A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It's the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from.

As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.

As you know, prefixes (前缀)and suffixes(后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.

Let's look at one common root word used in English. "Alter" from the Latin word means "other". When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with "other". Examine the word "alternate". Can you find the Latin root in it?

▶  If you and your friend like to eat out. first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.

▶  If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday.

▶  If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.

Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your "rooting for words" skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.

Some people may think that students who study abroad have more time for fun and less homework. But in fact, Grade 12 students in Canada are just as busy as students in China. In Canada, students have to work hard to all the tests and homework. To relax oneself from the important courses, like math and English, students will often choose one or two elective(选择性的) courses in the last year of high school. They are usually easier and have more fun.

Take me as an example—I chose an interesting course, cooking and health. This course is to help students develop a healthy lifestyle and diet. The biggest fun of this course is that students can experience cooking. I believe this is the reason why there are a large number of students on the waiting list. Usually, there are one or two food labs every month. Teachers always let students decide what they want to cook. Students are divided into four groups with six people, and we enjoy the cooking time a lot.

After attending this class for more than three months, I believe it's not as easy as others think it is because it requires basic knowledge of science, life skills and practice.

Some people might think they are just for fun and don't need to be taken seriously. But I believe it is a great way to get relaxed from the other heavy schoolwork and I do learn a lot from those elective courses.

(1) Grade 12 students in Canada take fun elective courses to____.  A. pass some free time B. have more life practice C. get a healthy lifestyle D. get relaxed from schoolwork
(2) Which of the following is TRUE about the cooking and health course? A. It is very popular with students. B. There are four people in each group. C. Teachers always decide what to cook. D. The course usually lasts three months.
(3) The writer thinks the elective courses are____.  A. easy but boring B. relaxing and helpful C. difficult and boring D. interesting but unimportant
(4) The best title for the text might be____.  A. Education in Canada B. School Life in Canada C. Canada's Elective Classes D. Advice for Choosing Elective Classes

The second live class from China's space station was held on the afternoon of Mar. 23, delivered by Shenzhou-13 crew (机组) members Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu to students on Earth. Wang performed several scientific experiments. In one experiment, Wang used a toy of Bing Dwen Dwen, the popular mascot of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, to show how objects fly in a weightless (失重的) environment. They also showed students two pieces of cutting-edge scientific equipment inside the space station. Hundreds of students in Beijing, Lhasa and Urumqi watched the event.

Before ending the class, the astronauts answered questions taken from members of the public and raised by students. The questions covered different facets of life and work in space, such as how to take care of their skin, whether hot water is available, if the moon looks different from the Tiangong station, and how tears move in a microgravitational (微重力) environment.

Pang Zhihao, a retired spaceflight researcher from the China Academy of Space Technology and writer of several space-themed books, said the class will be an "eye-opener" for youngsters, especially students, by implanting (植入) the love of science and creativity in them. "Many well-known scientists were created by their interest and curiosity about ‘strange things'. The experiments done by the astronauts will put 'question marks' in our students' mind, and the youngsters will then move to find answers and explore (探索) more places unknown to humankind," he said.
