Family dynamics in the animal kingdom are as different as the animals themselves. In the animal world, there are advantages to be gained from being part of an extended family.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are the world's largest living primates. These creatures are peace-loving and may live together for a lifetime. The dominant male has many wives who may stay with him for most of their lives, which can cause everyday conflicts. It is the male who settles the conflicts by a warning stare or hitting the back of the offenders' heads.

Elephants

Females stick together in the elephant world, living in herds under a stateswoman. The experience and knowledge of this elder one, who may be 60-years-old, are of great benefit. She will remember, for example,the location of water holes and seasonal food supplies. In times of danger, the group bunches around the young and it is the stateswoman who decides whether to flee or confront the threat.

Lions

Lions are the only cats to live in a large family group guarded by a pair of powerful males. Family life is relatively harmonious and baby lions may be fed by any mother with milk, so orphaned babies do not starve. Males live in the wilderness for some years before seeking their own pride by challenging resident males in a bloody battle. The male lion protects his pride from other males and enemies.

Ostriches (鸵鸟)

Ostriches travel in bands of 10-50 individuals, the most remarkable birds being the eight-foot-tall males. The largest birds in the world, ostriches cannot fly, but run fast. The wives of the male ostrich all put their eggs in the same nest. A primary female will then join the male to hatch (孵化) the eggs and she will push away other eggs on the outside to ensure her own are in the middle.

(1) How is an elephant herd different from other three animal groups? A. The leader should be the oldest and experienced. B. The number of the animals in a herd must be large. C. An experienced female elephant dominates the herd. D. They will protect their young when they are in danger.
(2) Which of the following statement is correct? A. Baby lions often go hungry as they can't hunt. B. A female and a male ostriches hatch eggs jointly. C. Elephants remember every place they have been to. D. The female chimpanzee leader settles daily conflicts.
(3) Where is this text probably taken from? A. A text book. B. A science fiction. C. A course plan. D. A wildlife journal.

Every morning on the island of Oahu, students at Pu' öhala Elementary gather on a field as towering mountains watch them from the mist. Their day starts with songs in ‘ölelo Hawai'i, the islands' native language, restating values of respect and justice that their teachers hope will guide them through their education, and throughout their lives.

Like most kids their age, they're not concerned about the significance of the language they're learning. Still, they have a weighty responsibility: to receive the torch (火炬) and ensure the security of ‘ölelo Hawai' i for future generations.

It was only 50 years ago that the language was on the edge of extinction. Though the situation is much improved, in many ways ‘ölelo Hawai' i is still on life support. Teachers say there's a huge enthusiasm for school kids to learn the language, but as they grow up, they're encouraged to focus on "more useful" subjects and use English, which are believed to assist them in achieving success in their work. In 2016, there were 18, 610 Hawaiian speakers on the islands.

"One hundred thousand is the approximate number of speakers needed to consider the language safe, " says Solomon, professor of Hawaiian language at University of Hawai'i at Manoa. "The idea is that there are enough people passing it on to the next generation, socializing their children to use the language in all domains of life, to express all thoughts and needs and desires. "

Fortunately, the kids of Pu' öhala Elementary will take the responsibility to continue the work of the current young adults defending the language, expanding access to ‘ölelo Hawai'i in part through TikTok and Instagram, and making the language a practical skill in adulthood. These youth, along with those committed to recovering the language from previous generations, share their hopes for the better.

(1) What are the students at Pu' öhala Elementary expected to do? A. To figure out the value of life. B. To go out of the island of Oahu. C. To pass their native language down. D. To draw people's attention to folk songs.
(2) What makes the students abandon ‘ölelo Hawai'i? A. Career development. B. The improved situation. C. Lack of enthusiasm. D. Little educational support.
(3) What is the current situation of ‘ölelo Hawai'i according to professor Solomon? A. It is used in all walks of life. B. It is considered a safe language. C. It demands more speakers to be safe. D. It has one hundred thousand speakers.
(4) What is the author's attitude towards the future of ‘ölelo Hawai'i? A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Unclear. D. Reserved.

Dad's comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say, "Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?"

I was more than happy to do it. At age five this mundane task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I'd done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me and place the comb on top of his wallet.

About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. He didn't come home as much as he used to – just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it was always late and I'd already be in bed. I started to get mad. I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.

Today, I'm no longer a kid. I've graduated from college and got a job. Dad's business has got back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me persisted.

Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said, "Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb?" I looked at him a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink.

I passed the clean comb back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad has aged. He has wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiles, yet his smile is still as heartwarming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Dad carefully placed his comb on top of his wallet.

After so many years, he still organizes his personal items in the same meticulous way. I guess some things never change. And for that, I'm glad.

(1) What caused the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me? A. Generation gap. B. Dad's failure in business. C. My ignorance of Dad. D. Dad's absence from the family.
(2) Which of the following can best describe Dad? A. Gentle but strict. B. Hardworking and caring. C. Cautious and realistic. D. Demanding but patient.
(3) Why did Dad ask his daughter to clean his comb before her birthday? A. To give her a lesson. B. To follow his old habit. C. To fix their relationship. D. To praise her helpfulness.
(4) Which saying concludes the text best? A. Yesterday once more. B. Let bygones be bygones. C. Some things never change. D. Like father, like daughter.
