Some of the greatest discoveries in science have been completely accidental. Then again, maybe science had a little help...

Ice Candy

One of America's favorite summertime treats came about thanks to a particularly cold night in the San Francisco Bay area in 1905. That's when 11-year-old Frank Epperson forgot a glass containing powdered soda mix, water and a wooden stick out at the doorway overnight. The next morning, Frank discovered the mixture had frozen around the stick. He popped it out of the cup, licked it…and summers were never the same!

Safety Glass

In 1903, French chemist Édouard Bénédictus accidentally dropped a glass bottle. To his surprise, the glass cracked but wasn't broken into pieces. Out of curiosity, he checked it carefully. As it turned out, the bottle hadn't been cleaned properly and was coated with a thin film of a kind of liquid plastic. A happy accident led to the discovery of safety glass.

YInMn Blue

In 2009, Mas Subramanian, a professor of materials science at Oregon State University, was testing out new materials for electronics in his lab with graduate students. A mixture of metal s went into the furnace. What came out was a striking blue mixture. The first new blue since cobalt (深蓝) was discovered in 1802, is called "YInMn Blue."

Penicillin

In 1928, Scottish researcher Alexander Fleming returned to his lab after a two-week vacation only to discover that mold (霉菌) from an open window had made an uncovered dish of bacteria dirty. Strangely enough, the mold stopped the bacteria from growing, giving the world its first antibiotic.

(1) Which discovery has a relatively short history? A. Ice candy. B. Safety glass. C. YInMn Blue. D. Penicillin.
(2) What do the four discoveries have in common? A. Science helped a lot. B. Lab experiments laid a basis. C. They were made by scientists. D. They were made by chance.
(3) Who are the intended readers of the text? A. Science students. B. Curiosity seekers. C. Science researchers. D. The general public.

South Koreans are about to get a year or two younger, thanks to a new law passed on Thursday that aims to standardize how age is calculated in the country.

At present, it's common for South Koreans to have not just one age, but three – an "international age," a "Korean age" and a "calendar age. " But to end confusion, the country's parliament has decreed(颁布法令)that from June 2023 all official documents must use the standard "international age. "

In South Korea, a person's "international age" refers to the number of years since they were born, and starts at zero – the same system used in most other countries. But when asked their age in informal settings, most South Koreans will answer with their "Korean age," which could be one or even two years older than their "international age. " Under this system, babies are considered one year old on the day they're born, with a year added every January 1. In some circumstances, South Koreans also use their "calendar age" – a kind of mashup (混搭) between international and Korean age – which considers babies as zero years old the day they're born and adds a year to their age every January 1.

Take "Gangnam Style" singer Psy, for example. Born on December 31, 1977, he is considered 44 by international age, 45 by calendar age, and 46 by Korean age.

If this sounds confusing, it is, with daily life in the country often switching between the hodgepodge (大杂烩) of different systems. Most people use Korean age, which has its roots in China, in everyday life and social interaction, while international age is more often used for legal and official matters – for instance, when dealing with civil laws. However, some laws – including those surrounding the legal ages for drinking, smoking, and military conscription (征兵) – use calendar age.

"The revision is aimed at reducing unnecessary socio-economic costs because legal and social disputes as well as confusion persist(持续存在)due to the different ways of calculating age," Yoo Sang-bum of the ruling People Power Party told parliament.

(2) Why does the author mention the example of singer Psy? A. To explain a rule.           B. To present a finding. C. To provide evidence.     D. To arouse readers' interest.
(3) In which of the following situation Korean age is used? A. Applying for a job. B. School registration. C. Introducing a friend.   D. Military conscription.

Even if you don't have to work, eat or sleep, you won't be able to get through all information on blogs and social networks. The problem we face is that much of this information seems very interesting at first glance. Actually, much of the information is unimportant, disposable and it distracts(分心)us from more meaningful pursuits. Worse still, when we spend lots of time consuming information from our social media streams, we may find it hard to concentrate on what we're doing and we have a tendency to forget what we have consumed anyway.

A new study from Sweden's KTH Royal Institute of Technology has found that too much social media exposure actually reduces your ability to process information and depletes your short-term working memory.

Our working memory plays a critical role in our capacity to filter information and remember what is valuable but it is not a limitless resource. Erik Fransén, a professor in Computer Science at KTH and the leader of this new study on social media overload says this can explain why our capacity for processing information begins to fail when we attempt to stuff more information in the working memory.

In fact, when you try to process the information like speech or video, you are going to need partly the same system of working memory, so you are reducing your own working memory capacity. And when you try to store many things in your working in your working memory, you get less good at processing information.

It is the periods of downtime of your brain—preferably disconnected from the distractions of your computer or smart phone—that are needed for memory consolidation and transferring important information to your exposure to new information. Besides, you can empty your mind of thoughts quickly to relax completely, go for a short walk or spend few minutes listening to music. This will help you improve your capacity to process information and increase your productivity.

(1) What can we learn about social media overload from Paragraph 1? A. It distracts our attention. B. It is beneficial to us. C. It brings us whatever we want. D. It keeps us informed of everything.
(2) Why does your capacity for processing information begin fall sometimes? A. Much of the information is unimportant. B. You don't make the most of your brain. C. You're less good at processing information. D. Your working memory is a limited source.
(3) What does the underline word "downtime" in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Support. B. Relaxation. C. Increase. D. Loss.
(4) Which is recommended to relax your brain? A. Listening to music for a while. B. Thinking over things carefully. C. Taking enough physical exercise. D. Focusing more on the present.
