Jon's Pajama Problem

Oh no, he had done it again. He'd forgotten something important. Last year on their family trip to his uncle's cottage for Christmas, he had forgotten the bag with the toiletries (洗漱用品) in it. Neither he nor his brother had toothbrushes or toothpaste or shampoo. He'd had to borrow from his cousins who were not thrilled to share, and Jon was not too thrilled that his hair smelled like strawberries all week.

The year before, Jon had left the marshmallows and graham crackers at home, so they had no mores for the evening fire and annual reading of "The Night Before Christmas". They had to nibble on (小口咬) some stale (不新鲜的) crackers instead. His cousins still teased him about that.

And now, Jon couldn't believe he had forgotten to pack his pajamas. At home, that wouldn't really be a problem: he had extra pajamas. But at the cottage, there were photographs dating back for years and years of Jon's family on Christmas morning in front of the tree in their pajamas. Jon was feeling awful. He would be the first one to break the family tradition ever. Would he ruin Christmas for everyone? What could he do?

He didn't want to tell his parents. He went looking around the cottage, and found an old T- shirt. That could work. He tried putting it on, but it was too small. He tried to stretch it, but it must have been washed 100 times, and it ripped when he pulled on it.

At this point, Jon was getting desperate. He snuck into his brother's luggage, trying to find some spare pajamas, only to find himself in trouble when his older brother caught him and yelled. His brother hated it when Jon messed with his stuff.

As a country music song goes, "She's a wild one with an angel's face. " That is my younger sister, Lulu. When I think of her, I think of trying to tame a wild horse.

It is hard to find words to describe my relationship with Lulu. "All-out nuclear warfare" could not interpret it quite exactly. The irony is that we are very much alike: we share the hot-tempered and fast-forgiving personality.

Speaking of personalities, the Chinese Zodiac ( 属相) describes Lulu and me perfectly.

People born in the Pig Year are "stubborn" and "tough" and often "fly into anger," although they

"never harbour a grudge (记仇)" as they are honest and warm-hearted. That is Lulu and I exactly, with an age gap of twelve years.

I had my first face-off with Lulu when she was about five. It was a freezing winter afternoon in New Haven, Connecticut. Mum and Dad were at work. Babysitting Lulu at home, I decided that it would be the perfect time to introduce Lulu to the piano as I was in the learning process myself. Excited about working together — with her brown curls, round eyes, and China doll face, Lulu was desperately cute – I put her on the piano bench, on top of some comfortable pillows. I then demonstrated how to play a single note with a single finger, and asked her to do the same. A small request, but Lulu refused, preferring instead to smash at many notes at the same time with two open palms. When I asked her to stop, she smashed harder and faster. When I tried to pull her away from the piano, she began yelling, crying, and kicking angrily.

Fifteen minutes later, she was still yelling, crying, and kicking, and I had had it! Avoiding her blows, I dragged the screaming demon (恶魔) to our back door, and threw it open. The wind chill was six degrees below zero, and my own face hurt from just a few seconds' exposure to the icy air.

I wish my mother had a ring like those the ladies wear at the hotel", said Hiram Green to himself one day. Hiram was the son of a fisherman, but the fisherman had died when Hiram was a little boy. Hiram's mother took on sewing work to earn money to support herself and her son. He helped her when he could out of school hours, and during vacation time. He had two uncles who had taught him how to catch shrimps (虾). With the money he earned by selling them, he could buy things for his own use or pleasure. He had a "bank" almost full of what he called his "shrimp money."

The sight of the flashing diamonds on the hands of some of the summer visitors at the fishing village in which he lived had added a new article to the list of beautiful things his mother would own someday. He had heard that just one single diamond was sometimes worth five hundred dollars or more. This had discouraged him very much.

But one day, he happened to pass a shop in the neighboring town and saw a number of diamond rings displayed in the window. He stopped fascinated (被吸引住的), and pressed his face against the glass eagerly to see if any prices were marked upon them. Imagine his surprise when he saw upon the largest one8 - a tag (标签)marked $4. 75. He looked again to see if he had made a mistake. Perhaps it was $475. But no, he knew enough about figures to see that he was right the first time.

He went home as fast as he could, and ran up into his bedroom. Then, he opened his "bank" and counted its contents. "Three dollars and twenty-two cents!" he cried. "I'll have that ring before another week. " Hiram worked early and late for the next few days. He caught more shrimps than he had ever caught in the same length of time, and sold them readily.

Last night, my partner John and I went to the levees (堤岸) where I was relearning how to run. He supported on his bike and I went as fast or as slow as my old legs wanted to take me. Ahead of us was a very old man with a plastic bag who seemed to be unable to walk a straight line. John said, "You keep running, and I will check on him."

John was holding his hand. John told the man, "We are going to come back this way. If you are still here, we will check on you." The man said he was fine but he was going to stay down for a bit. He was on the ground at the bottom of the levee and off a walkway that backed up into other people's homes. We ran on for 10-15 minutes or so and turned around.

John rode ahead to see if he was still there. When I got to the spot, there was John and the man. The man didn't look fine — he was stumbling (蹒跚而行) around and seemed lost.

The man in the meantime tried to climb up the levee and fell again and as he sat there, I walked down. I said, "Hi, my name is Mia, what's your name?" He laughed and looked at me. I said light-heartedly, "I am relearning how to run. I didn't realize it was so difficult." He said, "Oh my son and I run too — yeah it's not always easy."

It was starting to get dark. Turns out the man's name was John also. I said, "Shall we walk together, John?" He said, "Okay." He didn't want me to grab his hand or arm to help him, so I said, "I'll just stand by you if that is okay." "That's okay," he said.

We walked down the levee together with John riding behind. Through our walk he swerved (急转弯) from either side of the levee — I stayed calm and moved to either side casually trying not to look like I was blocking.
