A British woman, Dr. Mantri, growing up in India started to notice his son, Dhruv, was struggling with simple arithmetic when he was in fifth-grade. After noticing this, she started employing an abacus (算盘) to help her son visually comprehend mathematics.

"I would ask him something like 35 minus 13 and he couldn't do it." said Dhruv's mom Dr. Mantri. "I decided to change the way he looked at numbers," she said. "An abacus is a tried and tested method, and the Egyptians used them for building the pyramid." In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus and would go on to become a whizz kid with numbers, with even his classmates' parents reaching out for help.

She never thought she would teach her son using an abacus, which she used as a child in India and it was always helpful. Within six days she started to notice a difference and see results. So dramatic was the turnaround, that school staff asked him to perform with the abacus at an assembly, where some parents even came to ask for advice on using it for their kids.

IT specialist Dr. Mantri said the humble abacus can be used for calculations into the trillions and kids enjoy learning on it because it's like a game. "It becomes a playing tool for younger children, for it feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and visualize them." She added.

By the age of 12, Dhruv was giving online cyber security seminars and is now pursuing a career in data science and analytics. Dhruv has now landed an apprenticeship (实习) at an international firm. During the four-year apprenticeship, he will spend one day a week studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Glasgow Caledonian University. "He is so confident now and I am so proud," she said, with Dhruv adding "I don't think my teachers would have guessed that I would be following a career in data science at that time."

There can be no doubt that Stephen King, New York Time's Best-Selling author, has found success in many aspects, but it wasn't always like this. King witnessed tragedy and horrors from the very beginning. When he was 2 years old, his father told his mom that he was going out to get cigarettes but in fact, he never came back, he had abandoned his family.

In 1973, Stephen King started his amazing journey of success when he published his first novel Carrie, which is scary. The rest followed from after that as he published many amazing books like The Shining, IT,Firestarter, andCujo.All of these books became instant classics and got their own movie and television shows adaptions.

(1) What is mainly talked about about Stephen King in the first two paragraphs?  A. His achievements in writing. B. His unfortunate childhood. C. His difficulty in supporting the family. D. His mother's bitter experiences.
(2) What left Stephen King not even speaking a single word?  A. He was knocked down by a passing train. B. He was badly criticized by a close friend. C. He was depressed by the constant moves. D. He was heart-struck by a terrible accident.
(3) What does the underlined word "demotivated" in paragraph 3 mean?  A. Discouraged. B. Relaxed. C. Embarrassed. D. Inspired.

200, 000 miles from Earth, the crew of the third manned mission(使命)to the Moon faced an astronaut's worst situation: an explosion on the spacecraft. It's what happened in the Oscar-winning film Apollo 13, but it's also a true story.

The lift-off of Apollo 13 took place on 11th April 1970. Two days into the mission, the three-man crew were in big trouble. They had been carrying out normal checks when there was a loud bang. Warning lights were starting to flash. Looking out into space, they could see a trail of gas—oxygen was escaping from the spacecraft. They sent out a short message to the scientists back on Earth: "Houston, we've had a problem here. " At first, they thought that a meteor(流星)had hit them, but they later found out that a short circuit(电路)had caused an oxygen container to explode. Whatever the cause, they knew there was no time to lose. Their electricity supply in the command module(指令舱)depended on that oxygen and pretty soon they would run out of both.

The only solution was to move into the lunar module—the part of the spacecraft that would have landed on the Moon. Now though, they were using it as a kind of lifeboat. With its own power supply, oxygen and water, the three men could survive in the lunar module and return to Earth. There was another problem though. In an enclosed(封闭的)space like a lunar module, the carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)the crew was breathing out was dangerous. The equipment to clear the air of carbon dioxide was only built for two people. Now it had to deal with three. Amazingly, the crew managed to build a piece of equipment out of materials onboard to reduce the carbon dioxide to a safe level.

There was one final challenge. The lunar module wasn't strong enough to re-enter Earth's atmosphere so the crew had to go back into the damaged command module. To everyone's relief, the crew of Apollo 13 arrived safely in the South Pacific Ocean on April 17th. Although the crew didn't land on the Moon, NASA still considered the mission a success.

(1) What was the astronauts' first reaction to the explosion? A. They went out to land on the Moon. B. They informed scientists on Earth. C. They moved into the lunar module. D. They looked into the cause of the explosion.
(2) How did the astronauts solve their air situation in the lunar module? A. By lowering the carbon dioxide level. B. By moving back to the command module. C. By creating a new oxygen supply. D. By limiting the oxygen use.
(3) Which is the CORRECT order of the following sentences?

a. A short circuit caused an explosion.

b. The crew moved to into the lunar module.

c. The crew went back into the command module.

d. The astronauts landed on the Earth successfully.

e. The astronauts sent a message to the scientists on earth.

f. The crew managed to reduce the carbon dioxide to a safe level.

A. aebfcd. B. aecdbf. C. eabcfd. D. eadbfc.
(4) Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. A Successful Mission B. An Amazing Adventure C. Deep Space Exploration D. Life-and-Death Drama in Space

Tiny homes have been popular as home prices have climbed to new heights and people have looked for creative ways to downsize. We've seen many design concepts, including storage units and buses, but Jim Dotzenrod and his daughter Danielle recently came up with a unique one. The pair worked together on the family project to transform a 1973 train caboose (乘务员专用车厢) into the sleeper car.

The CR Station Train Caboose, as it's known on Airbnb, which has become somewhat of its own tourist destination in the small town that houses it, is available to rent for $124 a night, and has an excellent rating of 4.86 out of 5 from more than 300 guests on the booking website.

According to Insider, the project began when Jim saw a bunch of train cabooses along the side of the road during a drive out of town. He said he wondered if he could change one of them into a place where people could live or stay. So, he bought the 52,000-pound caboose for $8,000. Getting the caboose to its final home took some creative thinking and some heavy-duty equipment.

Danielle said the work was challenging, especially since she and her dad both have day jobs. But their schedules didn't stop them from finishing the project. "My dad can do anything he sets his mind to—like, absolutely anything—but my dad is so low maintenance himself," Danielle told the website. "So when we built this together it was a good combination because he could build whatever and have me pushing him like, 'Hey, let's make this as cool as we can.'"

This caboose also has Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, a refrigerator, a shower and more. So, if you're ever traveling in Iowa and want to experience something special, book a stay at the CR Station Train Caboose!

(1) What can we know about the CR Station Train Caboose? A. It can only be booked online. B. It has become a local attraction. C. It offers a new concept in home decoration. D. It was transported to the town with little effort.
(2) The words "low maintenance" in paragraph 4 indicate Jim Dotzenrod is ______. A. easy and pleasant to deal with B. determined to do what he wants C. excellent at building houses D. experienced in project design
(3) What is the purpose of the last paragraph? A. To introduce a lifestyle. B. To share an experience. C. To show a travel trend. D. To make an advertisement.
