Mary was the only child of her parents. One day, she and her mother burst into a great quarrel. Mary rushed out of the house with anger. Walking up and down the street for a long time, she felt tired and hungry. There happened to be a middle-aged man selling noodles at a stand beside her. But she had to sigh and leave because of no money.

The man saw Mary and asked, "Hi, girl, would you like some noodles?"

"Yes, but no…I don't have any money on me," Mary answered.

"Then it will be my treat this time," invited the seller.

The seller handed her a bowl of inviting noodles. Mary couldn't wait to eat up all the yummy food... then, tears rolled down her face slowly.

"What's wrong?" asked the seller considerately.

"Nothing," Mary answered. "You are so kind!" Mary thanked the seller again and again when she cleaned her face. "Even a person who I came across in the street would care about me, while my mom just criticized me and drove me out of the house. I can't understand why she is so mean and cruel to me!"

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times that she has cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?"

Mary was lost in deep thought; mom's smiling face and rough hands emerged in her mind.

"Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mom for what she has done for me."

When Mary returned home, she decided to say sorry to her mom for her rude behavior.

A few years ago I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.

On one of my trips, I came to the airport to take a bus to downtown, as usual. It was the same routine: get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back…That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally the bus came.

Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, "hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?"

I remember thinking to myself ﹣ this must be one of those typical people who is young and naive and just thinks everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I replied, "Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?" "No, I'm not here for vacation, and I don't have parents," He shook his head, "I'm here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I'm on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago. "

Sam Watts was a 37-year-old fisherman living and working in Canada. One day, Sam planned to head out into the Pacific at 9 am and work straight through until 5pm the next day. Joining Sam would be his crewman, 24-year-old Tom Buck.

Although Sam had been warned that a storm was coming, there was little that would keep him from going. As he sailed through the waves some 120 kilometers from land, Sam let out his three-kilometer-long fishing line. The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the men far offshore. That changed around 1 am. Waves rocked the small boat, which began to turn sideways like an amusement park ride. "Get us out of here! "Tom screamed to Sam. "Let's go back! "

With the winds and waves kicking up, the boat began to fill with water. Sam and Tom tried to pull in the fishing line together, but the high waves filled the boat with water, forcing Sam to make a hard decision. He cut the line, losing thousands of dollars' worth of equipment and fish in the sea. He then pointed the boat toward a port five hours away. Sam then called his boss, William Fox, to report his position.

With dawn coming, Sam spotted the rise of the mountains on the horizon. He was figuring out a route through the dangerous waters when suddenly the motor stopped. "I couldn't believe it, "Sam said. "We were 24 kilometers off the coast, and the motor died. "High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides. "William, William! "Sam yelled into the radio. "If you're coming to get me, come now! "

"We're coming! " William shouted back.

Shortly after, the radio died and the wind continued to blow straight offshore, driving the men farther out to sea.

The next morning, Sam spotted a fishing boat in the distance.

A vacation with my mother

I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother—loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.

My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd ever see them again?  Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.

David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: "You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I'll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go. " I had terrible pictures in my mind: "Honey, where are the kids? " "What? ! Oh, Gosh. 。I thought they were being awfully quiet. " We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.

On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there?  David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorsteps, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.
