Getting into college is a big step for high school graduates, and it comes with a lot of changes. For most students, it's the first time they're living away from home and managing their own life. Not surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates better prepared for college life.

Goal setting

When setting goals, whether they're academic, career, or personal, remember they should be attainable but not too easy, so that you really have to push yourself to achieve them, and feel rewarded when you do. Writing down your goals and breaking down each huge, long-term goal into smaller more practical ones can help make it feel more real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a roadmap to success.

Interpersonal skills

At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many others. Strong interpersonal skills will help you build relationships during this time, and get more out of them. If you feel that your interpersonal skills need some work, practice asking thoughtful questions and listening closely, develop your understanding by putting yourself in someone else's shoes, and enhance your self-confidence.

Studying

With fewer in-class hours and more on-your-own learning, you're required to really digest learning material rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in college you'll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of information obtained through reading, do research, and write papers. Organization is the key, so if you are not someone who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule.

Budgeting

Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many, it is at college that they develop it for the first time. Start by estimating your financial balance. Then give high priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much money to set aside every month to cover those costs. Don't forget about savings … and the fun stuff(movies, dinners out), too.

What you need to know

Follow these tips for a smooth and safe journey:

Be visible

Always wear a helmet and at night ensure your bike is fitted with working lights—it's the law. Consider reflective clothes when riding in the dark.

Use the lane

You're allowed to use the full width of any road lane you ride on. Taking the centre of the lane maximizes your visibility and your sight lines and gives you room to avoid drains, gutters and car doors.

Watch for car doors

Don't rely on car drivers and passengers to look for you when opening their doors. Ride wide of the door zone.

Watch for pedestrians

People walking always have right of way on shared paths. Treat them with respect. When passing. use your bell early, keep a safe distance and be ready to stop if needed.

Stop at red lights

A bicycle is regarded as a vehicle in NSW and must obey all road rules, including stopping at red traffic lights and bicycle crossing lights. Heavy fines apply.

Use the diamonds

Look for diamond-shaped markings at intersections on cycle ways. This is where sensors are located to trigger the lights. Line your wheels along the diamond strip, stop and wait for a green light. If there are no diamonds, keep your wheels on the central wire cut.

NSW road rules

You can:

·Pass other vehicles on the left, except when those vehicles are indicating and turning left.

·Ride a maximum of two abreast in a lane as long as you are not more than 1.5 metres apart.

·Travel in bus, tram and transit lanes.

You cannot:

·Ride on the footpath, unless you are under the age of 16, or accompanying a rider under the age of 16, have a medical exemption or if the footpath is a designated shared path.

·Ride in a bus-only lane.

Bike share

No bike? Why not try a share bike to get around Sydney? Download an app from one of the providers to find a bike nearby, unlock and ride to your destination. Find out more about bike sharing in Sydney at cycleways. Sydney

(1) What will happen if you run a red light when cycling? A. You'll be fine. B. You'll be sentenced. C. You'll pay big money. D. You'll be warned by police.
(2) Which of the following is the rule to be obeyed when on bike? A. You can pass other vehicles on the left freely. B. Riding alongside with several cyclists in a lane is allowed. C. It is a must to fix a working light on your bike at night. D. You can travel in bus-only, tram and transit lanes.
(3) What's the text? A. A cycling introduction. B. A travel leaflet. C. A safety brochure. D. A tour guide.

Guanmei, a 65-year-old woman of the Dong ethnic group, is the inheritor of the Grand Song of Dong (侗族大歌), a national intangible cultural heritage in China. Her hometown Zaidai Village in Guizhou, southwestern China, is home to the Grand Song of the Dong ethnic group.

The Grand Song of Dong dates from more than 2,500 years ago. The way Dong singers use their vocal cords (声带) is different from how formally trained singers do. It is a folk chorus with multi-parts, no conductor, and no accompaniment. Organically growing from their natural surroundings, it is recognized internationally as "the sound of Nature."

Before the Dong people had a writing system in 1958,the Dong culture, their history and stories were all recorded by means of songs. As a Dong saying goes, "Rice feeds the body and songs enrich the soul". The Dong people sing right from their childhood. While not singing, they all work in their rice field.

Guanmei has been singing the Grand Song of Dong all her life, making her a famous singing teacher in her hometown and nearby areas. "The songs are our means of passing on wisdom, knowledge and life experiences to others. I will not exist in this world 100 years later, but Grand songs will. I'm honored to do this job," Guanmei said.

Kind-hearted, Guanmei has been volunteering to teach the Grand Song of Dong to the Dong children for over 30 years. Now she has more than 300 students. Guanmei is pleased to see the village children come to her house willingly when they have free time.

"Nowadays, more and more young people leave the village and settle in cities. Decades later, the Dong children out of the village might know nothing about Grand songs. We should do something just now. It's our mission. What is once lost might be lost forever," added Guanmei.

(1) What makes the Grand Song of Dong known as "the sound of Nature"? A. The outstanding conductor. B. The special musical instrument. C. The attractive natural environment. D. The inspiration from nature.

(3) How does Guanmei feel about the future of Grand songs? A. Concerned. B. Sympathetic. C. Optimistic. D. Satisfied.
(4) What's the author's main purpose in writing the passage? A. To call on young people to return to the Dong village. B. To guide the Dong children to learn the Grand Song of Dong. C. To show a woman's efforts to keep the Dong culture alive. D. To instruct people to appreciate the Grand Song of Dong.
