Keeping plants at home is a healthy and comfortable way of life. The following houseplants can create a most beautiful piece of green for your home.

Bird's Nest Fern (蕨)

The bird's nest fern is a good choice for anyone with a house that wouldn't support sun-loving species. It's a hardy fern variety adapting to living on forest floors, where the air tends to be cool and damp. It likes to be misted as well, but this doesn't always mean you need a misting bottle—spraying (喷洒) it in the sink or hanging it near a shower often works as well.

Chinese Money Plant

This is a flowering species that might be most appropriate for experienced plant gardeners looking for a new challenge. It prefers a moderate amount of indirect light, and tends to dry out slightly between watering sessions. It produces new plants easily without any input, directly from its root system. These can coexist in the same pot for a time.

Resurrection Plant

This native of the Mexican desert has adapted to surviving in extreme drought by curling (蜷缩) into a ball and remaining in seemingly lifeless state for years, if necessary. In this form, it can be transported by the wind across the dry landscape to areas with water. It will revive within hours in a shallow bowl of water, unfolding and transforming into a fresh and green moss (苔藓).

Snake Plant

This is a striking houseplant that can be an especially good option for new plant owners who you might not trust to keep a plant alive. It grows happily in almost any condition. While it prefers bright light, it doesn't mind shade or even artificial light. Plus, thanks to its thick, fleshy leaves, it stores water with remarkable efficiency, which makes it survive without water in the earth.

(1) What is special about the bird's nest fern? A. It prefers shade. B. It is sun-loving. C. It tends to grow in the sink. D. It can return to life after death.
(2) Which plant will test its owner's gardening skill most? A. Bird's nest fern. B. Chinese money plant. C. Resurrection plant. D. Snake plant.
(3) What do resurrection plant and snake plant have in common? A. They demand attentive owners. B. They are very drought-tolerant. C. They will curl for self-protection. D. They can store water for drought.

Some parents may have had trouble getting their kids away from electronics and outside this summer. But for one Virginia family, this wasn't the case. Josh and Cassie Sutton recently completed a fall-length hike of the Appalachian Trail with their son, Harvey.

At just 5 years old, Harvey, who earned the nickname "Little Man" from fellow hikers, is one of the youngest people known to have completed the roughly 2, 100-mile trail that stretches across 14 states in 209 days.

When Harvey was 2 years old, his parents began training him for hiking by going on mini walks. They slowly increased their mileage day by day- eventually making him adapt to his big adventure. "A lot of people are surprised at how well be did. They're like, 'How did you get your 5-year-old to do that while my 5-year old won't even walk half a mile without com-Paining?'" Mom Cassie Sutton said.

The Sutton s said that while the adventure of the 2, 100- mile hike was fun as a family, it did have its challenges- especially when it came to keeping Harvey entertained. "We learned that he is gifted in hiking, but as long as were playing make-believe with him all day long, then he moves quickly and hikes a lot faster than a lot of us imagine," Josh Sutton said.

While the Sutton s have plans for more hikes and family adventures ahead, the family is getting adjusted to life at home again as Harvey begins his latest adventure; kindergarten.

(1) What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A. A 5 year old hiked 2, 100 miles in about 7 months. B. Josh earned the nickname "Little Man" because of his son. C. Harvey is the youngest person to cover the 2, 100 mile trail. D. One Virginia family had trouble getting away from electronics.
(2) What is the challenge of making Harvey finish the adventure? A. Playing make believe. B. Keeping him amused. C. Hiking fast enough, D. Having meals as a family.
(3) Which word can best describe Harvey in hiking? A. Negative. B. Naughty. C. Normal. D. Talented.
(4) What is Harvey's next adventure? A. To have more games. B. To get adjusted to family life. C. To receive preschool education, D. To have more hikes with his family.

In 1823, a young woman noticed a strange fossil on a beach near Lyme Regis, England. She dug out the bones and had them carried to her home. She carefully arranged the skeleton on a table. Then she saw something extraordinary. The creature's neck was a meter long-more than half the length of its body. It was unlike any animal living on Earth.

Even at a young age, Mary Anning had a talent for spotting "curies" fossils. Her father died in 1810, leaving her family in debt, so Mary began selling her fossils to collectors. A year later, aged just 12, she made her first major discovery—a crocodile-like skull with a long skeleton. It turned out to be a sea creature that lived long ago. Named ichthyosaur, or "fish-lizard", it was the first extinct animal known to science.

Fossil hunting brought in money, but it was a dangerous occupation. One day, a rock fall killed her dog and almost buried Mary. Despite the dangers, she continued to look for new finds. The long-necked fossil she uncovered in 1823 was another long-dead sea reptile. Known as a plesiosaur, it would inspire legends—including that of the Loch Ness Monster.

Mary was not only a skilled fossil hunter, she also carefully examined and recorded her finds. However, she received little credit from other scientists. Only one of her scientific writings was published in her lifetime, in 1839. She was also not allowed to join London's Geological Society, as only men could become members.

Mary Anning died in 1847, but her contributions have not been forgotten. Her finds are now displayed in museums in London and Paris. The beach near her home is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as the Jurassic Coast. Her life continues to inspire visitors hoping to find their own fossil wonders. According to Britain's Natural History Museum, Mary Anning was "the greatest fossil hunter the world has ever known". She was also a scientist who changed the way we think about life on Earth.

(1) The word “curies" in paragraph 2 means___________. A. beautiful B. huge C. common D. unusual
(2) Which of the following is true about Mary Anning? A. She won high praise from other scientists. B. She published several scientific articles in her lifetime. C. She had a narrow escape from a rock fall near the beach. D. She was later a member of the London Geological Society.
(3) Why does the author mention a UNESCO World Heritage Site? A. To show how Southern England has the most important fossil finds in the world. B. To persuade the readers that the Jurassic Coast is in need of protection. C. To give an example of how important Mary Anning's discoveries are to the world. D. To encourage more people to find their own fossil wonders.

For 30 years, Alaska's northern fur seal population has not increased. But the ocean mammals are appearing in growing numbers in one unlikely place-a small island that forms the tip of an active undersea volcano. Bogoslof Island is distant and unpopulated. It sits in the eastern Bering Sea. Openings on the ground there release mud, steam and sulfurous gases, but northern fur seals find the island to be a good place for giving birth and raising their young.

It is unclear why the seals have chosen to live on an active volcanic island instead of other unpopulated islands in the area. "The surface is covered with these big blocks, some as big as 10 meters in length, which were exploded out of the vent,” said Chris Waythomas, a U.S. Geological Survey research scientist.

Northern fur seals get their name from their extremely thick fur; they have about 60,000 hairs per square centimeter. When Russian Emperor Alexander II needed money and decided to sell Alaska to the United States in 1867, fur was one of the future state's known valuables.

Most of the world's northern fur seals live in the eastern Bering Sea area. They live in the ocean from November to June and return to land in summer, when they breed and nurse pups. Between 1950 and 1988, the northern fur seal population dropped from 2.1 million to 1.1 million. Scientists do not know why they have not made a comeback. Northern fur seals were first seen on Bogoslof in 1980. NOAA researchers have since carried out periodic studies of the population.

Volcanic activity on Bogoslof has remained mostly stable. But Gelatt's crew chose not to camp there during their week-long visit in August. They feared an explosion could shoot up huge rocks. Instead, they made day trips from a secured boat. The crew counted the number of seals and examined whether images taken from above by an unpiloted aircraft could be used in future counts.

(1) What's the text mainly about? A. The scientists are worried about the extinction of seals. B. The environment protection is crucial to wild animals. C. The northern fur seals are on the rise on Bogoslof Island. D. The northern fur seals like distant and unpopulated places.
(2) What do Chris Waythomas words mean? A. The conditions on Bogoslof Island are tough and terrible. B. An active undersea volcano makes Bogoslof Island livable. C. Bogoslof Island is suitable for the northern fur seals to live on D. It's reasonable for the northern fur seals to live on a small island.
(3) What can be learned from the paragraph 3 & 4? A. The northern fur seals breed and nurse pups in winter. B. The northern fur seals' thick fur is of no value nowadays. C. There were about 1.1 million northern fur seals on the island. D. It's not clear why northern fur seal population has not increased.
(4) How did researchers guarantee their safety during the study? A. By observing in the distance. B. By doing the research inside an aircraft. C. By taking a boat with protective equipment every day. D. By using photos shot by an unmanned vehicle to count seals.
