Many of our family traditions centered around food. We'd gather in the kitchen for every birthday and holiday and enjoy delicious food. My grandparents always held Christmas dinner, which included chicken cacciatore, sausage, meatballs and salad. But right before we sat down to eat, my grandmother would pull me aside to show me the dish she made just for me: fresh pasta (意大利面) with tomato sauce.

It was a simple dish, but to me it was warm food that filled me with happiness. But more than that, it made me feel like I belonged. I was a shy kid and, in many situations, I felt ignored. And here was my grandmother, showing me that I mattered.

Years went by; I moved away and got married. I'd visit throughout the years and my grandmother would serve up a plate of pasta.

When my daughter was born in 2020, for the first time in my life I wasn't about to make the trip back home for Christmas. I cooked my family's traditional foods and my husband and I had a big meal that included, of course, fresh pasta. I had a video call with my grandmother and showed her the pasta. Shortly after the holidays she passed away unexpectedly.

It seemed so unfair that my grandmother passed away soon after I became a parent. I'd hold my daughter and think about how I could tell her what an amazing great-grandmother she had.

In my sadness I came to an answer: food. Late at night after my daughter had gone to bed, I'd go to the kitchen and learn how to make fresh pasta, cooking my grandmother's recipes. Before long I started experimenting, making a bit changes to classic recipes. When my daughter got a little older, I began making special dishes for her with my grandmother's flavors in mind.

I know that no matter how hard I try, my daughter will never have a bowl pasta with sauce exactly like the ones my grandmother would make for me. While that makes me sad, she'll still get to have my pasta sauce. I know there're two things she'll never lack for in this life: pasta and love.

Humanitarian(人道主义的)groups and lawmakers have criticized Italian authorities for preventing migrants who were not considered to be "vulnerable(脆弱的)"from disembarking(登陆)from rescue ships in Sicily on Sunday.

Charities and politicians blamed the selection process as illegal and regarded the actions of the Italian government as inhumane, reported the Associated Press news service, or AP. Italy's new government is reportedly targeting foreign-flagged rescue ships in a new procedure that is part of a regulation brought about by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.

Italy allowed a rescue ship carrying 179 refugees and migrants to enter a port in Sicily on Sunday and then later begin disembarking children and sick or "vulnerable" people, but 35 men on board were blocked from getting off the ship, reported the Reuters news agency. Later, agencies reported that 144 people had been allowed to disembark the Humanity 1 rescue ship, which sailed under a German flag. In the afternoon, 357 people were allowed off the Geo Barents ship operated by Doctors Without Borders, which sails under a Norwegian flag, but 215 people remained blocked on board.

Authorities continued to refuse safe harbor for hundreds of migrants onboard two other ships in nearby waters, said the AP. Humanity 1's captain refused to leave the port of Catania "until all survivors rescued from great suffering at sea have been disembarked", said SOS Humanity, the German-run charity that operates the ship. The charity strongly criticized Piantedosi's decision to only allow vulnerable people to disembark and on Monday said it would launch legal action against the Italian government, claiming Italy's actions violate European law and the Geneva Refugee Convention.

The BBC noted that Italy is one of the main entry points into Europe, and, according to the United Nations, 85, 000 migrants have arrived there on small, overcrowded boats since the start of the year. Italy's new prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has promised to take action to stop those making the hazardous journeys across the Mediterranean.

Nongovernmental organizations say coastal nations are responsible by the law of the sea to rescue people who are suffering and that they are responsible to provide a safe port as soon as possible.

Till Rummenhohl, head of operations at SOS Humanity, said people were being "held hostage(人质)"onboard the Humanity 1 vessel. "We had health authorities onboard who decided who's weak enough, who is basically in urgent medical case and who's not, " Rummenhohl told DW News. "The people are not really sure what's happening to them. They have an uncertain future. They are afraid of being pushed back from Italy, into international waters or even to Libya. That's their greatest fear," he said.

(2) Which can replace the underlined word "hazardous" in paragraph 5? A. Comfortable. B. Thrilling. C. Long. D. Dangerous.
(3) What is Rummenhohl's point of view according to the last paragraph? A. Italy's actions agreed with European law and the Geneva Refugee Convention. B. Illegal migrants should be pushed back into international waters. C. Coastal countries should save people who are suffering at sea. D. Illegal migrants were supposed to be held hostage onboard.
(4) Which can serve as the best title for the news report? A. Italy provides safe shelters for refugees B. Italy prevents migrants from leaving ships C. Humanityl's captain refuses to leave the port of Catania D. Many migrants arrive in Italy on small, overcrowded boats

There's an enormous amount of personal health information people now feed or tap into digital monitors, health apps, search engines and other online tools. If the same information were provided in your doctor's office, your privacy would be safeguarded. But that's not how the digitized health world works.

Instead, we have an ecosystem of abuse in which health technology companies operate largely outside the law that requires doctors and other medical personnel, hospitals and insurers to protect an individual's health information.

That means technology companies can — and do — dig your digital data for clues about your health status, accessing information like prescriptions you have purchased and other health services you might have sought, and potentially link this information to your name, address, email address and other personally identifying information. The data can then be used by platforms including Facebook and Google to help advertisers target promotions or other communications to you.

It's a gaping hole in health privacy protections that comes from the privacy law, which protects interactions between patients, medical professionals and insurers but does not, in most cases, protect patient health data that is recorded on new technologies.

Closing the patient privacy gap can- and should -be a priority for lawmakers The consequences of digital exposure for those seeking reproductive services have drawn significant concern and attention. These worries are reasonable. But reproductive care is only one area of health services where private patient information is digitally disclosed.

Therefore, lawmakers must take action to protect the privacy of people who are now online for all manners of personal, professional and other reasons. Until then, a narrowly targeted approach that protects health privacy may be politically easier to come into effect. The explosion of digital health technology and the dramatic increase in its use in the past few years require it greatly.

(1) What can we learn about the present situation of the digitized health world? A. Personal health data is used for other purposes. B. Personal health information is difficult to identify. C. Targeted promotions are used to improve people's health. D. Medical personnel protect the personal health information well.
(2) What's the author's attitude towards the present privacy law? A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Cautious. D. Ambiguous.
(3) What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 6 refer to? A. The spread of health service. B. People's privacy. C. A narrowly targeted approach. D. The explosion of digital technology.
(4) What is the purpose of the text? A. To advocate improvement in the privacy law. B. To report cases of illegal information exposure. C. To explain how the digitized health world works. D. To introduce a debate on the effect of technology.

Adults are often embarrassed about asking for help. It's an act that can make people feel sensitive. The moment you ask for directions, after all,you reveal(泄露)that you may be lost. Seeking someone's assistance can make you feel like you are broadcasting your incompetence. New research suggests young children don't seek help in school, even when they need it, for the same reason.

To learn more about how children think about seeking help, we asked 576 children, ages four to nine, to predict the behavior of two kids in a story. One of the characters genuinely wanted to be smart, and the other merely wanted to seem smart to others.

Children thought that the kid who wanted to seem smart would be less likely to ask for assistance. They could still conceive of(想象)situations in which the kid who wanted to seem smart would seek help: when assistance could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.

We also found that they recognize several more behaviors that might make a child appear less smart in front of fellow kids, such as admitting to failure or modestly downplaying successes. Children are therefore acutely aware of several ways in which a person's actions might make them appear less clever in the eyes of others.

However, a number of solutions can be found to help children. Our first instinct may be to motivate seeking help by emphasizing its educational benefits. But reputational barriers likely require reputation-based solutions. For example, instructors could create activities in which each student becomes an "expert" on a different topic, and then children must ask one another for help to master all of the material. If seeking help is understood as a commonplace classroom activity, kids may be less likely to think of it as indicative(表明)of one's ability.

Seeking help could even be framed as socially desirable. After all, asking for help often benefits not just the help seeker but also others listening in who have similar questions or struggles.

(1) What feature do the adults and young children share? A. They seldom ask for directions. B. They are afraid of being laughed at. C. They hesitate to seek assistance. D. They regard themselves as incompetence.
(2) What conclusion can be drawn from the research? A. Teachers should praise kids for seeking assistance. B. Assistance only works when sought privately. C. It seems possible that children themselves are not struggling. D. Children care deeply about the way others think about them.
(3) How does the author explain the solution in Paragraph 5? A. By making a comparison. B. By referring to an example. C. By introducing a concept. D. By telling a school story.
(4) Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Why Kids Are Afraid to Ask for Help. B. Seeking Help Makes Kids Feel Uncomfortable. C. Unwillingness to Seek Help Stop Academic Progress. D. How Can We Help Children Overcome the Barrier.
