It's an attractive idea: by playing online problem-solving, matching and other games for a few minutes a day, people can improve such mental abilities as reasoning, language skills and memory. But whether these games deliver on those promises is up for debate.

Now, in perhaps the biggest real-world test of these programs, Stojanoski, a cognitive (认知的) neuroscientist at Western University in Ontario, and colleagues tested more than 1,000 people who regularly use brain trainers against around 7,500 people who don't do the mini brain workouts.

The researchers involved 8,563 volunteers globally. Participants filled out an online questionnaire about their training habits, opinions about training benefits and which, if any, program they used. Some 1,009 participants reported using brain training programs for about eight months, on average, though the time length ranged from two weeks to more than five years. Next, the volunteers completed 12 cognitive tests assessing memory, reasoning and language skills. They faced memory exercises, spatial reasoning tasks such as mentally rotating objects and pattern-finding puzzles, and strategy challenges.

When researchers looked at the results, they saw that brain trainers on average had no mental ascendancy over the other group in memory, language skills and reasoning. Even among those who had used training programs for at least 18 months, brain training didn't increase thinking abilities above the level of people who didn't use the programs.

"No matter how we sliced the data, we were unable to find any evidence that brain training was associated with cognitive abilities," says Stojanoski, "brain training may be beneficial in specific situations, but part of our goal was to look at brain training in the real world."

That real world may be the best brain trainer, says Elizabeth Stine, a cognitive aging scientist at the University of Illinois. While it's possible to improve mental abilities, she advocates practicing those skills in different real-life situations. "That's a much better use of one's time than sitting at a computer and doing little tasks."

(1) What's the purpose of the research? A. To test participants' mental ability in the real world. B. To discover new ways to improve people's intelligence. C. To find out whether brain trainers are beneficial to users. D. To compare the effects of two types of brain training games.
(2) What scientific methods were applied to the research? A. Survey and comparison. B. Experiment and analysis. C. Interview and examination. D. Observation and recording.
(3) What does the underlined word "ascendancy" in paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Problem. B. Advantage. C. Ability. D. Benefit.
(4) Which can be the best title for this passage? A. Smart Games: Not Useful in Reality B. Brain Training: Better than Expected C. A Research: the Biggest Real-world Test D. An Attractive Idea: Getting Smart via Games

There's no shortage of health food trends on TikTok, but which ones are actually sensible? And should you skip any of them altogether? We asked registered dietitian Vanessa Rissetto, and here's what you need to know.

Emily Mariko's Salmon Bowl

Made with rice, baked salmon, soy sauce and spicy mayo—and to be clear, there are a lot of different variations of it online—this passes Rissetto's test because it's healthy, fast, easy and has good flavor.

Rissetto says that while she would recommend this recipe, she would also suggest changing the white rice for brown rice for increased nutrients and more fiber.

Healthy Cookie Dough

Cookie dough that's healthy? This is too good to be true, right? The answer is probably yes.

Rissctto says that while this may be healthy, it probably doesn't taste good.

"I'm certain this tastes like cardboard, "she said."If you don't care about taste—then this is for you. "

Lettuce Water For Sleep

While harmless, the TikTok trend of pouring boiling water over romaine lettuce leaves to make

"lettuce water" for better sleep probably won't cure your sleep disorder—and it probably doesn't taste great, either.

"This is not a thing. There's no evidence to prove it, "Rissetto said. "Instead, steep a banana peel in boiling water to help aid with sleep. "

Nature's Cereal

As Rissetto points out, it's basically a fruit smoothie bowl.

"I am all for having berries and coconut water, "she said." Nutrition-wise, this has lots of vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. It's basically a fruit salad that would be super refreshing on a hot day or post-workout"

(1) What is special about Emily Mariko's salmon bowl? A. It doesn't taste great. B. It is good for health. C. Its recipe is not fixed. D. It uses two kinds of rice.
(2) Which recipe doesn't Rissetto recommend? A. Emily Mariko's salmon bowl. B. Healthy cookie dough. C. Lettuce water for sleep. D. Nature's cereal.
(3) Which food suits you best after playing a football match? A. Emily Mariko's salmon bowl B. Healthy cookie dough. C. Lettuce water for sleep. D. Nature's cereal.

Standing out from the crowd isn't always a good thing.

Birds with uncommon traits like big beaks(喙), long tails and extended wings are more likely to be threatened and face extinction, new research finds.

"We are fascinated by the diversity of the planet's bird species. At the same time, we are deeply concerned about the threats these birds face," lead author Jarome Ali, a PhD candidate at Princeton University, says. Ali completed the research at Imperial College London.

For their work, researchers analyzed measurement data collected from 9, 943 bird species, which are about 99% of all living bird species. The information came from both living birds as well as museum specimens(标本). The measurements included beak size and shape, as well as the length of legs, tails and wings. Researchers combined the information on physical traits with the birds' risk of extinction. Next, they ran simulations(模拟) about what would occur if the most threatened birds were to become extinct.

"All our simulations showed that extinction has worse effects on the diversity of bird shapes than we expected. This is deeply concerning, but not shocking given that we first found that threatened birds were more unique than non-threatened birds," Ali says.

The researchers weren't sure what could explain the link between unusual birds and their extinction risk. "Unique birds are likely to play specialized roles in the ecosystem. One possible explanation is that as habitats come under threat, these specialized roles are likely to be the first to be targeted," Ali says. "For example, if you were a hummingbird and specialized to feed on a small subset of plants, then damage to your habitat would be worse than if you were a less unique bird that eats a whole range of foods."

"The loss of these rare birds has an impact on the environment because their role in the ecosystem is lost," Ali says. "Our findings imply that we cannot simply hope that non-threatened species will come in and fill the role of the threatened species."

(1) What did the researchers do for the study? A. They only focused on living bird species. B. They analyzed data on most bird species. C. They saved a number of threatened birds. D. They made a map of all the extinct birds.
(2) What is Jarome Ali's feeling after knowing the finding of the simulations? A. Relief. B. Disappointment. C. Surprise. D. Concern.
(3) What can we learn from Jarome Ali's words in the last paragraph? A. Rare threatened bird species' role is unique. B. The loss of rare birds is actually unavoidable. C. Non-threatened species will take the leading role. D. The impact of bird loss can be easily controlled.
(4) What is the main idea of the text? A. Rare birds are the future of the ecosystem. B. Birds with rare features have lost their place. C. The current ecosystem is going unbalanced. D. Unusual birds are more likely to go extinct.

Imagine someone who has spent the majority of their life sitting with a sign on the side of the road and that very person giving someone their last 20 dollars. That's exactly what Marine Corps veteran (退伍军人) Johnny Bobbitt, 34, did in October in Philadelphia.

Bobbitt served in the U. S. Marine Corps and worked as a paramedic (医务辅助人员) in Vance County, N. C. before he became homeless. Nobody knew how he got to where he was because he was discreet about that.

One night in October, Bobbitt was sitting roadside with a sign in Philadelphia as usual, when Kate McClure of Florence Township, N. J. was driving home down Interstate 95 and ran out of gas. Scared and nervous, she got out of the car to head to the nearest gas station. As McClure was heading to the nearest gas station, she ran into Bobbitt and he told her to get back in the vehicle and lock the door. Minutes later, he appeared with a red gas can. He'd used his last $20 to buy her gas.

After that unexpected meeting, McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D'Amico, who both live in New Jersey, visited Bobbitt several times to deliver gift cards, cash, snacks and toiletries. They then decided to create a fund raising page so he wouldn't have to spend the holidays sleeping on the street.

McClure started the GoFundMe page on November 10. With the page, the couple hoped to raise $10,000, enough money for his rent, a reliable vehicle and up to six months' expenses. Bobbitt's story ran in a local paper. By November 15,more than 10,000 local people had made donations through the GoFundMe page and more than $300,000 had been raised.

On Thanksgiving, Bobbitt was resting in a hotel, his feet up on the bed, drawing up a grand plan for his new life, thanks to several thousand dollars raised to repay him for a good deed.

(1) What does the underlined word "discreet" in paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Guilty. D. Optimistic.
(2) McClure met Bobbitt when she      . A. couldn't find a gas station B. got to the way home C. couldn't unlock her car D. was in search of gas
(3) It can be known from the text that        . A. Bobbitt's story obtained wide attention B. Bobbitt became world-famous overnight C. the GoFundMe page collected over $400,000 for Bobbitt D. the GoFundMe page was started to help people like Bobbitt
