There was a saying in ancient China,"The Winter Solstice (冬至) is as important as the Spring Festival (春节)."

The Winter Solstice became a winter festival during the Han Dynasty. On this day, people would have a rest.

The Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, falls on Dec. 22 this year. Northern China has the tradition of eating dumplings on this day, while people in southern China eat tangyuan (汤圆).

The Winter Solstice marks the beginning of deep winter. The important thing during the days of the Winter Solstice is to keep away from cold. We should wear more clothes to stay warm and try to reduce unnecessary outdoor activities.

The Winter Solstice is also a time for family gatherings. However, Tang Xiaoqian, an 11-year-old girl, will have to spend the festival with only her grandmother. She hasn't seen her parents for four years. In fact, there are lots of children like her in her village. They are growing up without their parents. They are called left-behind children (留守儿童).

To make more money, a number of parents have to leave their children behind and go to cities to look for jobs. They can't go back home to celebrate festivals with their children and even can't see their children for years.

(1) When did the Winter Solstice become a winter festival?
(2) What do people in southern China eat on the Winter Solstice?
(3) What is the important thing during the days of the Winter Solstice?
(4) With whom will Tang Xiaoqian spend the Winter Solstice?
(5) Why do a number of parents leave their children behind?

You are invited to a large party. Loud music is playing, and lots of people are dancing. Do you dance or talk to as many people as you can call all night? Later, you cannot fall asleep—you want more conversation! Or do you prefer a quieter corner? Or perhaps you cannot wait to go home early and relax by yourself.

Which of these people sound most like you? Person A, who tries to talk to everyone and stays late? Or Person B, who prefers to keep quiet and leaves early?

If you said Person A, you are probably more extroverted(性格外向的). If you said Person B, you are probably more introverted(内向的). Or perhaps you are Person C and fall somewhere in the middle. Introverted and extroverted people are two commonly used words to describe a person's personality. And they are also commonly misused and misunderstood.

Introverts may be thought as quiet, shy and timid. Extroverts may be thought as bold, confident, loud and full of energy. Introverted and extroverted people may fit those descriptions. But these same descriptions do not define(下定义)introversion and extroversion properly.

Introverts and extroverts use their brains differently, and they get their energy differently. Introversion is the state of being mostly concerned with one's own mental life. Extroversion is the opposite. Extroversion is the state of being mostly concerned with what is outside oneself.

People who consider themselves introverts may say they “need to be alone to charge their batteries”. However, introverts may still live being social and going to parties. But such activities require time to prepare.

Extroverts may say, “I don't need ‘alone time', I feel more relaxed being around other people.” Even so, extroverts can still feel unsure or not confident among other people.

So where do you fall on the introversion/ extroversion chart?

(1) If Person B is invited to a large party, what does he probably do?
(2) Which three words in this passage are used to describe introverts?
(3) What's the main idea of the 5th paragraph?
(4) What do “such activities” refer to in paragraph 6?
(5) How do extroverts usually make themselves relaxed?
(6) Which personality do you prefer, introverted or extroverted? Show your reason!

Many other people and I in Britain love charity shops because we can find them on every street. The charity shops sell all kinds of things and they are very cheap.

The first charity shop was opened by Oxfam in 1947.Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK.My favorite charity shop in my hometown is the Cross Shop. There I always find children's books, all 10 to 20 pence each. They are really cheap.

Most of the shop workers in charity shops are volunteers,    each shop has a manager and he gets some money.Every morning you see bags of things outside the shops. Some people bring and put them there without waiting for thanks. In fact,over90%of the things in charity shops are from kind people.

All the money the shops get goes to charity work.Charity shops raise more than 110 million pounds every year. The money is for sick and poor children。homeless and disabled people, and many others. In a charity shop you can get cheap but nice things. You might even feel special while shopping.
