Throughout all the events in my life, one in particular sticks out more than the others. As I reflect on this significant event, a smile spreads across my face. As I think of Shanda, I feel loved and grateful.

It was my twelfth year of dancing. I thought it would end up like any other year: stuck in emptiness, forgotten and without the belief of any teacher or friend that I really had the potential to achieve greatness.

However,I met Shanda,a young,talented choreographer(编舞者). She influenced me to work to the best of my ability, pushed me to keep going when I wanted to give up, encouraged me and showed me the real importance of dancing. Throughout our hard work, not only did my ability to dance grow, but my friendship with Shanda grew as well.

With the end of the year came our show time. As I walked to a backstage filled with other dancers, 1 hoped for a good performance that would prove my improvement. I waited anxiously for my turn. Finally, after what seemed like days, the loudspeaker announced my name. Butterflies filled my stomach as I took trembling steps onto the big lighted stage. But, with the determination to succeed and eagerness to live up to Shanda's expectations for me, I began to dance. All my troubles and nerves went away as I danced my whole heart out.

As I walked up to the judge to receive my first place shining,gold trophy(奖杯),I realized that dance is not about becoming the best. It was about loving dance for dance itself, a getaway from all my problems in the world. Shanda showed me that you could let everything go and just dance what you feel at that moment. After all the doubts that people had in me, I believed in myself and did not care what others thought. Thanks to Shanda, dance became more than a love of mine, but a passion.

(1) What did the author think her dancing would be for the twelfth year? A. A change for the better. B. A disappointment as before. C. A proof of her potential. D. A pride of her teachers and friends.
(2) How did Shanda help the author? A. By offering her financial help. B. By entering her in a competition. C. By coaching her for longer hours. D. By awakening her passion for dancing.
(3) How did the author feel when she stepped on the stage? A. Proud. B. Nervous. C. Scared. D. Relieved.
(4) What can we learn from the author's story? A. Success lies in patience. B. Fame is a great thirst of the young. C. A good teacher matters. D. A youth is to be treated with respect.

Here are four women who made it their life's mission to make the world a better place through environmental activism.

Greta Thunberg

"I have not accomplished anything. "This statement was made by Greta Thunberg(17 years old)and it couldn't be further from the truth. Her dedication to protecting the environment for our future generations is all accomplishment on its own. Her ability to resist to adults in power is admirable and continues to push the importance of conservation to the front of our minds.

Peggy Shelmrd

WE ACT for Environmental Justice is an organization that" through advocacy, planning, and research…mobilizes low-income communities to make environmental changes. "At the helm(掌权)of WE ACT is Peggy Shepard. Her goal is to make sure that sustainable environmental practices are accessible to all, regardless of circumstance.

Rachel Carson

American marine biologist, writer, scientist, and ecologist, Rachel Carson(1907—1964), was way ahead of her time. She wrote about conservation in the late 1930s and focused on her mission of protecting our oceans.

Julia "Butterfly" Hill

In the late 90s, Julia" Butterfly" Hill spent 738 days living in an ancient redwood, called Luna. This act brought awareness to the immense human threats to Redwood trees. Julia continues to advocate for the environment. "By standing together in unity, solidarity and love, we will heal the wounds in the earth and in each other. We can make a positive difference through our actions. "

(1) What do we know about Greta Thunberg? A. She has not accomplished anything. B. She seldom tells the truth. C. She faces powerful people bravely to protect environment. D. She shows great respect and admiration to people in power.
(2) Why did Peggy Shepard set up the organization WE ACT? A. To help poor people to lead a better life. B. To appeal to low-income group to protect our environment. C. To make people aware of the environmental status. D. To control the changes of environment.
(3) Who preferred taking on-the-spot actions to protect environment? A. Greta Thunberg. B. Peggy Shepard. C. Rachel Carson. D. Julia" Butterfly"Hill.

Tapping into the water cycle and producing electricity from rainy days could be one way to grow our renewable(可再生的)energy use.

Until now, scientists have been unable to get water droplets(雨滴) to produce a large amount of power—but we may finally have a breakthrough. While we're still a long way from umbrellas, the latest approach shows there might be a way to get power from rain showers at a level of efficiency(效率)that makes these systems practical.

New research has found a method that could produce enough power from a single droplet of rain to light up 100 LED bulbs. That's a big jump forward in efficiency in the field.

Scientists have been looking into this type of power production for years, but the physics of converting the energy of raindrops into electricity are much harder to do than getting the energy from a rising tide or a flowing stream.

One of the improvements the team built into their droplet-based electricity generator(发动机)(DEG) was the use of a polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE film, which is able to accumulate a surface charge as it's continuously hit by water droplets, until it gradually reaches saturation(饱和). The team found that as water droplets hit the surface and spread out, the drops act as a "bridge" that connects two electrodes(电极). The droplet bridge in turn creates a closed-loop surface so that all of the collected energy can be released(释放). This approach could eventually be applied anywhere that water hits a solid surface, the researchers say—the hull of a boat, the inside of a water bottle, or the top of an umbrella. However, there's still plenty of work to do to get this ready for practical use, with the researchers hoping to have a prototype ready in the next five years.

(1) What can we infer from the first two paragraphs? A. Umbrellas will be of great use in the near future. B. Rainy days have ever been made use of by scientists. C. There's a possibility of making power by using water drops. D. Scientists have made great achievements in using water drops.
(2) Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word "converting" in paragraph 4? A. Improving. B. Changing. C. Producing. D. Spreading.
(3) What's the role of PTFE film according to the passage? A. To give off the energy. B. To hit water drops repeatedly. C. To work as a "bridge". D. To collect a charge on the surface.
(4) What's the most suitable title for this passage? A. A New Way to Produce Electricity from Rain B. The Working Theory of Water Drops C. The Benefits of Using Clean Energy D. The Future Use of Umbrellas

At first glance, it seems that giant pandas (大熊猫) might not be good at hide- and-seek. With their black and white coats, they appear to have a hard time matching their backgrounds and avoiding detection by their enemies. But a new study finds that the unique markings, in fact, provide effective camouflage (伪装) and help them disappear into their surroundings. Scientists have long wondered what function the black-and-white coloring plays.

For their study, researchers analyzed photos of giant pandas in their natural habitats. "We've found that the animals are very well camouflaged because they use habitats with dark and lighting conditions, and also snow during some time of the year," study author Tim Caro of the University of Bristol and the University of California, Davis, tells Treehugger.

They found that the black patches (块) of fur match primarily shade and dark tree trunks. They also match the ground, rocks and leaves. The white fur patches match snow, rocks, and waxy, bright leaves. Sometimes pandas also have patches of pale brown fur and those match rocks, ground and shady background areas.

The researchers also explored a type of environmental camouflage known as disruptive coloration. That's when highly contrasting patterns or very visible boundaries on an animal break up its body outline. They found that the black and white borders on the panda's coat make it less noticeable, particularly from farther away.

It might seem a bit confusing because giant pandas are very easy to spot at a zoo, for instance. But the environment and the viewer make a difference.

"We modelled their coloration through enemies' eyes as well as how humans see them so we are sure of the results." Caro says.

"It seems that giant pandas appear easily noticeable to us because of short viewing distances and unnatural backgrounds, when we see them, either in photographs or at the zoo, it is almost always from close up, and often against a backdrop that doesn't reflect their natural habitats," says author Nick Scott-Samuel of the University of Bristol. "From a more realistic enemy's view, the giant panda is actually rather well camouflaged."

(1) What is the general first impression of giant pandas? A. They like staying away from humans. B. They are really good at hide-and-seek. C. They match the backgrounds very well. D. They can be easily detected by enemies
(2) What does the underlined word "They" in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Tree trunks. B. Pale brown pandas. C. Black fur patches. D. Shady background areas
(3) What can we learn about giant pandas from Nick Scott-Samuel's words? A. They are less noticeable in natural environments. B. They can be easily noticed even from farther away. C. They often disappear into backgrounds in a zoo. D. They can not camouflage from an enemy's view.
(4) What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Giant Pandas Hide Themselves From Tourists B. Giant Pandas Are Actually Good at Camouflaging C. The Black-and-white Coloring Proves Appealing D. You Are More Likely to Spot Giant Pandas in Nature
