George Shaw was one of the greatest British writers. A lot of people respected (尊重) him and they often wanted to visit him or he was asked to all kinds of parties and dinners. He had to refuse most of them, so he could have enough time to write more.
Once a friend of Mr. Shaw's asked him to dinner. The man helped him when he was unknown. So he found it was difficult to refuse. As soon as he went into the hall, his friend came up to him and introduced him to all his friends. They were happy to know the great writer and warmly talked with him except (除...之外) a lady in beautiful clothes. She was so proud (高傲的) that she seemed to see nobody, "She is Mrs. Smith," a friend said to Mr. Shaw in a low voice. "Her husband is a minister(部长)."
Mr. Shaw understood immediately (立刻). He talked with all the people there except Mrs. Smith. It made the woman unhappy and she left there before the dinner was over.
The next morning, Mr. Shaw heard the doorbell while he was writing in his room. He opened the door and came in a girl. She passed an invitation (请帖) to the writer. On it was written, "Mrs. Smith will be free from two to four next Saturday."
Mr. Shaw said nothing. Instead, he wrote on the back of the invitation. "So will Mr. Shaw!"
