On a freezing December morning Matthew Warwick, then a 20-year-old college student, climbed on the edge of Waterloo Bridge in London. That morning,Matthew escaped from a mental health hospital, where he'd been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. He headed straight to the bridge, convinced that his disease was a life sentence.

Hundreds of people passed by. Only one man called Alex Owen, then 25, calmly and quietly walked to Matthew's side.

"You're alright, man? Why are you sitting on a bridge?""

At first Matthew wanted Alex to leave him alone, but something in Alex's calm, down-to-earth manner struck a chord. Matthew felt faith,like he could talk to him.

"It's cold here. Why not have some coffee in a warm cafe? Everything will be OK" For the first time after the diagnosis Matthew felt perhaps it really might. He climbed back.

The police,having received calls from passers-by, were waiting there. They quickly put him into a police car, in case he was to panic and jump. He lost sight of Alex, the person who'd brought him hope.

Matthew ended up back in hospita1. Eventually, he was well enough to return to university and finish his degree. Over the next six years,Matthew often thought about the stranger who had talked him round. Eager to thank him in person,he posted a Facebook message nicknaming the good man Mike. His #Find Mike post was shared millions of times around the world, as far as Canada.

Matthew was overexcited when Alex called him two weeks after his post. They had a reunion, finally having that coffee they had first planned all those years ago.

"Many people walked past, but because of Alex's kindness and sympathy,I've lived a good life. "Matthew said.

In my senior year of high school, Mike and I were lined up in front of a small group of students made up mainly of the leaders of the senior classes. Our teacher said to us, "The two of you will never amount to anything."

There was some snickering (窃笑)from some of the seniors as the teacher continued, "From now on, I am not going to waste any more time on either of you. I am only going to spend my time with these class leaders. You two are the class downs with bad grades, and you will never amount to anything. Now get out of here. "

That teacher did Mike and me the biggest favor of all. While what she said was true in many ways and her words hurt us deeply, her words also inspired both of us to work even harder. They carried us through college and into our own businesses.

A few years ago, Mike and I attended our high school reunion. It was nice to visit with people with whom we had spent three years during a period of time when none of us really knew who we were. It was also interesting to see that most of the socalled senior leaders had not become successful in the years after high school.

I tell this story because Mike and I were not academic whiz kids. We were neither financial experts nor athletic stars. For the most part, we were slowtoaverage learners and students. In my opinion, we were not as naturally gifted as our fathers. Yet it was our teacher's stinging words and the snickering from our classmates that gave us the strength to move forward, to learn from our mistakes and to keep doing in both good times and bad times.

Just because you didn't do well in school, were not popular, bad in math, or have other reasons to underestimate yourself — none of them count in the long run. They only count if you think they count.

For those who're considering beginning your own financial fast track, you may have some doubts about your abilities. Trust that you have everything you need right now to be successful financially. All it takes to bring out your natural Godgiven gifts is your desire, determination and a deep faith that you have a genius and a gift that is unique.

(1) What did Mike and the author think of the teacher's words? A. Her stinging words inspired them.              B. Her inspiring words hurt them deeply. C. Her encouraging words helped them through bad times. D. Her bitter words discouraged them from working harder.
(2) At the school union, the author found ________. A. their former classmates didn't recognize him B. it was boring to see their formers classmates C. most of the class downs turned out successful D. most of the senior leaders didn't become successful
(3) The underlined word "whiz" in Paragraph 5 means ________. A. knownothing B. slow C. stupid D. genius
(4) According to the author, which of the following people can achieve financial success? A. Those who have faith in themselves. B. Those who did not do well in school. C. Those who have natural Godgiven gifts. D. Those who are doubtful about their abilities.

In Scotland, 600,000 tonnes of food are thrown away every year. This amount of food, which could as feed about 1.2 billion poor people, is almost a third of household (家庭) waste. And food waste isn't just a big problem in Scotland.

Money time, and resources (资源) are often wasted by throwing away good food. It also causes very harmful greenhouse gas, which is perilous to the planet.

In the production stage, some foods do not enter the food chain for many reasons. Supermarkets usually care about the quality of food from farms. They often refuse strange-looking and unusually sized produce. However, they seem to forget that it is almost impossible to grow the perfect produce. Food waste at the consumption (消费) stage includes food going out of date and leftovers (剩饭) because of too much food. In households, even mostly fresh fruit and vegetables are thrown away.

In order to reduce food waste, here is what we can do:

Understanding the terms “use by” and “best before” dates. “Use by” dates are there for your safety. It is dangerous to eat food after the use-by date and doing so risks your health. “Best before” dates tell you how long the food will be at its best quality. Once the food passes the date, it isn't necessarily bad, but you should still check, just to be sure.

Every time you go shopping and you bring back new food, put them at the back of your fridge and bring the food that will expire (到期) soon closer to the front. That way, you know what needs to be eaten first.

If you have any food that will expire soon, give it to charity if you aren't going to eat it. They will really appreciate the food you have given.

(1) What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Valuable. B. Dangerous. C. Different. D. Unnecessary.
(2) What should people do to reduce food waste according to the text? A. Pick usually sized produce. B. Improve the quality of farm produce. C. Order produce directly from farmers. D. Avoid buying too much food at a time.
(3) What advice does the author offer to people? A. Buy food that will expire soon to reduce waste. B. Throw away food that passes the best-before date. C. Place food carefully according to its expiry date. D. Give food that has passed its use-by date to charity.

The English writer Samuel Johnson famously said, “You find no man who is willing to leave London. No, sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford.” More than two centuries have passed since Johnson's age, but his words still ring true. Here, you'll find the historic Tower of London and the Tate Modern both considered must-sees. Shakespeare's sonnets(十四行诗) are still being uttered by actors. Londoners most certainly still look up to the royals, but they also rock out to Coldplay and Lily Allen. And while they still sip tea, they now drink Starbucks, too.

How to Save Money in London

Find the free attractions. Many of London's top things to do, including the National Gallery, Hyde Park and the Portobello Road Market, are absolutely free to enjoy.

Ride the Tube. Taking taxis will add up quickly, so buy a pay-as-you-go Oyster Card and travel on London's underground system, nicknamed the “Tube”.

Dine smart. Corridors like Brick Lane offer fantastic cultural food for bargain prices; fish and chip shops are a cheap standby and takeaway food costs less than dine-in.

London Culture & Customs

London is one of the fashion capitals of the world, and its residents tend to reflect that. Practically, pack an umbrella for the rainy days and a scarf for the cold ones. As for tipping, restaurants and cafes will usually add a 10-to-15-percent service charge to the bill. If a service charge is not allotted(指定), it's customary to tip the same (between 10 and 15 percent). If you're drinking at a pub or wine bar, tipping is flexible. And in a taxicab, tip the driver to the nearest pound or about 10 percent of the cost.

London Dining

London used to be highly criticized for its heavy and common menu items. Now, London is considered as one of the most gourmet cities in the world. And with its melting pot of cultures, it's not difficult to see why. London offers everything from modern British to Malaysian. For Indian food, we suggest visiting the curry houses on Brick Lane. If you want a real high tea experience, book reservations at the Ritz, at Fortnum & Mason, or at the Dorchester — but be sure to dress the part. Pub culture is still alive and well, so if you have a hankering for fried fish and salty chips (or French fries), you'll still find them here. And for a quick bite, exchange a few pounds for a kebab, a quick sandwich or some to go sushi, which can be found in restaurants throughout the city.

(1) What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Life in London is exciting but tiring. B. Londoners are traditional and fashion conscious. C. Many well-known writers like to live in London. D. Coffee is more popular with Londoners than tea.
(2) The underlined word “hankering” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________”.

A. desire B. respect C. preparation D. talent
(3) In which column of a newspaper can we find the passage?

A. Culture. B. Travel. C. Education. D. Entertainment.
