It was already hot and wet on a July morning. I enjoyed a couple of hours of peace and quiet before my teenagers awoke. With a second cup of coffee steaming in front of me, I planned my day: take out some cash at the bank, and maybe go to the mall to shop for a new pair of sneakers.

Sometime around noon I grabbed my purse, said goodbye to the kids and headed for my car. The bank was two miles from the house. I stopped my car in front of the ATM machine, and jumped out of the car with the engine running and the air conditioner on.

Trade completed, I came back to the car and pulled on the door handle. If ever I had an uh-oh worst moment, it was then. The door was locked.

The sun was beating down on me while I stood frustrated, wondering what to do. I didn't enjoy the thought of a two-mile hike back to the house to get the spare set of keys.

I entered the bank and took a deep breath of cool air before approaching a teller window. The young woman who greeted me listened sympathetically (同情地)as I told her my problem. When I asked if I could make a call, she cheerfully responded by showing me a telephone.

"Hello, Fawn." I said when my daughter answered.  "I locked my keys in the car at the bank, and the engine is running. Can you go next door and ask Eddie if he would bring me the spare set, please?"

Fawn came back on the line a few minutes later. The news wasn't good—Eddie was out. I hung up and told my dilemma to the teller.

"You're Fawn's mother?," she asked, sounding a bit apologetic for listening in on my conversation.

"Yes. I am."

Her face lit up. "I'm Carmen. Fawn and I often work together in the church nursery. She's a wonderful person. I just love her a lot. You must be a great mom."

Ada looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with a furious frown on her face. "Mom, they're all little kids! I'm 15 already! This is ridiculous!"

"I know, Ada," replied her mother, "but you're a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!"

Ada had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather's farm, she hadn't had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Ada had been to was the inflatable(充气的)alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Ada was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Ada faced a new challenge—school field trips to the local pool.

The first day that Ada went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Ada confidently slipped into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Ada let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Ada threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed the ledge (池壁), out of breath. "I really can't swim! Everyone's going to laugh at me!" she thought to herself in a panic.

On the next field trip to the pool, Ada sat on the side on a bench, paralyzed with fear. She huddled with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Ada was upset. "Honey, I've signed you up for Angela's swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you'll learn how to swim just like everyone else," she assured Ada, showing photos of Bella with her prize-winning students. Ada felt doubtful that lessons would help, but she had to overcome her fear.

After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get-a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area; western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen—teaching English.

School started, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class—seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic(理想主义的) teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.

In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said. the bud behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but the text obviously ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my task master known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.

My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn't happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I had to face him.

One Saturday afternoon, I was watching TV in the living room with my grandpa when a blinding flash of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a deafening sound, and the pictures on TV disappeared with that sound. Before I realized what had happened, a gray-white shadow rushed in through the open window and flew over my head. Bang! It hit the wall and slid off to the floor. Shaking with fear, I approached it cautiously and saw that it was a pigeon(鸽子). It looked at me in fear, trying to open its wings and struggling its feet, but apparently powerless.

So I called my grandpa and immediately set out to give it a helping hand. Taking it in my hands, I felt a few drops of warmth on my hands. It was blood! I gently spread its wings and there were a few red feathers inside. "Don't worry. We'll get it out alive," Grandpa said to me. Then he got the first-aid kit. With some cotton, we dried the blood, cleaned the wound and then put it under a hairdryer to dry. All went smoothly, for the pigeon had no strength left to resist. There happened to be an empty birdcage at home, so I put it in gently and added a little water and some grains.

For the next few days, the moment I got home from school, I would run to feed the pigeon. And Grandpa helped a lot, tidying up the cage daily. Little by little, its strength returned. One evening, I fed it with the biscuit I was eating. It enjoyed it! One week later, its wound almost healed(痊愈); its feathers grew and it became brave. Whenever I sat at the table eating biscuits, it looked up at me, cooing(咕咕地叫) constantly. To my joy, I could also reach into the cage to touch it. When I gently fingered its head, it playfully pecked(啄) at me. Finally it completely recovered. But every time I was with it, it seemed restless in the cage. To make it happy and pretty, I tied an orange string(线) around its leg.
