Another major technology applied can be seen at the National Speed Skating Oval(NSSO), known as the "Ice Ribbon".Traditionally, freon, which harms the ozone layer, was used in the ice-making process. But NSSO adopts an environmentally friendly technology, which uses carbon dioxide to make ice.

For another new venue, the National Sliding Center, the design team was confronted with a tricky problem. The center features a 1.9m sliding track. The center is located on the southern slope of Xiaohaituo Mountain in Yanqing. The sunlight in the southern slope is stronger than that in the northern slope. What's more the Yanqing competition zone has complex terrain (地形) and strong wind," Li Bo, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, told CGTN." Wind resistance is the key to the construction of buildings," Li added.

So they studied the wind filed date in the zone, analyzed the sun's height in different seasons, and used computer models to simulate (模拟) and determine the awning (遮阳篷) coverage on the track. Finally, the team developed a system combining the terrain and awning to reduce the impact of solar radiation.

It helps athletes quickly familiarize themselves with the complex terrain. D. It can reduce the impact of strong wind and solar radiation.
(4) What is the text mainly about? A. A comparison of some Beijing Winter Olympic venues. B. Technologies used to build the Beijing Winter Olympic venues. C. China's mission of holding the Beijing Winter Olympics. D. The difficulties of venue transformation for the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The beauty industry produces many units of one-time use containers every year. More and more consumers are asking how they can keep themselves clean and beautiful without trashing the planet.

It's a question Women of the Future winner, Natassia Nicolao, considered during her years working in product development for beauty and wellness companies. Raised by a strong and supportive mother, Natassia used her skills and passion to make a difference. In 2021, she created her waterless beauty brand.

She said, "Water is involved in every stage of a product life cycle. Everything we use, buy, sell and make has a huge water footprint. On top of that, the beauty industry adds water as the main ingredients in its products, despite it having no direct benefit to our skin. "

Having lived through water restrictions in drought-ridden Australia, Natassia felt it necessary to stop the overuse of water in the beauty industry. Natassia has always loved beauty. Her company tries to be sustainable in every step of the way, but at its core, it is about removing water from our beauty routines.

"It's really rooted in water conservation first, and then managing your water footprint, your carbon footprint and your waste footprint, " Natassia said. "We create waterless beauty products to help conserve water. " The glass bottles and jars of her products can be recycled. The oils and wipes are formulated without any water, requiring no water to use. The company also has a piece of game-changing beauty technology: face-wipes and masks that completely dissolve in water.

"The company is still in its beginning, " Natassia said. With the prize money from Women of the Future, she plans to purchase a machine to simplify the creation of the wipes and masks. The publicity, meanwhile, will help her spread the message central to the company's existence that beauty must do better. Natassia believes that, with a little courage and innovation, it can do.

Chinese astronauts conducted a science lecture to millions of students on Dec. 9,2021 from the Tiangong space station. The three astronauts, Hai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, showed life in space and conducted experiments in microgravity.

It was the first lecture of the Tiangong Class, China's first extraterrestrial(地球外的)lecture series. Its goal is to popularize space science.

"The laboratory of the space station has many conditions that the Earth laboratory does not have, such as the environment of weightlessness and radiation," said Wen Xin, a professor at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He said that important jobs for astronauts in the space station include cell observation and maintaining plant life.

In the lecture, Ye demonstrated experiments related to cell growth in a weightless environment. He compared the growth and shape of cells in artificial gravity and zero-gravity to study their changing principles in space.

Another experiment in the space lecture was shown by Wang Yaping. She illustrated how a paper flower "bloomed" on the surface of water in Tiangong space station. She explained that the surface tension of water is magnified(放大)in space due to zero gravity.

One of the examples of surface tension on Earth is that some insects can "walk" on water. They use surface tension to "stand" instead of falling through water.

Surface tension plays a key role in product development. Researchers around the world are measuring surface tension to improve the quality of their products, according to Biolin Scientific, a science company. Paints are tailored to stick better on the surfaces they are applied to. Surface tension also has impacts in drug development.

Although the astronauts are thousands of miles away, their research does influence our life. Shi Yi, a teacher at the Beijing No. 101 Middle School, told China Daily that the space lecture was "an eye-opening experience that would arouse students' interest in science".

(1) What makes the space laboratory special? A. It is operated by a professor. B. It has a unique experiment environment. C. It broadcasts experiments to students. D. It promotes cell growth.
(2) What can we learn through Ye's cell experiment in space? A. The rules of cell growth. B. The secret in a weightless environment. C. The conditions of cell growth. D. The differences between the universe and the earth.
(3) What can we say about surface tension? A. It can speed up flower blooming. B. It is related to product quality. C. Paints have an influence on it. D. Drugs are used to measure it.
(4) Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. Special Laboratory Environments B. Examples of Surface Tension C. Learning from Space D. Lectures about Cells
