1.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项宗选出最佳选项。

Personal growth doesn't necessarily only happen when the conditions are perfect. Seeds tend to develop only when conditions are right. A seed will remain dormant (休眠) until moisture (湿度) and temperature are favorable for growth. Unfortunately, as humans, we don't always have the luxury of growing when conditions are just right. Sometimes you must cultivate (促进) personal growth and flower where you're planted, often in spite of external (外部的) circumstances.

For much of my life, I let external circumstances control my happiness. If things weren't going well, then I wasn't well. I told myself that I would be happier if conditions were right. With this mindset, I gave myself permission to stay emotionally dormant. I was waiting for things around me to change before I would do the work to become a better version of myself. In other words, I made my personal growth conditional on external circumstances.

The problem with waiting for change outside of yourself is that you might have to wait a very long time, maybe even forever. And if you stay dormant while waiting, you aren't growing. You're simply stuck in place. You certainly aren't becoming the better version of yourself that you want to be.

If you want to engage in personal growth, like planting seeds, you have to do some work to make it happen. You can't wait around for everything to fall into place. Start with pulling up your emotional weeds. Examine yourself and remove the pessimistic thoughts and behaviors that are holding you back. Then, work on the foundation that you have. Practice positive life habits that build your self-respect and happiness.

Personal growth is something you can fight for. It may not come naturally, but when you develop this mindset, you will flower no matter where you're planted.

Kenya's wildlife officials have made a free mobile phone app, Makenya, to help track wild animals in the country.

Kenya is home to nearly 400 species of mammals. Officials say it is getting more difficult to protect them, as climate change and human activities damage their natural environment.

The app lets any user who sees a wild mammal identify it and give its location. Uses can also give other details. "You can also add the behavior. When you see this animal what are they doing? Are they resting? Are they running away? Are they feeding? What are they doing at the moment you see them? said Dr. Simon Musil, a wildlife researcher.

According to Musila, there is a need to have many people use the app to get more information about the animals. This can help the small number of mammal specialist in KenyA. The specialists have kept records of the animals' changing environments and survival conditions. Many people, including safari guides, visitors, student or anyone who goes out and sees the animals could also use the app. They can upload images and add details, such as the number of mammals and their exact locations.

Samson Onyuok, one of the app users, said he is proud to help protect animals in his country. As a Kenyan, that is his little way of contributing to the conservation initiatives. Users like him have reported more than 2500 mammal sightings since August.

Experts say that while Africa is not the cause of much climate change, it is badly affected by it. Dr. Philip Muruthi, director of the African Wildlife Foundation, said that the birth rate of rare mammals (哺乳动物) and the survival rate of young ones are dropping.

"It is very hard to benefit or manage what you don't know," he said. "That is why this is so important. It is going to tell us which species we have, where they are, and maybe which ones are highly endangered, what we need to do about them. And especially not just the big things but also the small things, like the bats."

(1) What are users of Makenya advised to do?  A. Upload the detail of the spotted animals. B. Feed the hungry animals in the wild. C. Keep the running animals insight. D. Take a picture with the spotted animals.
(2) Which of the following can best describe Samson Onyuok?  A. Hardworking. B. Responsible. C. Careful. D. Patient.
(3) Why does Dr. Philip Muruthi consider the app significant?  A. It is developed by Kenyan officials. B. It costs just a little for Kenyan users. C. It is internationally supported. D. It presents overall cases of animal in KenyA.
(4) What is the text mainly about?  A. Endangered animals in KenyA.  B. Research on animals tracking. C. Hi-tech for animal protection. D. Popular apps to admire wild animals.

Would you BET on the future of this man? He is 53 years old. Most of his adult life has been a losing struggle against debt and misfortune. A war injury has made his left hand stop functioning, and he has often been in prison. Driven by heaven-knows-what motives, he determines to write a book.

The book turns out to be one that has appealed to the world for more than 350 years. That former prisoner was Cervantes, and the book was Don Quixote (《堂吉诃德》). And the story poses an interesting question: why do some people discover new vitality and creativity to the end of their days, while others go to seed long before?

We've all known people who run out of steam before they reach life's halfway mark. I'm not talking about those who fail to get to the top. We can't all get there. I'm talking about people who have stopped learning on growing because they have adopted the fixed attitudes and opinions that all too often come with passing years.

Most of us, in fact, progressively narrow the variety of our lives. We succeed in our field of specialization and then become trapped in it. Nothing surprises us. We lose our sense of wonder. But, if we are willing to learn, the opportunities are everywhere.

The things we learn in maturity seldom involve information and skills. We learn to bear with the things we can't change. We learn to avoid self-pity. We learn that however much we try to please, some people are never going to love us—an idea that troubles at first but is eventually relaxing.

With high motivation and enthusiasm, we can keep on learning. Then we will know how important it is to have meaning in our life. However, we can achieve meaning only if we have made a commitment to something larger than our own little egos(自我), whether to loved ones, to fellow humans, to work, or to some moral concept.

Many of us equate(视……等同于) "commitment" with such "caring" occupations as teaching and nursing. But doing any ordinary job as well as one can is in itself an admirable commitment. People who work toward such excellence—whether they are driving a truck, or running a store—make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They've learned life's most valuable lesson.

(2) What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. End one's struggle for liberty. B. Waste one's energy taking risks. C. Miss the opportunity to succeed. D. Lose the interest to continue learning.
(3) What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5? A. A tough man can tolerate suffering. B. A wise man can live without self-pity. C. A man should try to satisfy people around him. D. A man should learn suitable ways to deal with life.
(4) What is the author's purpose in writing the passage? A. To provide guidance on leading a meaningful adult life. B. To stress the need of shouldering responsibilities at work. C. To state the importance of generating motivation for learning. D. To suggest a way of pursuing excellence in our lifelong career.

A year ago, I decided to create a more environmentally friendly kitchen, focusing on reducing the single-use products such as plastic bags and paper towels. I'm not going to sugarcoat my experience. It takes commitment and a willingness to change long-held habits. In creating my kitchen, I tried a lot of different alternative products and some plain old common sense. The result, however, has been worth the effort. I'm recycling more and relying less on single-use products and I'm saving money too.

I'm not kidding when I say that I used to really love plastic storage bags, so this was, perhaps, the biggest challenge for me. Switching to reusable storage bags is a financial investment, but the cost is reasonable considering that I previously spent at least $ 100 annually on single-use plastic bags and wrap. I will check online periodically for recycling updates, where a zero-waste box for kitchen items is offered, from party supplies to mixed-material food containers.

I'm a clean freak (怪人) and used to go through an amount of paper towels on a daily basis, but it's easy enough to take old T-shirts or towels and cut them up to use to wipe down surfaces. I'm also a fan of bamboo paper towels, which have the look and feel of traditional paper towels, yet are made from a highly renewable source and also break down in just 45 days. Better yet, they can be reused up to 100 times. As for kitchen sponges (海绵擦), I keep an eye out for those made with natural and recyclable materials.

When purchasing household items online from companies like Amazon or Jet, I will ask to have them shipped in as few boxes as possible or as small a box as possible if a single item is to be sent. I'll let the company know that they should pay more attention to how it is packaging items for delivery.

(1) What is the author's main purpose of creating her kitchen? A. To reduce waste and recycle more. B. To save money.  C. To change her long-held habits. D. To make it cleaner and more practical.
(2) What does the underlined word "sugarcoat" in paragraph 1 mean? A. Get interested B. Make attractive. C. take place. D. Give up.
(3) In creating her kitchen, what does the author do? A. Chooses to use the recyclable or reusable kitchen items. B. Goes through an amount of paper towels on a daily basis. C. Checks online periodically to buy zero-waste box. D. Begins to recycle more single-use plastic bags.
(4) What can we learn about the author from the text? A. She prefers to have her purchases packed in small boxes. B. She is used to traditional paper towels. C. She has a good knowledge of financial investment. D. She has strong environmental awareness.
