People may form inaccurate impressions about us from our social media posts, finds new Cornell University research that is the first to examine perceptions (认知) of our personalities based on online posts.

An analysis of online status updates found great difference between how viewers saw the authors across a range of personality traits, and the authors' self-perceptions.

Viewers rated the Internet users on average as having lower self-esteem and being more self-revealing, for example, than the users rated themselves, Status updates containing photos, videos or links in addition to text facilitated more accurate assessments than those with just text the researchers found.

Overall, they said, the study sheds light on the dynamic process by which a cyber audience tries to make sense of who we are from isolated fragments(碎片) of shared information, jointly constructing our digital identity.

"The impression people form about us on social media based on what we post can differ from the way we view ourselves." said Qi Wang, professor of psychology and director of the Culture &. Cognition Lab. "A mismatch between who we are and how people perceive us could influence our ability to feel connected online and the benefits of engaging in social media interaction."

The Cornell researchers believe their study is the first to investigate audience perceptions of social media users through their posts, On platforms, users often share fragmentary personal narratives while interacting with "friends" they may know only a little or sometimes not at all.

Interestingly, the study found that online status updates generated perceptions of users that were consistent with cultural standards in offline contexts concerning gender and ethnicity—even though viewers were blind to their identities.

Wang said the findings could help developers design interfaces that allow people to express themselves most authentically.

"If people's view of us is very different from who we actually are, or how we would like to be perceived." Wang said, "it could harm our social life and well-being."

(1) What may your online posts lead to? A. Authentic digital identity. B. Viewer's misjudgment of you. C. Less social media interaction. D. Making more online friends.
(2) Which of the following will least reveal your personality? A. A link with text B. A pure video post. C. A plain text post. D. A text post with photos.
(3) Who will be most interested in these findings? A. Online web viewers. B. Internet bloggers. C. Computer repairmen. D. Social media developers.
(4) What does Wang think of the result of the research? A. Profitable. B. Meaningless. C. Useful. D. Unpractical.

Something strange has been happening to me lately: Women in the street have been telling me I'm brave.

My act of courage isn't much—I just stopped coloring my hair. I had brown hair that started going gray when I was 30. So, like a lot of women, I started dyeing it. It was expensive and time-consuming. And my hair grew fast, so I needed to go back to the hair salon every 5 weeks.

Many people seem to enjoy holding onto their youth for as long as possible, giving the impression that they don't have much wisdom or many accomplishments. But our hair starts to turn gray and suddenly we start spending $ 500 or more a year to cover something our male colleagues don't need to cover.

Of course, people should do what they want with their own body—my mother is 91 and still has "blond" hair, and why not? I just wish more of us would feel that it was OK to be ourselves, because going gray has done more for me than saving me time and money.

I like my natural hair, just as it is. I like how it has got curly and full again. It is recovering after years of being damaged by chemicals. I also like that it has given me some needed attitude in a society that makes youth seem so important, while being against maturity. It reminds me that I'm not a kid anymore—and this isn't a bad thing. Not being a kid anymore means I read the books I want, and not the books I feel I should read. It means not wasting my time at events I don't need to attend when I'd rather be with my family and friends.

When I see my hair in the mirror, it's a reminder that my time is limited, and I should spend it doing what matters. There's nothing shameful about growing older. And pretending it's not happening is a way of giving up our right.

I see my gray hair as a small act of rebellion against the idea that people lose value as they age, instead of gaining it. I see gray hair as my "flag" and I'm letting it fly proudly.

(1) How does the author feel about coloring hair? A. It is not worth the time and money spent on it. B. It is a good way to hold onto youth. C. It shows wisdom and accomplishments. D. It shows people's great courage.
(2) What should we do when we grow old according to the author? A. Give up our power. B. Pretend to be still young. C. Accept it and act positively. D. Read as many books as possible.
(3) What is the author's main purpose in writing this passage? A. To explain why youth is valued. B. To share her opinion on growing old. C. To stress the importance of different attitudes. D. To analyze the advantages and disadvantages of aging.
(4) Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Holding Onto Youth B. Dyeing Your Hair C. Gaining Value With Age D. Valuing Wisdom Of Age

A 14-year-old teenager was named "America's Top Young Scientist" after winning this year's 3M Young Scientist Challenge, a national science competition. He was given the title for creating a bar of soap(肥皂) that fights low-grade skin cancer and also awarded $25,000 for his research.

Heman Bekele, who is a freshman at WT Woodson High School, moved to Virginia from Ethiopia, where he observed people constantly exposed to the sun and suffering from skin cancer. While he didn't initially give it much thought, as the competition drew near,he remembered his experiences in Ethiopia and decided to focus his research on skin cancer.

Heman started doing experiments at home and doing testing on digital models. He learned much about dendritic cells (named for their tree-like branches), which boost human immune(免疫的) responses. In his submission video to 3M, Heman explains, "When skin cancer cells develop, they weaken dendritic cells in the body, allowing the cancer to takeover." He said the soap contains agents that could potentially reactivate dendritic cells that help eliminate the cancer cells.

The soap can be applied to the skin every couple of days and then the person with skin cancer will start to see progress. "The average price of skin cancer treatment in the US alone is almost $40,000, but my bar of soap only costs $8.50 to create, and it can have the same effects as something that people would pay thousands and thousands of dollars to try to get," Heman said.

For now, Heman said he has a five-year plan. At the end of it, he hopes to have created a nonprofit organization where he can provide accessible skin cancer treatment to as many people as possible. But to achieve his goal, he would have to get his treatment through clinical trials and have it certified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), he said.

(1) What does the author intend to tell us about Heman in paragraph 2? A. The memory of his childhood. B. The inspiration for his invention. C. The spread of skin cancer in Africa. D. The reason for his moving to Virginia.
(2) What does the underlined word "eliminate" in paragraph 3 mean? A. Avoid. B. Remove. C. A wake. D. Balance.
(3) What advantage does Heman's soap have over common treatments for skin cancer? A. It is more affordable. B. It takes effect at once. C. It has fewer side effects. D. It is suitable for all skin cancers.
(4) What does Heman think his top priority is? A. Starting a nonprofit enterprise. B. Distributing his soap to patients. C. Obtaining a drug production license. D. Applying to perform human trials.
