Two powerful NASA telescopes have detected the oldest and most distant black hole ever found. Data collected via energetic X-rays by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and James Webb Space Telescope has helped astronomers spot the signature of a growing black hole within the early universe just 470 million years after the big bang, which occurred

13. 8 billion years ago. The discovery, described in a study published in Nature Astronomy, may help astronomers figure out how some of the first supermassive black holes formed in the universe.

"We needed Webb to find this remarkably distant galaxy (星系) and Chandra to find its supermassive black hole, " said lead study author Akos Bogdan, in a statement. "We also took advantage of a cosmic magnifying glass (宇宙放大镜) that boosted the amount of light we detected. " He was referring to an effect called gravitational lensing (引力透镜效应), which occurs when closer objects act like a magnifying glass for distant objects. Gravity essentially twists and strengthens the light of distant galaxies in the background of whatever is doing the magnifying, enabling observations of otherwise invisible features.

Astronomers detected the black hole in a galaxy called UHZ

1. At first glance, the galaxy appeared in the same direction as a cluster of galaxies known as Abell 2744, which is located about

3. 5 billion light-years from Earth. But data collected by the Webb telescope showed that UHZl is actually much farther away and located beyond the cluster at

13. 2 billion light-years from Earth.

The team used the Chandra Observatory to detect superheated gas releasing X-rays within UHZ1, the obvious sign of a supermassive black hole growing in size. The detection was made possible by the Abell cluster of galaxies, which intensified the light of the UHZ1 galaxy and the X-rays released by the black hole by a factor of four.

Astronomers think the discovery will help them better understand how supermassive black holes appeared and reached their huge masses so soon after the beginning of the universe.

(1) What's the possible age of the newly-found black hole? A. 470 million years. B. 13. 33 billion years. C. 13. 8 billion years. D. 14. 27 billion years.
(2) What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The process of the research. B. The significance of the discovery. C. The contributors to the discovery. D. The background of the research.
(3) Which best shows the position of Abell 2744, Earth and UHZ1? A. B. C. D.
(4) Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Oldest and Most Distant Black Hole Spotted. B. Two Powerful NASA Telescopes Coming into Service. C. New Supporting Evidence of the Big Bang Theory Detected. D. Astronomers Figuring Out How the First Black Holes Formed.

Children are naturally curious about the world around them. When Chase Hansen was only 4 years old, he encountered homeless people for the first time while shopping with his dad at an outdoor mall in Salt Lake City, Nevada. It's no wonder that he had a lot of questions.

"Chase looked at me and said, 'Dad, who are these people? Why don't they have a place to stay?' " John Hansen recalled. "After I explained that they had run into hard times and were homeless, I knew that we were looking at an educational opportunity. My son wanted to help them."

The father and son convinced a local Jamba Juice store to donate more than 100 smoothies (果汁) and the pair gave them out to homeless people in a park.

After that, they came up with an even better idea. "I wanted a way to get to know people better," Chase said. "So, my dad and I decided to start taking some of the homeless people we'd met out to lunch."

"A lot of people walk right past homeless people and don't see the person," he said. "I know now that they're people just like us. They want to make a connection and not feel so alone in the world."

Hundreds of lunches later, they run a self-funded charity called Project Empathy(同情) to help inspire others to meet and to create relationships with the homeless people in their neighborhoods. The organization provides a list of resources that can help homeless people with food, housing and employment.

John said that what started as a way to spend quality time with his son has turned into a passion for both of them." "Chase and I realized that the country needed an army of people to practice empathy, and that by doing something as simple as taking a homeless person to lunch, we could maybe inspire others to do the same," he said. "Any time you can help to give someone a voice, it's empowering."

Online thrift (节俭) store thredUP has released its tenth annual Resale Report. The study, which assesses trends in the secondhand clothing industry, has an obviously positive tone. Resale is booming in the United States, as well as globally, and the secondhand market in the US is expected to more than double by 2026, reaching an impressive valuation of $82 billion.

This is serious growth that indicates a real shift in the way people approach shopping for clothes. For most, it's a way to save money in an inflationary (通货膨胀) economy. Forty-four percent of shoppers say they're cutting back on buying clothing-more than any category apart from restaurants. Some say secondhand is enabling them to keep enjoying the brands they love.

When choosing what to buy, people are increasingly careful about what can be resold. More than one-fifth of Gen Z (网络新生代) shoppers said they'll pay more for an item that they know they can resell, and 36% of Gen Z shoppers stock and clear their closets at the same monthly or weekly rate. More than half resold clothing last year. As resale becomes more accessible thanks to mobile technology and online platforms, increasing numbers of customers are keen to turn over their closets, which fuels the industry and keeps the market full of fresh finds, bringing people back for more.

Secondhand helps to relieve people's climate-related concerns. Thrifting is far better for the environment than buying new. As thredUP reported in 2021,buying used reduces an item's carbon footprint by 82%. Choosing used over new displaces 17.4 pounds of CO2 emissions. It requires far less water and energy to produce, and it spares that item from going to landfill, where it will break down and give off methane, a greenhouse gas more powerful than CO2.

It's great to hear such positive news. Thrifting is a no-brainer, when you stop to think about it-well-made and good-looking fashion that helps the planet while saving us money. The more mainstream it can get, the better off we'll all be.

(1) What does the booming of resale mean to most shoppers according to the text? A. Reducing expenses. B. Bringing down inflation. C. Focusing less on brands. D. Eating out more in restaurants.
(2) What promotes the development of the resale industry? A. Scientific development makes resale easier and more convenient. B. Many Gen Z shoppers choose used over new. C. Buying used has become a mainstream. D. Cleaning the closets is more frequent.
(3) What's the author's attitude to the resale of secondhand clothing? A. Disapproving. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Favorable.
(4) What's the best title for the text? A. Secondhand Clothing Improves Climate B. Secondhand Market Benefits Americans C. ThredUP Released A New Resale Report D. Secondhand Clothing Is A Hot Market
