Have you ever wondered what happens to your mobile phones and laptops after you throw them out to make way for a newer model? According to its latest Global E-Waste Monitor, India is the third top producer of e-waste in the world. E-waste in Indian landfill goes on to pollute soil and groundwater, affecting food supply systems and water sources.

Thankfully, the country has a new group of artists who are changing these thrown mechanical items-from mobile phones to old televisions-into large murals( 壁 画 )and artworks to creatively show their concern for the waste problem.

Over the past quarter of a century, Mumbai's Haribaabu Naatesan has transformed hundreds of tonnes of e-waste into art, integrating elements from nature and industry. "I get my waste material from friends. relatives and neighbours who know my interest in e-art and send me bags of thrown electronic appliances, "says Naatesan. Over his career, he has created huge murals for several companies. He has also showed his work at the India Art Fair, as well as several other national displays.

Another artist Vishwanath Davangere has also long worked with e-waste. He likes to take apart old laptops and reassemble(重新组装)them into birds, animals and plants. After retirement, he started pursuing this hobby more seriously and started selling his creations across the world. His most outstanding works include a robotic Egyptian statue with glowing red eyes and a Milky Way made from keyboard keys. He hopes to enable others to reconsider their own consumption habits and make more environmentally conscious choices.

"By giving e-waste a second chance, I aim to raise awareness about the environmental impact of electronic waste."says Davangare, who today has a collection of more than 600 eco-art objects.

(1) Why do the artists create artworks from E-waste? A. To promote their artistic career. B. To update electronic appliances. C. To make profits for several companies. D. To express their environmental concern.
(2) What can we learn about Naatesan from paragraph 3? A. His creations are displayed globally. B. He gains support from people around. C. He has been creating e-art for 10 years. D. His works integrate technology and history.
(3) Which of the following best describes Davangere? A. Reliable. B. Confident. C. Devoted. D. Generous.
(4) Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. E-waste Recycling Sweeping the World B. Environmental Problems Worrying Indians C. An Art Movement Turning Trash into Cash D. Indian Creatives Transforming E-waste into Art

I am a freshman at Orange High School. In 2013, I founded an organization called Love For The Elderly. So many elderly people have no one to care for them, and no one to love them. When I say this, I am talking about pure love, unconditional love that shows kindness no matter what the situations may be.

The elderly have smoothed the pathway of success for our generation. They should be shown appreciation(感激) and kindness, but are often forgotten. I am are all of you have someone in your hearts who has been at a nursing home. Think of them while I say this; they should get the best, nothing but the best. The elderly are such an unusual group of people, and their shining wisdom can most certainly be learned from. This idea of showing appreciation to the elderly reverberated(回响) inside my head, until finally, I decided it was time to step up and make a difference.

My love for and ability in writing led me to create an organization, where people from all across the world send nameless letters filled with kindness and joy, from Iceland, Romania, Finland, Australia, and more. I then send these letters to senior centers, and nursing homes located all across the country. To this date, I have collected over 1, 000 letters, and the reaction I have received from these organizations has been truly unbelievable.

This past month, I had the opportunity to receive $100 from KindSpring through their monthly kindness competition to help my organization. This money has been of great help. We do not receive much money, and so it helped to pay for many costs, including postage and envelopes. This act of kindness has been very helpful to my organization, and I could not be more appreciative. If any of you would like to get involved in my organization, please visit lovefortheelderly. org.

(1) Why did the author set up his organization?  A. To help the elderly with their daily life. B. To organize activities for the elderly. C. To offer true love to the elderly. D. To raise money for the elderly.
(2) Which of the following agrees with the author's opinion about the elderly?  A. They are being treated well. B. They should end up in senior centers. C. They are wiser than the young. D. They don't get enough attention.
(3) What helped the author create his organization?  A. The letters received worldwide. B. His writing ability. C. His family's encouragement. D. The support from senior centers.
(4) What can be learned from the last paragraph?  A. The author doesn't have much money. B. The elderly were very thankful to the author. C. The author turned to KindSpring for help. D. The organization can't be larger.

3. Read the following passage. The passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

Physicists concern themselves with problems that are profound. The origins of the universe, the nature of time, the composition of matter. And then, there's spaghetti. A spaghetti problem has puzzled physicists as famous as Richard Feynman, and he has even been awarded an Ig Nobel Prize. At issue—"Why spaghetti doesn't break into two pieces. Why it breaks into three pieces or more. "

Ronald Heisser, now a graduate student at Cornell, decided to explore the misbehavior of spaghetti for an undergraduate math course he took at MIT.

Now, you may never have noticed it, but it's nearly impossible to break a single, dry piece of spaghetti in half. It is claimed that Feynman noodled with the puzzle. And Heisser became similarly possessed.

"I'm a little bit of a contrarian person. So I thought it would be fun to try and break it into two. No one said you couldn't do that. They just said why it doesn't break into two. "

In fact, the French researchers who were awarded the Ig Nobel prize in 2006 found that when spaghetti is bent evenly from both ends it will crack near the center, where the stick is most curved. But this initial break sets up a vibrational wave(震动波) that quickly breaks the stick further. So you get multiple fragments (碎片).

What Heisser wondered was whether he could somehow get around this vibrational" snapback" effect. And he found you have to do the twist. Heisser built a device for torqueing(转矩) his spaghetti with precision and he observed the resulting fragmentation with a high-speed camera. He discovered that introducing a twist of around 360 degrees to the long strand allowed him to produce the desired single pair of spaghetti pieces.

Although the project was a bit of fun I think it's quite nice when you can find interesting physics and maths hiding behind everyday, sort of boring objects, " said Ronald Heisser.

(1) The writer mentions Richard Feynman and the Ig Nobel Prize in paragraph 1 to ____.  A. show that the spaghetti problem is worth exploring B. provide evidence for the significance of physics C. introduce a physicist and an important prize D. justify the necessity of learning physics
(2) "A contrarian person" (in paragraph 4) most probably refers to someone ____.  A. who respects those well-known scientists B. who is always questioning established theories C. who likes looking for fun from some boring tasks D. who deliberately behaves in a different way from others
(3) Ronald Heisser's project differs from the French researchers' in that it is intended to find out ____. A. what is the most efficient way to break dry spaghetti B. why it is important to solve the spaghetti puzzle C. why a piece of spaghetti cannot break into two D. how to break a piece of spaghetti into two
(4) By the last sentence of the passage, Ronald Heisser implies that ____. A. daily objects have been inspiring many physicists B. physics and maths are closely related to our daily life C. our daily life would be boring without physics or maths D. the project wasn't expected to deal with everyday objects at first
