You always found me on a basketball court or with a ball in my hand. It taught me many things about life. It also taught me that success requires hard work.

I played the sport up until one day my plans were cut short. I had my knee broken unfortunately, terminating my career as a player. Giving up basketball was one of the hardest things I've done in my life.

I did not want to lose that part of my life forever. I decided to realize my dream of basketball from a different angle; I signed up to coach a seventh grade basketball team. I'm not going to lie, at first I was a bit apprehensive. After all, I was only a senior girl in high school coaching a seventh grade basketball team.

My basketball team consisted of seven seventh grade girls and we practiced twice a week for one hour. It was not a lot of time, which often made it difficult to make progress in skill development. However, my skills were able to develop, but not in basketball. As a coach, I am supposed to be the one teaching them. But the girls that I coached did not realize that while they were learning, so was I. My players taught me many things like patience and confidence, and above all, a better understanding of myself as a person. They taught me how to be a good role model, and how to hold myself accountable for my choices. They taught me how to heighten my love for the game, and heighten my love for seven girls I didn't know I could grow so close to. Thank you for helping me grow as an individual and as a coach.

Matt Doogue, a 34-year-old nature photographer, had been suffering from depression when he first found his passion for taking pictures of insects and his work is now featured in National Geographic. He says that he tried to take his own life nine years ago after hitting rock bottom. "In the beginning, I was so paranoid(多疑的) and angry that I couldn't leave the house," says Doogue. "When I attempted to end my life, I knew I needed to see someone. I went to the doctors and got treatment, but I knew that I needed something more and that's when I started photography."

Now a dad of two, Doogue found that looking at insects through a camera helped him in ways he could never have imagined and it proved to be the lifeline he needed. It had a calming effect that helped him to disconnect from stress; and his astonishing images, showing insects and spiders in amazing detail against brightly colored backgrounds, caught the eye of publishers at National Geographic. "I ended up as one of their featured photo graphers," recalled Doogue. "It was the peak of my career. It was incredible."

Originally from Salford, Greater Manchester, he now lives in Armadale, West Lothian, Scotland. Though he fears that Scotland is in the middle of an epidemic(流行病) of male suicide, he believes that sharing his love of nature photography can help others to cope with their mental health issues as well. "I think the problem is this man-up approach; the idea that men need to be strong puts so much pressure on young males to be fine all the time," says Doogue. "This is why I try and be so open about my own experience. Whenever I am out with my camera, I don't think about my other worries. It is just me and the environment around me. You can lose yourself in a spider making its web."

(1) What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us about Doogue? A. How Doogue became depressed. B. Why Doogue took up photography. C. Why Doogue wanted to end his life. D. When Doogue turned photographer.
(2) How did photography benefit Doogue? A. It helped him to escape from pressure. B. It provided him with life-saving skills. C. It gave him a new way to express himself. D. It offered him an opportunity to explore nature.
(3) What causes Scottish men to develop mental health problems? A. The way men employ to solve problems. B. The lack of love for men's life and work. C. The belief that men are expected to be strong. D. The worry that men get separated from people.
(4) What is the main purpose of the author in writing the text? A. To introduce Doogue's fighting depression. B. To advise the readers to get close to nature. C. To show the benefits of nature photography. D. To warn the seriousness of mental problems.

Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s. In each of these stories I see elements of my own story, that of leaving my birthplace and family and creating a new life in a different culture and in a different language.

The child of Italian immigrants and an award-winning scholar of Italian literature, in the book My Two Italies Joseph Luzzi struggled to create or find his own identity from an early age. Even more problematic for him was "which" Italy to "choose," the one he inherited(继承) from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel, or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture.

The choice becomes even sadder as in his professional life he becomes a scholar of Italian literature and culture. He describes episodes of his youth that show the clash between the first and the second generation immigrants that are both funny and tragicomic(悲喜剧式的). These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph's desire to "fit in" the American culture. Joseph's visits to Italy as a student and then as a scholar deepen the divide between his two Italies and highlight his quest for identity.

The author's personal changes are full of quotes and comments on the cultural and political landscape of Italy. I find that his insights on contemporary Italian cultural and political phenomena are particularly interesting. In this book, Joseph touches or comments in depth about several issues concerning Italian life, such as the relationship between dialects(方言) and the official "Italian" language, and the Southern "question" or the uneasy interaction between Northern and Southern Italians.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is personal, moving, educational and entertaining. I hope you will enioy it too!

(2) Which of the following is more difficult for Joseph to deal with? A. Choosing right Italian identity. B. Inheriting his parents' wealth. C. Bridging the generation gap. D. Becoming a literary scholar.
(3) What does the underlined word "clash" mean in paragraph 3? A. Cooperation. B. Distance. C. Similarity. D. Conflict.
(4) What is the text? A. A news report. B. A book review. C. A children's story. D. A diary entry.
