On 20th June 1702 I set off(出发) for Surat, on a ship called the Adventure(冒险). And indeed "adventure" was an appropriate name for that ship, and for everything that happened on that trip.

The first part of our trip went well. But later there were some terrible storms(糟糕的暴风雨). The winds were so strong that they sent our ship off course(航线). We had no idea where we were.

At last, when the storms stopped, we saw an island(岛). We had no more drinking water so the captain sent me to find some freshwater on the island. I set off with some other men in a small boat. And when we got there, I travelled around the island by myself while the men looked for water.

That was a big mistake(错误). When I went back there were no men and no boat! Then I saw themrowing back to our ship with a giant(巨人) following them in the sea! They were very afraid.

I ran as fast as I could. I then climbed a big hill and when I looked around I saw fields. Then I saw other giants working in the fields.

"On my last trip I was a giant on an island of tiny(小的) people and now I am a tiny person on an island of giant!" It was not a nice feeling. I was so sad and hid behind a big tree. I had to think of a plan but at that time one of the giants saw me.

    Li Mei and Wang Tao are the students of Yucai Middle School. They are good friends. They want to join some school clubs.

    There are many clubs in their school. They are English club, music club. swimming club, chess club and art club. Li Mei wants to join the music club. She wants to be a musician when she grows up. Her favorite singer is Wang Junkai. She can sing and dance and she can play the piano and the guitar very well, but she can't play the violin. Wang Tao can play chess and he can swim well. But he can only speak a little English. So he wants to join the English club to improve his English. On Saturdays, he often plays basketball with his friends. He wants to be a basketball player like Yi Jianlian.

    Xu Rujun with his classmates in Shanghai did something special this year. They worked in groups with traffic police at different crossroads in the city. Holding small red flags, the students helped keep order and stopped people from jaywalking (乱穿马路).

    As part of the school project, Xu's school has told its students to do more community work.

    After the half day of exhausting (筋疲力尽的) work, Xu told himself not to jaywalk any more. "I think through community work, we get to help others and more importantly, we grow a sense of responsibility (责任感)," he said.

    Community service is an important part of education for teenagers around the world. In the US and Canada, high school students need to finish 40 hours of community service before graduation (毕业). For those Americans who have finished 1,400 hours of community work. They can be awarded (奖励) nearly ¥5,000(33,000 yuan).

    Chinese students today do more community work, too. For example, starting from 2010. Sichuan high school students have been asked to do 10 days of community work. It will become part of their school grade.

    Qian Lijun, 16, and her classmates in Suzhou, Jiangsu went to a local elder care home this winter. They put Spring Festival couplets (对联) on the walls and cheered up the people living there.

    Li Xiaotian, 15, of Anshan said he used to clear flyers(小广告) from telephone poles(电线杆)with his classmates. They brought tools, towels and buckets and worked for three hours under the summer sun. "It was tiring, but seeing the clean poles without ugly ads-we really felt proud," he said.
