1.  D. Answer the questions

One of the things that make humans different from animals is the ability to speak. But what if animals could develop that ability? A few years ago an animal did speak. His name was Noc and he was a dolphin in an American research center. Noc was able to repeat words and sentences spoken by trainers. Noc died shortly after, but researchers think that someday dolphins may be able to speak a human language.

So, if animals could talk, what do you think they would say to us? I think the first thing they would say is: "Please treat us better. " Humans use animals for food and other commercial products. We use them for entertainment, and as pets. But we treat them as objects rather than as living, feeling, thinking creatures. And sometimes we treat them very badly.

During the National Day holiday, two camels in Dunhuang, Gansu province, were ridden to death. Tourists had climbed on the camels' backs from dawn to dusk until, hungry, thirsty and tired, the animals collapsed and died. That same week people lined up in a village near Nanjing to drink deer blood. They thought that deer blood drunk from freshly cut antlers would improve their health. They did not think of the pain and the terror felt by the deer.

Someday another Noc will appear and start to talk to humans. He will tell us that humans and animals are not really that different. We both have thoughts and feelings and we share the same earth. This Noc will say, "You are the smartest of all the animals, so can you please find it in your heart to treat us better?"

3. Read the passage below and answer the following questions(根据文章内容回答下列问题)

Students will take robot to competition (比赛)

John and Jenny from Hills High School are building a robot. They are part of the school's robotics team and they are going to take part in the National Robotics Competition. The competition is for high school students aged 14 to 17 from across the country.

"We have six weeks to build a robot that will play a game of basketball with other robots," says Jenny. "Our robot has to be able to move around a basketball court (场地) and throw a ball into a hoop."

"There are eight of us in our team and we've worked on this for three weeks," says John. "We are spending hours and hours working on our robot, both during school hours and after school. We have to design, build and program it so that we can control it during the competition."

Science teacher Ms Singer is helping the students and says that preparing for the competition is a great experience for them. "They are developing skills in robotics, coding and mechanical engineering. They are also learning how to plan a project and learning about teamwork."

In three weeks' time, the students will take their robot to the City Exhibition Centre. It will join robots built by other schools in a friendly game of robot "basketball". Students will control the robot beside the court. Engineers will be at the competition to given comments to the students and give talks about robotics.

"I love this." says John. "I like working with the others in the team to solve problems. When I leave school, I want to study software engineering, so this really is a great experience for me."

(1) What is the oldest age limit for participants in the competition?

(2) How many weeks do they have to prepare for the competition?

(3) How do the students make the robot?

(4) What skills are the students developing through preparing for the competition?

(5) What is John's ambition after leaving school?
