There is an English saying,"Laughter is the best medicine. " Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people's health.

Tests were carried out to studythe effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctorschecked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In oneexperiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened todifferent radio programmes. The group that tolerated (忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

(1) What are the two experiments carried out by doctors?
(2) What was found in the first experiment?
(3) In the second experiment, which group tolerated the pain for the longest time?
(4) Why can laughter reduce pain?
(5) Making patients smile won't have beneficial effects on patients, will it?

3.  D. Answer the questions

One of the things that make humans different from animals is the ability to speak. But what if animals could develop that ability? A few years ago an animal did speak. His name was Noc and he was a dolphin in an American research center. Noc was able to repeat words and sentences spoken by trainers. Noc died shortly after, but researchers think that someday dolphins may be able to speak a human language.

So, if animals could talk, what do you think they would say to us? I think the first thing they would say is: "Please treat us better. " Humans use animals for food and other commercial products. We use them for entertainment, and as pets. But we treat them as objects rather than as living, feeling, thinking creatures. And sometimes we treat them very badly.

During the National Day holiday, two camels in Dunhuang, Gansu province, were ridden to death. Tourists had climbed on the camels' backs from dawn to dusk until, hungry, thirsty and tired, the animals collapsed and died. That same week people lined up in a village near Nanjing to drink deer blood. They thought that deer blood drunk from freshly cut antlers would improve their health. They did not think of the pain and the terror felt by the deer.

Someday another Noc will appear and start to talk to humans. He will tell us that humans and animals are not really that different. We both have thoughts and feelings and we share the same earth. This Noc will say, "You are the smartest of all the animals, so can you please find it in your heart to treat us better?"

(1) What is one of the things make humans different from animals?
(2) What could Noc do?
(3) Humans use animals for food and other commercial products, don't they?
(4) When did two camels die in Dunhuang?
(5) Why did two camels die?
(6) What can we learn from the passage?
