People living on Garden
Grove Lane always think of Geneva and Ted when they get into trouble.
One day, as usual, the
old couple picked up a call from a neighbour. A snake cut off his way to work. Ted
broke his leg a few days ago, so Geneva had to offer help alone this time. She
picked up a grabber(爪钩)and headed to the
neighbour's house.
A half-metre long snake
was lying at the front door when Geneva arrived at the house. Perhaps it lost
home after the heavy rain. Geneva controlled the snake with the grabber and
saved the neighbour from danger. This was one of the many timely aids from the
old couple.
Also, they made plans to
bring benefits to the community. When they moved to Garden Grove Lane five
years ago, they found some sewers (下水道)of the town
had been in disrepair for years. Grass grew and filled the waterway. Ted
volunteered to clean the grass, but there were some areas out of his reach. He asked
the city hall for help. They joined hands to manage the waste water.
At the beginning of 2020,
the Reporter-News put Geneva and Ted on its Everyday Heroes name list. The
daily local newspaper in Abilene, the US, put outa run of their stories. "They
made a difference to their community without return," it reported, When
they heard the news, Geneva said, "We wouldn't say we're heroes. We are
just people who want to help our neighbours. "
Johnnie Lou Boyd, one of
the old couple's neighbours, firstly heard of the couple from words of mouth
before they came out in the newspaper. "Most of their actions don't draw
such attention. But people on Garden Grove Lane have always taken them as their
everyday heroes, "Johnnie said." We hope they will stay with us for
many more years. "
