A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the baii cost?

If you answered 10 cents, you're not alone— most people give the same answer (the correct answer is 5 cents). It's an example of how we often rely on intuitive (直觉的) responses—answers we feel are true. People give answers that "pop into their mind," says Steven Sloman. We don't spend much time "reflecting and checking whether the answer is right or wrong.

The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in fake news. It is part of human nature to believe, says Sloman. But "the trick with fake news is to know to verify"— in other words, to stop and question what you know. In one experiment, Sloman and a colleague invented a discovery called helium rain. They told a group of volunteers about it, but admitted they could not fully explain what it was. They then asked the volunteers to rate their own understanding of helium rain. Most volunteers rated themselves 1 out of 7, meaning they did not understand the concept.

The researchers then told another group of volunteers about the discovery. This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it works. When asked to rate their understanding, the volunteers gave an average answer of 2. "The scientists' confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding," Sloman says.

According to Sloman, studies show that knowledge spreads like a contagion. This idea can be seen in many fields, including politics. "If everyone around you is saying they understand why a politician is dishonest," Sloman says, "then you're going to start thinking that you understand, too."

Another explanation for the spread of fake news is motivated reasoning," writes Adam Wyatz, an American management professor, "we are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions."

So, in a world where misleading information is common, training people to care about fact-checking is important, especially in online communities. "We should check things and not just take them at face value," Sloman says. "Verify before you believe."

(1) Why does the author use the example of the bat and ball question? A. To warn that people often ignore skills that they learned. B. To show that there are various answers to a question. C. To illustrate that people tend to rush to a conclusion. D. To arouse people's interest in playing guessing games.
(2) In paragraph &, what does the underlined word "verify" mean? A. To make sure something is true. B. To think about something for a long time. C. To express an opinion about something. D. To follow your intuitive response.
(3) When do more volunteers claim to understand helium rain? A. When some of the volunteers explained it to them. B. When Sloman and his colleagues showed them how it works. C. When they have more confidence in themselves. D. When they believed that scientists understood it.
(4) Which of the following is an example of "motivated reasoning"? A. You trust a damaging story about someone who you always judge negatively. B. You post a message online that gives your personal opinion about a news story. C. You search online for more information about a doubtful story on social media. D. You think a university professor dishonest when everybody around you say so.

Many of our family traditions centered around food. We'd gather in the kitchen for every birthday and holiday and enjoy delicious food. My grandparents always held Christmas dinner, which included chicken cacciatore, sausage, meatballs and salad. But right before we sat down to eat, my grandmother would pull me aside to show me the dish she made just for me: fresh pasta (意大利面) with tomato sauce.

It was a simple dish, but to me it was warm food that filled me with happiness. But more than that, it made me feel like I belonged. I was a shy kid and, in many situations, I felt ignored. And here was my grandmother, showing me that I mattered.

Years went by; I moved away and got married. I'd visit throughout the years and my grandmother would serve up a plate of pasta.

When my daughter was born in 2020, for the first time in my life I wasn't about to make the trip back home for Christmas. I cooked my family's traditional foods and my husband and I had a big meal that included, of course, fresh pasta. I had a video call with my grandmother and showed her the pasta. Shortly after the holidays she passed away unexpectedly.

It seemed so unfair that my grandmother passed away soon after I became a parent. I'd hold my daughter and think about how I could tell her what an amazing great-grandmother she had.

In my sadness I came to an answer: food. Late at night after my daughter had gone to bed, I'd go to the kitchen and learn how to make fresh pasta, cooking my grandmother's recipes. Before long I started experimenting, making a bit changes to classic recipes. When my daughter got a little older, I began making special dishes for her with my grandmother's flavors in mind.

I know that no matter how hard I try, my daughter will never have a bowl pasta with sauce exactly like the ones my grandmother would make for me. While that makes me sad, she'll still get to have my pasta sauce. I know there're two things she'll never lack for in this life: pasta and love.

(1) What did the author say about her grandmother's homemade pasta? A. It was a special birthday gift for her. B. It brought her a sense of belonging. C. It was loved by every family member. D. It took a lot of time and energy to prepare.
(2) What made the author's 2020 Christmas dinner different from previous ones? A. She didn't share pasta with her husband. B. She didn't give her grandmother a call. C. She didn't prepare many traditional family foods. D. She didn't have a chance to eat her grandmother's pasta.
(3)  Why did the author learn to make fresh pasta late at night? A. To honour her grandmother. B. To give her daughter a surprise. C. To meet her grandmother's wish. D. To be a role model for her daughter.
(4) What can we learn about the author's pasta sauce? A. It isn't easy to make. B. It isn't to her daughter's liking. C. It tastes exactly the same as her grandmother's. D. It shows her love for her daughter.
(5) What's the best title for the text? A. Different types of pasta B. The origin of pasta C. Love through pasta D. Pasta for Christmas

In 2006, documents were published by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

They suggested that cloned animals and cloned animal products would be allowed into the American food supply.

The FDA has stated that cloned animal products are safe for consumption, and has performed many studies to support this view. In fact, products from cloned animals have already been eaten by some Americans without ill effects. The FDA analyzed the structure and content of cloned animal products and compared it with that of traditionally reproduced animals, and discovered no statistical difference between the two.

Consumers raised serious concerns about cloned animals. The first is the question of whether or not cloned tissue and animal products are truly safe. The second is that many clones are also genetically modified(转基因的)animals, which the FDA has said are unsafe for human consumption. The third is that consumers want to be able to choose what they put into their bodies.

The first concern about cloned animals is almost unnecessary due to the price of producing a clone. Making a clone needs hard work and is very costly. These clones live spoiled lives because they are very valuable, despite biologists' warning that cloned animals decrease diversity.

The second concern, about genetic modification of cloned animals, is more problematic. It may be very difficult to separate genetically modified animals from normal ones. The purpose of genetically modified cloned animals is unclear, and the FDA hasn't allowed their products onto the market, due to health concerns, but the risk of genetic pollution of healthy animals still exists.

Finally, the matter of choice is a large one. Many animal rights activists are worried about clone rights because cloned or not, the animals still have lives. Other consumers are simply trying to eat healthy foods, and have doubts about the cloned animals. If the FDA does not make labeling laws, people may not be able to make informed choices about their food.

(1) Why did the FDA allow cloned animal products for consumption? A. They taste better than normal animal products. B. They have been proved safe in several aspects. C. They appeal to consumers very much. D. They differ from traditional animal products.
(2) What do we know about producing clones of animals? A. It needs less time than raising animals. B. It provides some new medical benefits. C. It takes much more efforts and money. D. It helps increase the diversity of animals.
(3) What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Laws should be made to protect people's right to choose food. B. Cloned animals should have the same rights as humans. C. Cloned animals should be forbidden to enter market. D. Animal rights activists are strongly against cloned animal products.
(4) What's the text mainly about? A. Doubts about cloned animals rights. B. Discussions about how to clone animals. C. Worries about cloned animal consumption. D. Concerns about animal cloning technology.
