3. Satellites (卫星) are very useful in our daily lives. They help us make phone calls, watch TV, use GPS, get weather forecasts, and do many other things.

Satellites are always made of metal (金属). But scientists in Japan are testing a wooden (木制的) satellite called "LignoSat." "Ligno" comes from the Latin word for wood. The small satellite is in the shape of a cube (立方体). It is only about the size of your hand. The cube has a metal supporting parts, but its sides (面) are made of wood. The scientists cut the pieces of wood carefully and used a special woodworking way to put them together without using a nail.

Using wood in satellites can help make less space rubbish. Satellites always burn up when they come back into Earth. Burning metal satellites leaves behind a cloud of pollution; burning wood does not. Also, wood lasts longer in space because there is no water or oxygen.

On November 5, LignoSat went into space. In December, it got into orbit and started to fly around the Earth at a height of about 400 kilometers. Over the next six months, it will help scientists answer a few questions. For example, how well will the wood last? In space, it can be as cold as -100℃ and as hot as 100℃ in an hour. How will the wood change? If the experiment works, scientists might use wood to build bigger satellites or even houses in space!

(1) In which scenes do we need the help of satellites?

①When we decide what to wear today.                    ②When we watch a film in the cinema.

③When we speak on the mobile phones.                    ④When we find the way to the train station.

A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
(2) What do we know about "LignoSat" from Paragraph 2? A. It looks like a ball. B. It is as small as a hand. C. It is put together by using nails. D. It is made of wood without any metal.
(3) Why did the scientists use wood to build the satellite? A. Because it produced less pollution. B. Because it weighed less than metal. C. Because it could collect space rubbish. D. Because it could come back to the Earth quickly.
(4) What might scientists do if the experiment with LignoSat works? A. They might stop using satellites. B. They might use metal to build bigger satellites. C. They might use wood to build houses in space. D. They might only use wood to make things in space.
(5) What is the main idea of the passage? A. The influence of metal satellites. B. The use of satellites in daily life. C. A new way to build metal satellites. D. An introduction to the wooden satellite.
