The Mount Changbaishan Geopark, along with five other Chinese geoparks,  (recognize) as a Global Geopark by UNESCO on March 57. The number of Global Geoparks in China has increased to 47, making the country with the most such geoparks in the world. 

"China is rich in geological heritage, with a broad distribution and a complete range of geological types," Ren Fang,  expert with the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, told People's Daily. "It is one of the first countries worldwide to propose and establish national geoparks." 

China set up national-level geoparks and began applying for Global Geopark status in 2003 in response to UNESCO's initiative  (establish) the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) . In 2004, Beijing witnessed the First International Conference on Geoparks,  17 European geoparks and eight Chinese geoparks joined the GGN. The network aims to promote best  (practice) and high standards for the conservation of geological heritage and the promotion of  (sustain) regional economic development. 

The Mount Changbaishan Geopark, newly  (add) to the GGN network, is situated in Jilin Province and is home  the "millennium eruption," a massive volcanic event that occurred roughly1, 000 years ago. Renowned for its Quaternary volcanic landforms, the park, spanning 2, 723 square km,  (feature) giant compound volcanic cones, ancient eruptions and their deposits, and the splendid Tianchi lake. With over 380 craters, it boasts the highest number, greatest density, and widest distribution of volcanic rock types in East Asia. 

The Grand Canal is the oldest and longest man-made waterway in the world with a history of more than 2,500 years, construction started in the Spring and Autumn Period. The 1794 kilometers' waterway is 22 times length of the Panama Canal. It is a golden waterway second only to the Yangtze River in China. The Grand Canal runs from Zhejiang to Beijing  (pass) through six provinces and two municipalities and connects five main river systems.

The canal( function) as the backbone of the ancient empire's inland communication and trading systems. Grain, salt,(log) and silk were transported along the canal to all directions. Scores of towns along the banks developed, contributing (large) to ancient China's economy. The canal enormously promoted economic interaction and cultural exchange between the north south, which ensured the country's (stable).

In 2014, it was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. In 2019 China issued a plan   (construct) national cultural parks for the Grand Canal. During the last 2 years, building the Grand Canal national cultural parks (recognize) as a key task in the 14th Five-Year Plan. In future, cities along the Grand Canal will form a new cultural belt, green belt and tourism belt.

 Summer is over, but there's no reason to be upset as that means autumn is upon us, arguably the (good) season of the year. 

 Beijing's autumn is extremely short, so parks around the city fill up fast with people coming to see the season's sight一a show of changing(color) as the trees turn from dark green to deep red. There are plenty of places in the city center(catch) the golden Gingko leaves, but I'm heading just outside of the Fifth Ring Road to see the season on larger scale. 

 Despite parks like Xiangshan getting so busy you need tickets a week in advance, there are still areas well-known and  (frequent) visited by the Beijing crowds, and Baiwangshan, one of such places,(locate) 3km from the Summer Palace to the city's North West. It offers hiking tails and beautiful views of the city and(surround) forests. 

I love coming to Beijing's parks at this time of year because I can always enjoy (I), bathing in the last of the good weather and golden colors. You never know you're going to find around every corner.
