On a break from his studies in the MIT Media Lab, Anirudh Sharma traveled home to Mumbai, India. While there, he noticed that throughout the day his T-shirts were gradually gathering something that looked like dirt. "I realized this was air pollution, or sooty (像煤一样) particulate matter (PM), made of black particles released from exhaust (尾气) of vehicles," Sharma says. "This is a major health issue." Soot consists of tiny black particles, about 2.5 micrometers or smaller, made of carbon produced by incomplete burning of fossil fuels.

Back at MIT, Sharma set out to help solve this air-pollution issue. After years of research, Sharma's startup Graviky Labs has developed technology that attaches to exhaust systems of diesel generators (柴油发电机) to collect particulate matter. Scientists at Graviky then turn it into ink, called Air-Ink, for artists around the world. So far, the startup has collected I.6 billion micrograms of particulate matter. More than 200 gallons of Air-Ink have been harvested for a growing community of more than 1,000 artists, from Bangalore to Boston, Shanghai, and London.

Posted all over Graviky Lab's Facebook page today are photos of art made from the Air-Ink and paint, including street wall paintings, body art and clothing prints. At first, there was still no specific application for the ink. Then the startup decided to find new ways to further spread its mission. It chose to do so through art. "Art helps us raise awareness about where the ink and paint comes from. Air pollution knows no borders. Our ink sends a message that pollution is one of the resources in our world that's the hardest to collect and use. But it can be done," Sharma says.

I spent my childhood collecting and pressing four-leaf clovers(三叶草)into books at my mother's house. I started with big cloth-and-leather-bound books. When I ran out of bound volumes,I began to slip my treasures into anything I could find,such as old fiction paperbacks and cookbooks. The same is true in my house today. Shake a book,and a treasure just might fall into your hand.

A few years ago,in Nova Scotia,my husband and I pulled off the road for a picnic. The ground was thick with clovers. Some shoots had four,five,or even six leaves. I lined them up on the picnic table to admire. To me,it was simple. The differences in their shapes made them stand out,breaking the pretty pattern of the common clovers with three perfect leaves.

Two summers back,while waiting for an airport shuttle in Munich,I found a tiny four-leaf clover in a traffic circle and put it in my passport. On the way home,my husband and I were upgraded to business class. All of my friends owed it to the clover. I think it's some likely that we were upgraded because a flight was postponed,which left us trapped in two cities for several hours.

People disagree about whether the luck comes for finding or possessing a clover. Some believe that the luck is lost if the four-leaf clover is shown to somebody else,while others think that the luck doubles if it is given away. I believe that positivity is compounded by sharing. I feel lucky to find the clovers so often,but I don't think they influence my life anymore than it does to share any thing a little special with a friend or a stranger.

(1) What was the author's hobby as a child? A. Keeping four-leaf clovers. B. Collecting different kinds of books. C. Reading a lot of leather-bound books. D. Decorating her mother's house with various treasures.
(2) What did the author do when she had a picnic? A. She picked some extraordinary clovers. B. She cleared a road fully covered with clovers. C. She decided to stay in Nova Scotia to enjoy clovers. D. She damaged some pretty kinds of conventional clovers.
(3) What resulted in the author's being upgraded to business class? A. The friends' help. B. The flight delay. C. Her husband's company. D. Her passport with the tiny four-leaf clover.
(4) What is the author's purpose of writing the text? A. To advise readers to look for clovers. B. To encourage readers to share with others. C. To show readers the influence of good luck. D. To tell readers the ways of keeping clovers.

At 102 years old, toy inventor Eddy Goldfarb is still going like freshly wound Yakity-Yak Talking Teeth, one of his more than 800 creations. Goldfarb also dreamed up the Bubble Gun, battery-powered Stomper vehicles and KerPlunk, in which hopeful players hold their breath as they strategically remove sticks without disturbing the marbles above.

"Being active and being creative is my secret, and I think it could apply to a lot of people," the Toy Industry Hall of Fame inductee (新成员) says in an interview before singing the praises of his pair of 3D printers. "That's the most wonderful machine because you start with nothing, and it goes layer by layer and builds something."

The Chicago native still creates in his workshop and is the focus of Eddy's World, a documentary that aired on TV. The 28-minute film is directed by his daughter, Lyn Goldfarb.

Goldfarb knew he was going to be a creator at 5 when his father invited an inventor to dinner. "That's when I learned the meaning of the word," he says, "and I knew from then on that I was going to be an inventor." The designer couldn't afford college and joined the Navy during World War II. He thought of the ideas for his first three toys while serving on the USS Batfish.

Goldfarb feels "very lucky" to still be alive at his age. He owes his longevity (长寿) to being creative and his optimistic personality. "During the war I was on the submarine (潜艇) and saw a lot of action, and I think I realized what's important and what's not," he says. "I found out that most things aren't that important. I can overlook a lot."

What's next for the centenarian (百岁老人)? He'd fancy another milestone birthday. "Oh, I'd like to turn 105," he says. "I'm fortunate that I'm healthy. I don't have any of the aches and pains that I heard about all my life. So life is worth living. At 105, we'll start thinking about what we should do."

(1) What does the first paragraph tell us about Goldfarb? A. He is a highly respected toy inventor. B. He is one of the oldest toy inventors. C. He has invented less than 800 toys. D. He is still active in toy invention.
(2) What can we know about Eddy Goldfarb from the text? A. He directed a short film. B. He once dropped out of college. C. He was not famous until he was 102. D. He became the focus of a documentary.
(3) When did Goldfarb get the idea of his first three toys? A. At the age of five. B. While serving in the Navy. C. When dining with an inventor. D. During his stay with his daughter.
(4) Which of the following can best describe Eddy Goldfarb? A. Lucky and wealthy. B. Greative and positive. C. Determined and generous. D. Ambitious and hardworking.

Biking is an amazing family activity, but finding a route that can accommodate a wide-range of ages can be a challenge.

Lee McNeil and his family are crazy about biking. They have seven children, from 4 to 24 years old. When looking for a route, they look for enough protection from traffic, good surface condition, easy access and interesting views.

With that in mind, here are some great routes for biking with your whole family, as are suggested by McNeil.

Iron Horse Trail

This is the McNeil family's favourite ride. The route is 26 miles and goes through the 2. 1mile Snoqualmie Tunnel.

"Beautiful views, the thrill the tunnel, and places to stop and watch the rock climbers make it special," McNeil said. "All our kids have taken their turn at braving the black tunnel bravely for the first time, which we celebrate it at the end of the ride. "

How to get there: If you prefer, check http://bit. ly/Mlt9y4 for more information.

Centennial Trail

The Centennial Trail runs for 23 miles from Snohomish to Bryant. The trail is wide and smooth, and is safe for kids as it is off the roads. A nice stop is Lake Cassidy east of Marysville. A dock on the lake is fun to explore. It also has picnic tables and washrooms for a convenient lunch time stop.

How to get there: The trail can be accessed from a number of trailheads. For a map, go to http://bit. ly/L5qCeY.

Cascade Trail

The Cascade Trail follows an abandoned Burlington Northern railroad grade for 23 miles between Sedro-Woolley and Concrete. Because it's on a railroad grade, the slope is gentle and it makes for an easy family ride.

McNeil said it is a "beautiful ride up the Skagit Valley, with lots of places to watch wildlife along the river. "
