I was a broke university student. I should have been going to university on a scholarship because I came from a low-income family, but a last-minute £100-a-year pay rise for my mum pushed my family over the threshold (门槛) for what defined "low-income" and I was suddenly no longer qualified for £15,000 a year in scholarship money. This news came after I'd been accepted by the university and signed the lease (租约) for my accommodation.

Despite my family not being labelled low-income anymore, I still wouldn't receive any financial support from my family as all the income went toward taking care of my disabled brother and paying their own bills. It would be tight, but because I had savings from my part-time job, I decided to go to university anyway. After paying my rent, I had £

10.20 a week for everything else including food, toiletries, and school supplies.

As I was in a new city, I really wanted to make friends, which was difficult when most of the social activities were expensive. Therefore, I jumped at the chance to do a relatively cheap coffee shop trip with my roommates who were pleasant to me.

I had £20 with me to get a cheap cup of coffee and my food shopping for a few weeks. So I headed for the coffee shop. While paying, I pulled out the note and a handful of change and realized I could pay without breaking the note, so I put it back in my pocket. It wasn't until I arrived at the supermarket that I realized the note was gone. What should I do? I was desperate it was the equivalent (相等物) of two weeks of money. My roommates helped me look for the note. However, it was in vain. Finally, I went to school empty-handed.

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty while my friends were on night duty. On one shift, I remember I sensed something just before going off duty at 11 a.m. I had brought the ward sister (护士长) her morning tea, so I put down the tea tray. The tray rattled and fell through the window. At first I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shook and patients screamed.

I realized that we were in the grips of a tremendous earthquake. I caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly frightened by it. I pushed her under the bed and held the bed in place while I got under it myself. I then pulled a blanket down between us. As soon as it settled, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside. I carried her out and helped her down to the lawn, where several other people had now gathered.

I knew the ward sister was with another patient, so I went back inside the building. When I reached the ward sister, I found her patient could not walk. We made a seat for her by linking our hands and arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check no one was left behind. Almost all of the patients had been able to get themselves out of our ward (病房), as far as I knew.

Once our ward was cleared, a doctor called for volunteers to go down to the isolation ward (隔离病房) with him to help more people. Another nurse and I went down there. The first thing we saw was a bath in the hallway. We came to the ruined ward. The doctor went in ahead of us through the remains of what had been a doorway. He found one of the nurses partially covered with rubble(碎石). She was still alive so we began to clear the rubble away. Suddenly, the aftershock struck. The doctor ordered us to leave. This brave man intended to stay with the trapped nurse and risk his own life.

Not until recently have I known that a little pet can be such a helpful assistant to a helpless mom. This is all due to what our new family member, a little kitten named Thula, has done. She seems to understand exactly what Iris needs at any given time.

Within a year of my daughter's birth in 2015, I already suspected that something was wrong. Even by babies' standards, Iris was a frighteningly bad sleeper. She also appeared unmistakably distant. Besides, after saying "dada" at eight months, she stopped talking. Finally, aged two, she was diagnosed as autistic.

In fact, after a long process of trial and error, I found activities that obviously did help her, including music and riding on the back of her dad's bike. Above all, Iris showed a remarkable talent for art: producing large multi-layered Impressionist-style paintings that took her several days and that once led to the Leicester Mercury headline, "Top artist aged 3."

Iris did make progress, but by no means steadily, with promising developments often followed by periods of regression (退步).

One night, Iris refused to sleep. As her frustrations mounted, she started to cry, and her sobs filled the quiet room. I felt so hopeless as I held her close. Nothing seemed to comfort her apart from her favorite book and I longed for some help, but she pushed away all who tried except me, making me on the edge of breaking down.

Downstairs, my husband looked at Thula in surprise who had suddenly got up off his lap. Her eyes focused towards the door and she had one foot raised, perfectly poised(悬在) in the air. Something had grabbed her attention – the crying of Iris. Then her legs were moving fast. Zooming round the corner, she flew up the stairs into Iris's bedroom and jumped onto the bed. She curled up next to Iris, ignored the cryin g and started grooming(梳毛) herself, licking her paws and rubbing them over her ears.

When a tornado touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. Afterward all the local newspapers carried many human-interest stories featuring some of the families who suffered the hardest

One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely shattered(破碎的,mobile home, a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downward. Clutching at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear.

The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I stuck the picture of the young family on our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.

"These poor people now have nothing," I said. "We'll share what we have with them. I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods.

While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up old toys and games.

Meghan walked up with Lucy her worn, much-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. She came to the box that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy's flat,  painted-on-face, gave her a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.

"Oh, Honey," I said." You don't have to give Lucy. You love    her so much."

Meghan nodded seriously, eyes filled with held-back tears, "Lucy makes me happy,   Mommy. Maybe she'll make that other little girl happy, too."
