I'd always been active-I was an aerobics(有氧运动)instructor for 30 years and was also a keen runner-but from the age of 40, I began having problems with my hip and knees and started getting joint and lower back pains. The pain became too much. I couldn't do the exercise that I was used to,and I started putting on weight. By my 50th birthday, I was nearly 90kg and felt so miserable. I was struggling with body confidence, and had lost my direction.

Fiends suggested I try Qigong classes, a Chinese form of yoga. I felt the benefits after the first class. I loved the slow movement, the connection back to breath and the emphasis on mindfulness-it was the focus I needed.

The general principle of Qigong -which is connected to Chinese medicine - is that you have to find balance in the body to allow the energy to flow around. Stress and injury cause blockages and lead to health problems.

For most of my life I'd always eaten healthily, but had fallen into bad habits of loving sugary carbs(碳水化合物食物), which led to my weight gain. Starting Qigong helped me go back to my healthy diet. The combination of the improved diet and exercise improved my mood. I'm even finally free of the joint pain that was troubling me.

It is ironic that I was a high-paced aerobics instructor for most of my life, who now does very slow,mindful movements. If you'd told me years ago that you can lose weight by doing this kind of practice,I wouldn't have believed you, but it makes sense to me now, that at this stage of my life, removing the stress from my body is really what it needs. Two years on I feel so much younger than I did the day I turned 50; I have more energy and I feel much happier in myself.

(1) What made the author stop her usual sport? A. Her old age. B. Her love for Qigong. C. Her physical pain. D. Her weight gain problem.
(2) What is the general principle of Qigong according to the author? A. One should eat a very strict diet. B. One should find his focus in life. C. One should exercise as much as possible. D. One should attain harmony within his body.
(3) What does the underlined word"ironic" in paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Funny B. Easy. C. Important. D. Common.
(4) What does the author try to convey in the last paragraph? A. Aging has negative effects on health. B. Chinese Yoga helps her keep healthy. C. High-paced sports are unsuitable for the elders. D. She prefers slow movements to high-paced ones.

"Anyone knows single parents who can't afford to get their child's hair done for school? I will braid (编辫子) it for free!" Brittany Starks wrote on a Facebook post.

She decided to offer her hair braiding services after a family friend delivered backpacks full of school supplies, clothing and shoes for Cayden and Ceniyah in early August. "At the time, I didn't have anything for my kids to start school," said Starks, who is in between homes and staying with her mother. "It meant so much to me."

The unexpected gift made a big difference to Starks and her children, and it motivated her to pay it forward. Starks, who works two receptionist jobs, also braids hair part-time. "The hair-braiding process involves washing, blow-drying, and finally dividing the hair into small sections and braiding it. It also requires multiple supplies — including combs, brushes, hair jam and additional pieces of hair to weave in. It costs anywhere from $150 to $400 at a salon (美发厅), depending on the style," Stacks explained. "But it can last for months and is a huge timesaver in the mornings."

When she wrote the Facebook post, she assumed only a handful of people would reach out, but before she knew it, she had 35 appointments booked. Her Facebook inbox was suddenly full of messages from single parents, whose stories of hardship and financial challenges mirrored her own.

"There's a huge need for this. I could really relate to a lot of the women who reached out, and it made me realize that what I was doing was really important," said Stacks. "What got me the most was seeing the kids smile." Given that there was less than two weeks before the start of school, Starks knew she needed to enlist help.

When the news came that my mother was hospitalized for a heart attack, I was in Peru on a hiking trip. That evening, before I could board the plane to Italy, I was informed that she had passed away. Sadness and the feeling of not being there for my mother when she needed me most broke all excuses I'd made up to stay away trying to make it as a "travel writer". There wasn't much I could do to stop that urge to denounce myself.

My mother Tundra stayed in her northern Italian world most of her life, where I always stood out as a freak and the one doing worthless silly things. But my stories from distant places aroused her curiosity and brought her comfort. To her, I was a courageous adventurer, and her words towards my achievements which are insignificant now pushed me forward on that unconventional path.

After handling my mother's affairs in Italy, I decided to leave for Penang Island, one of the most visited places in Penang, Malaysia. With all the international travel I'd done, in truth I'd always treated it more like a stop for necessary and urgent breaks, rather than a proper destination. Yet then, I missed its atmosphere that made me feel at home somehow.

Returning there, I reconnected with backwoods by going on hikes. It was hard to put my feelings into words, but the rainforest held something uniquely comforting. This experience was similar to stepping into an ancient, purer world that made one consider human nature and problems. Besides, the sound of strange insects was almost like a language, whispering to me that I should let go of the past, and only focus on current life. Like an oil leak, that suffering fell out of me and into every footprint left. 18 months passing, I look back on the time spent in the natural world and timeless environment, knowing I've pulled through.

(1) What does the underlined word "denounce" mean in the first paragraph? A. Worried. B. Favorable. C. Doubt. D. Encourage.
(2) What's the attitude of the author's mother to his travel? A. Blame. B. Support. C. Doubt. D. Excited.
(3) What did Penang Island mean to the author in the past? A. A special second home. B. A hard-to-reach destination. C. A distant tourist attraction. D. A much-needed resting place.
(4) What does the author intend to tell in the text? A. Hiking builds up his confidence. B. Penang is a good place to restart. C. Nature helps him overcome sorrow. D. It's important to live in the moment.
