One day, Emma's mother brought Emma to her favorite steak house (牛排餐厅). She was excited all the way when she was sitting in her mother's car. Listening to the wonderful music, she couldn't help but dance in the back seat. Considering her safety, her mother had to stop her and said, "Hey! My sweety! Please be quiet and fasten your seat belt!"

"Okay! Mom," she answered while continuing to roll down the car window. 

"Emma! Don't head out of the window! This is very dangerous! No hands either!" Mom raised his voice as she spoke. 

She said yes and then quietly sat back in place. But there was no previous happiness. She got off in silence and ordered meals silently. Her mother thought that perhaps her tone had just been too urgent, and she tried to make her happy. "Sweetheart, this is a monthly steak appointment. Can you enjoy it with your mom happily?"

Emma nodded silently but continued to stare out of the window. Ten minutes later, Emma looked at the large plate of steak and potatoes as if she had no intention of eating them. Mom sighed and asked, "Isn't it your favorite steak, sweetheart?" "It is, mom," Emma said in a low voice. After listening to her answer, Mom brought the steak and planned to help her daughter cut it into small pieces as before. 

"No, mom, she quickly reached out for the plate. "I can only eat it once a month, right?" "Yes, we made a promise about this," said the mother. 

"Can I just give it to him?" Emma cautiously asked, and her-eyes filled with expectations. Following the direction of her finger, there was a homeless man in tattered (破烂的) clothes. And she realized that the man was the figure that flashed by the roadside when her daughter leaned out of the window in the car. 

"Of course, you can," her mother agreed.

The Lost Dog

One summer day, I went out my back door and found a small dog sitting in the grass. The dog stood up and wagged (摇) his tail when he saw me. I touched his short brown-and-white coat and checked him for a collar or ID tag (项圈或身份牌). He had neither. I lived in a small town. I knew all the dogs in the neighborhood, but I'd never seen him before. I told him to sit. To my surprise, he sat at once. "Stay," I said, as I made my way into the storeroom where we kept the dry dog food for our dogs. When I returned, he was sitting in the exact place where I had left him. "Wow! You sure are trained," I said. I set out some water and food, and the dog started eating.

I left him in the yard and went inside to read through the newspaper's "Lost and Found" column (专栏). Unluckily, nobody had reported a missing brown-and-white dog. An hour later, my brother came home and asked why there was a strange dog in the yard. "I don't know where he came from," I said. "But he is owned by someone. Maybe he's just lost and will find his way home." Later that afternoon, my brother and I went outside and found the dog walking by the back door. We played with him for a while and found that the dog knew tricks. He could sit, stay, roll over, and lie down according to instructions. He also loved jumping to catch a tennis ball in mid-air. When my parents came home, we showed them the dog and all his tricks. My parents were shocked by his skills as much as we were. None of us had ever seen a dog so well-trained before. The dog got along well with our dogs, and we gave him a comfortable place to sleep in the storeroom.

The next day, I checked the "Lost and Found" column again, also with no result. Then, I called the newspaper and ran a "Found" advertisement describing our new friend.

I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. "Mama, want to play?" "Not today, baby." I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but the future seemed so hopeless.

Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. "Bird!" he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree (橡胶树). It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I'd never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying sticks. "Look Matthew," I said, pointing to the tree. "They're going to make a nest." The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.

Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door (滑动玻璃门), talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was influential. As much as I was sad, I couldn't help but look forward to the doves' visits too.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs (细枝) break apart.

I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they started again, as if nothing had happened.

Now comes the worst part: Mr. Groll. As usual, friendly Chó thumps her tail. But Chó is just a dog; how can she know that this neighbor does not like me at all?

"Hello, Mr. Groll." I greeted him as I did every morning. And like every other morning, he did not answer me. But I knew he was there, watching, behind his fence. He always sounds out of breath, and the creaky gate swings nervously in his hand. Maybe he's afraid of me because I'm blind. Disabilities do scare grown-ups sometimes. Then I remembered: the other day I heard him playing checkers with my friend Jimmy, who's in a wheelchair.

Chó and I marched on, and my thoughts kept step. "Why did Mr. Groll ignore me?" It's a mystery to me.

Papa has told me that some folks do not like people from faraway places. Does this solve the mystery? Maybe Mr. Groll does not like Vietnamese neighbors. No, that can't be it. Every Saturday Mr. Groll and my big brother, Lien, help each other with yard work. They are friends. Well, then, maybe he doesn't like me because I'm a girl. The sidewalk hummed(发出嗡嗡声) beneath my feet. A skateboard zoomed by. "Hello, Mai and Choó" my friend Jana yelled. "Hi, Mr. Groll." I waited. If Mr. Groll ignored Jana, then the mystery was solved. But his voice called out, "Hello, Jana!"
