For many children, the very thought of surgery is terrifying. The hospital environment — white halls, the sharp, clean smell of medicine, and the frightening medical instruments — can feel scary. This anxiety often reaches its height in the final walk towards the operating room, a moment thick with fear for both the children and their parents. However, one kind doctor in Brazil has changed this difficult experience, turning fear into strength by allowing his young patients to walk into the operating room not as scared and small children, but as superheroes.

Dr. Leandro B. Guimarães, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, said the idea started with a difficult moment with a little girl named Allana. She was just two years old, and as he carried her down the hallway, she cried uncontrollably, her small body shaking against his and her tiny fists holding his white coat tightly. Her desperate cry echoed (回响) in the hallway, each one a reminder of the complete terror she was experiencing. That day, standing outside the operating room with a heartbroken child in his arms, he made a promise to himself: No child under his care would ever have to approach surgery in tears again. He was determined to find a way to replace their fear with courage.

"I let the children choose which hero they want to become," Dr. Guimarães explained, a warm smile on his face. His clinic now features a special "Hero's Chest", filled with many wonderful costumes. "I tell them we will go in ‘flying' or running and that our mission is to clear their nose and ears. I only enter the surgical room when they are ready and fully engaged in the game." He even encourages parents to join the process if a child is particularly nervous, allowing a mother to wear a Catwoman mask or a father to hold the edge of a Superman cape (斗篷). The goal is to make a fearful experience feel calmer, lighter, and magical.

The transformation begins the moment a child selects their character. A quiet, withdrawn boy might gather his courage as he puts on a Batman suit. A shy little girl's face lights up as she places a Wonder Woman tiara (皇冠) upon her head. Dr. Guimaräes and his team fully commit to the process, with nurses becoming "mission control" and anesthesiologists (麻醉师) introduced as"science officers" providing special powers for the journey ahead.

Kris and Robin are sisters who grew up in Wisconsin. They work together and serve together.

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey struck with strong force across Florence, bringing fierce winds and record-breaking rainfall. The city was destroyed by the storm's intensity, leading to widespread damage and flooding. Emergency services worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped by the rising floodwaters, while power failure left entire neighborhoods in darkness.

In the face of such misfortune, both of Kris and Robin felt depressed and helpless, yet eager to assist. Upon discovering Convoy of Hope's volunteer program, they didn't hesitate to sign up. Soon after, they were invited to training, marking the start of their mission to serve together in this fighting.

However, their initial response to the arrangement was filled with anxiety for Kris. "I am kind of nervous before heading out. I wonder if I could remember my training?" said Kris Logemann, her voice with uncertainty. "Don't worry! You see the staff do such a great job. They are incredibly supportive to us and will provide guidance and reassure every step of the way." Robin comforted. She also added, "I am right there for you, too, Kris, we are in it together, and we'll make it just like before."

Robin Melcher remembered the first few rescues she and her sister went on. "We were helping a woman who had just lost her husband," said Kris. "We were taking things out of her house, but also holding her hand and loving her. The ability to do that... it's just really cool." "Obviously we love it because we come back," added Kris.

Full of power, Kris and Robin put their whole hearts into the training. During the Convoy of Hope's detailed training program, they learned about disaster response, safety procedures, and psychological first aid. Through hands-on practice and team-building exercise, they prepared physically and mentally for the tasks ahead. As Kris and Robin continued their volunteer work, they were faced with one of their most heart-struck and unforgettable challenges.

Jon's Pajama Problem

Oh no, he had done it again. He'd forgotten something important. Last year on their family trip to his uncle's cottage for Christmas, he had forgotten the bag with the toiletries (洗漱用品) in it. Neither he nor his brother had toothbrushes or toothpaste or shampoo. He'd had to borrow from his cousins who were not thrilled to share, and Jon was not too thrilled that his hair smelled like strawberries all week.

The year before, Jon had left the marshmallows and graham crackers at home, so they had no mores for the evening fire and annual reading of "The Night Before Christmas". They had to nibble on (小口咬) some stale (不新鲜的) crackers instead. His cousins still teased him about that.

And now, Jon couldn't believe he had forgotten to pack his pajamas. At home, that wouldn't really be a problem: he had extra pajamas. But at the cottage, there were photographs dating back for years and years of Jon's family on Christmas morning in front of the tree in their pajamas. Jon was feeling awful. He would be the first one to break the family tradition ever. Would he ruin Christmas for everyone? What could he do?

He didn't want to tell his parents. He went looking around the cottage, and found an old T- shirt. That could work. He tried putting it on, but it was too small. He tried to stretch it, but it must have been washed 100 times, and it ripped when he pulled on it.

At this point, Jon was getting desperate. He snuck into his brother's luggage, trying to find some spare pajamas, only to find himself in trouble when his older brother caught him and yelled. His brother hated it when Jon messed with his stuff.

Nurturing nature

Tom Satre owned a boat. One day, he was enjoying the weekend with his family. Tom's daughter Anna was looking around as the family was traveling across the water. Then she saw something strange from afar. They eventually got close enough to figure out what it was. At first, they thought that it was a group of birds or may be even some sea lions. Their theories were all wrong! They were able to see ears. As they approached, they realized that it was actually a group of deer struggling to stay afloat!

Everyone on the boat was surprised to find four Sitka deer approaching their way. They stilled the boat and the four deer swam nearer and nearer. They swam right towards the boat — then they started to circle the boat. They were looking up and looked like they needed help.

They were in Alaska. It should go without saying that the deer had to be taken out of the freezing waters. Tom said that these were the most upset deer he had ever seen in his life. The deer were exhausted and they were clearly struggling to stay afloat. However, Tom and the others were unsure how they could get the deer on board the boat.

As an outdoorsman, Tom was able to tell that the animals were young because their antlers (鹿角) were not fully developed yet. He came up with a plan and attached rope to their necks and everyone on the boat had to pull up the deer so that they can come on board. Those poor deer! Wild deer are normally easily frightened and cautious in the presence of humans. Not these deer, however, as they climbed the boat immediately. Once aboard, the creatures simply passed out from exhaustion. They couldn't stand up on their own. They couldn't shake the water off their coats.
