Walking in the countryside is believed to be the best tonic to lift our spirits. Being exposed to nature has been linked to both emotional and physical well-being improvement. For some, the first choice is to stroll through a forest. However, when we are admiring the lush green trees surrounding us, it's noteworthy that they are doing more than just being pleasing things to look at.

We're already aware that trees are a natural healer. They produce oxygen, remove dust and clean the air we breathe by taking in harmful human-caused carbon dioxide emissions. Deforestation does no good to this, which is why so many people want to save them. But there's more to trees than we thought. A study has discovered that trees are actually an intelligent plant.

It's considered that trees do communicate and share resources among themselves. But how do they actually "talk" to each other? Below the surface of the earth are tree roots, and they are connected via an underground web of fungi(菌丝) that resembles the nervous networks in the brain. And research has shown that they are all interconnected. This network allows trees to share information which is important to the whole forest. They transfer carbon, nutrients and water to one another, and even warn each other of approaching threats.

Suzanne Simard, a researcher from the University of British Columbia, has named this network the Wood Wide Web. She discovered that mother trees help smaller trees to survive via this network. She said to the BBC," We discovered that the mother trees would prefer those seedlings of their own kin (同族) to those of the strangers" by passing them more nutrients. She also said that to survive in a changing environment, trees are clever enough to make changes and adapt themselves to the surroundings.

So it appears that trees really are the social stars in nature, and with approximately three trillion trees on our planet, it's high time to show them our respect if we expect them to thrive.

Most of us have an unclear memory of learning about the Pythagorean Theorem (勾股定理) many years ago in math class. 

If you're anything like us writer-types, that 2, 000-year-old theorem went in one ear, and immediately out the other! But for two students at St. Mary's Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana, the theorem presented a challenge they simply couldn't resist taking on. As a reminder for those of us who aren't potential mathematicians, the Pythagorean Theorem is the basis of trigonometry (三角学). For over 2, 000 years, math scholars have stated it's impossible to use trigonometry to prove the Pythagorean Theorem because doing so would be circular logic. In other words, an idea cannot prove itself.

Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson have challenged that concept in their new abstract. The two high school seniors recently presented their abstract in front of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) at their annual southeastern conference. Unsurprisingly, they were the only teenagers there in a sea of math scholars! Their abstract states, "We present a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem which is based on a fundamental result in trigonometry. " In plain English, that means Calcea and Ne'Kiya proved the theorem using trigonometry after all, and without using circular reasoning.

How did a pair of teenagers solve a riddle that has stumped so many mathematicians before them? Countless math scholars can do nothing facing this theorem. According to Calcea and Ne'Kiya, they have their teachers to thank!

The St. Mary's school slogan is "No Excellence Without Hard Labor", and they mean it! Both girls say their teachers push them to think outside the box and encourage them to discover new concepts. "We have really great teachers, " Ne'Kiya said with a smile. Calcea is proud of herself and her friend for doing something no other high school students have ever done.

A few years ago, I asked a neighborhood handyman to build a tree-house in my backyard. In part, this was to solve a problem: my children were good friends with the children who lived beside us and they liked to climb over the fence that separated the two yards. We could have just put a gate into the fence, but I decided that building some kind of climbable structure around the large fir tree in the yard, which also included a staircase into the neighbor's yard, was a more creative solution to the problem, and I liked the idea that the tree-house would also serve to join the two play spaces together.

The handyman took the task much more seriously than I had expected. He made drawings, built small wooden models, and even held a kind of "visioning" exercise with the children and their parents to make sure that he hadn't missed any important details. At the end of our lengthy discussions, he asked, "Where would you like me to put the beer rail?"

The question took me aback as I hadn't really considered the possibility that a nice play structure in my yard might also facilitate beer consumption among the neighborhood children, but I quickly tuned in to the fact that our designer had intuited what should have been obvious to me- the children wouldn't be the only ones to take advantage of this platform up among the branches of the beautiful old tree. And, indeed, over the years that I lived in that house I discovered that the platform made a pretty good perch (栖息处), not only for the occasional cold beer, but also for sitting and dreaming, reading a book, enjoying a picnic or even getting some writing done. My children enjoyed climbing around in the tree-house, playing tag, setting up imaginary pirate ships and fortresses (城堡), and they also used it for some quiet thinking and even the occasional math homework. The tree seemed to be a particularly good algebra tutor.
