It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.

What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!

I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. "I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him," he explained uncomfortably. "I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."

I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.

She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this time?  I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, "Your mom only has one eye? " and laughed at me.

I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, "Why don't you have the other eye?  You're only gonna make me a joke! " My mom trembled with shock, and said in an apologetic tone, "I'm so sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. But I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that eye. I will leave right now. Sorry! " My mom turned around and slipped away.

For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something biting at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. Maybe because my mom hadn't punished me, I didn't think I had hurt her feelings very badly.

I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University. I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. I never went back to visit my mom.

Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it's a place that doesn't remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door.

A few years ago, I had taken a part-time job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I'd begun to see the people rushing by outside. Then an elderly woman caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of steps, she moved with deliberation (从容). The elderly woman had come into the store along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was clearly impatient, checking her watch every few seconds.

The older woman then separated from the younger one and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf, obviously expecting someone else to help. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled at me and showed me a title scrawled (乱涂乱画) on a piece of paper. It was a bit unclear to make out. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies, about quality. Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it.

Looking back, I think I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who'd passed away the previous Christmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced her to the different sections: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.

We found the movie, and I complimented her on her choice. She smiled and told me it was one she'd enjoyed when she was her daughter's age and that she hoped she would enjoy it as much as she had. Maybe, she said with a hint of wistfulness (一丝渴望), her daughter could enjoy it with her own young children. Then, when the older woman's turn in line came, she paid in cash, counting out the dollars and coins with the same sureness she'd displayed earlier.

Paragraph 1:

As the cashier put the DVD into a plastic bag, I walked over to the younger woman.

Paragraph 2:

The elderly woman moved with her deliberate slowness back to her daughter.

My single mother used to take on several jobs just in order to make ends meet. When I was fifteen years old, she started her own business, and things began to get easier financially. There was no longer a question as to whether she would be able to afford groceries for the week.

The following spring, when I was sixteen years old, a new family moved into our neighborhood. The wife, Melissa, quickly made friends with my mother, and the children, though younger than me, became my pals soon. They lived within walking distance of my house, and in summer vacation, I would walk over to their house to watch Disney movies while my mother was at work.

One afternoon, I was at their house during lunchtime, and they were generous enough to include me in the meal. Their daughter, ten at the time, requested a glass of milk with her food. Melissa stated, "We are out of milk, and we don't have any more money for groceries this week." She suddenly realized that I was present and explained with a defeated look, "Money has been really tight."

The family had recently moved here from California because Melissa had been offered a good job. However, the position had not worked out, and her husband had to take the first job he could find. They had uprooted their children and moved across the country, leaving behind their relatives and friends, only to end up in trouble. I thought about our own circumstances just a year earlier.

Later, I came home with a heavy heart as I reflected on their hardship. I told my mother about the rough time Melissa was experiencing. "Do you think we could help them?" I asked. In response, she immediately opened the cupboard doors and started pulling out food. We searched each cabinet, grabbing bag after bag, can after can. Then we ended in front of the shelf where my mother's precious homemade goods were stored. We found a sizable box and packed it with a lot of groceries.
