A multi-institutional team of researchers conducted the first study to evaluate how the duration of nightly sleep early in the semester affects first year college students' end-of-semester grade point average (GPA), Using Fitbit sleep trackers, they found that students on average sleep 6. 5 hours a night, but negative outcomes accumulate when students received less than six hours of sleep a night. The results are available in the Feb. 13 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Sleep guidelines recommend teenagers get 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night. Many college students experience irregular and insufficient sleep.

David Creswell, the William S. Dietrich Ⅱ Professor in Psychology and Neuroscience at the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, led a team of researchers to evaluate the relationship between sleep and GPA. "Animal studies have shown how critical sleep is for learning and memory," said Creswell. "Here we show how this work translates to humans. The less nightly sleep a first year college student gets at the beginning of the school term predicts lower GPA at the end of the term. Lack of sleep may be hurting students' ability to learn in their college classrooms. "

The study evaluated more than 600 first-year students across five studies at three universities. The students wore wrist Fitbit devices to monitor and record their sleep patterns. The researchers found that students in the study sleep on average 6. 5 hours a night. More surprisingly, the researchers found that students who receive less than six hours of sleep experienced a pronounced decline in academic performance. In addition, each hour of sleep lost corresponded to a 0. 07 decrease in end-of-term GPA.

"Once you start dipping(下降)below six hours, you are starting to accumulate massive sleep debt that can impair a student's health and study habits, compromising the whole system," said Creswell. "Most surprising to me was that no matter what we did to make the effect go away, it persisted."

It was a rainy day and I was walking down the street feeling comfortable and happy. I wanted to do something kind for someone else without any reason and purpose, almost as if I was just trying to spread the abundance (充足) of love I was receiving. It was then that I saw a teenage girl dressed in tattered clothes, getting soaked(湿透). She wasn't wearing any shoes or socks. The rain wet her skin through the holes in her clothes and she was making her way through the garbage, trying to find something that would be of use to her.

I walked towards her and told her to wait for me there while I ran home to get her something. On getting home, I took off my shoes, which I really loved, wrapped them up in a plastic cover and ran to give them to the teenage girl on the street.

The girl looked surprised as if she was not used to this kind of kindness. She thanked me in a trembling (颤抖的) voice.

A famous musician who lives down the street corner stopped his car and smiled when he saw what happened. The two watchmen who saw me do this talked and gave me friendly looks.

Although I had to wear my dad's shoes, I was satisfied even if they were a bit large for my feet, because I knew the girl would walk comfortably wearing the shoes. That day I learned that letting go off the little things we own can be a big help to others.

(4) What can we learn from the passage? A. It is important to get others' praise. B. It is no use giving things to others. C. It is a pity to lose favorite things. D. It is good to help others.

More than a third of small towns in Georgia lost population in the last year alone, highlighting the challenges of reviving rural areas. New census (人口普查) estimates show that Camilla fell below 5, 000 residents. Sparks fell below 2, 000, and Milan fell to 661 residents for a loss of 7% of its population. All three towns are in South Georgia.

"Many of the young people in these communities graduate from high school and don't come back. They go to college, whatever, they don't come back," said David Bridges, head of its Center for Rural Prosperity and Innovation in Tifton.

Meanwhile, Georgia's cities are growing, having no problem drawing people from small towns and other cities. Atlanta grew more than 1% in the past year and is now nearing the half-million-resident mark.

The trend of people moving from rural to urban areas is hardly a new one——it's been going on worldwide for more than a century. But continued population losses have raised questions about whether rural areas can do anything to reverse the tide.

Rural residents can face a number of challenges including access to good jobs, transportation and health care. Manufacturing jobs have dried up in many places, while modernization and new technology means fewer people are needed for farming. And many people are deciding to have smaller families than was typical a century ago.

"The older generation is dying, the younger generation is moving away, and because there are perceived to be fewer business opportunities, financial opportunities, etc. It's very challenging to get inbound population." Bridges said.

Demographers (人口学家) expect the shift from rural to urban to continue. But there are some bright spots in rural America still. Jackson County near Athens was recently named one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation by the Census Bureau. Amazon opened a large fulfillment center there a couple of years ago. And Young Harris, near the Georgia-North Carolina border, has grown by more than 80% since 2010.

(1) What happened to the small towns mentioned in paragraph 1? A. Their sizes grew rapidly. B. Their population declined. C. They drew more residents. D. They raised challenges to locals.
(2) Which of the following best explains "reverse the tide" underlined in paragraph 4? A. People move from rural to urban areas. B. Small towns draw people from cities. C. Rural areas develop their economy quickly. D. Population continue to grow in urban areas.
(3) Why is David Bridges quoted? A. To offer more evidence. B. To draw a conclusion. C. To show his contribution. D. To give part of the reasons.
(4) What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Jackson County is the best town in the US. B. Rural towns will keep growing to larger ones. C. Others will follow the lead of these bright spots. D. There can be measures to help rural towns grow.

"Can you imagine?" Diébédo Francis Kéré said to NPR, "I was born in Burkina Faso, a little village where there was no school. And my father wanted me to learn how to read and write very simply because then I could translate or read him his letters."

The first Black winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize was as surprised as anyone else to be selected for the field's most famous prize. Many architects had openly supposed that 2022 would be Sir David Adjaye's year, who is best known for designing notable buildings as the Nobel Peace Center in Norway. Kéré, who is based in Berlin but centers much of his practice in Africa, has been—until now—far lesser known, with buildings that include primary schools and a healthcare clinic.

When he was twenty, in 1985, Kéré earned a scholarship to study carpentry in Berlin. But he also attended night school and was admitted to Technische Universität Berlin, from which he graduated in 2004 with an advanced degree in architecture. He was still a student when he designed and built the innovative Gando Primary School.

Kéré's architectural practice was inspired by his own experience attending school with around 100 other children in a region with temperatures over 100 F. "It's very hot inside. And there was no light, while outside, the sunlight was abundant. I think, one day I should make it better. I was thinking about space, about room, about how I could feel better." In his designs for Gando Primary School and Naaba Belem Goumma Secondary School, Kéré drew on traditional building materials such as local clay mixed with concrete, and emphasized shade and shadows, making spaces bright enough and letting air in, and thus reducing the need for air conditioning. He wanted the buildings to evoke the sense of an oasis (绿洲), a place for many children, to be happy and learn how to read and write.

(1) Why did the Pritzker Architecture Prize of 2022 come out as a surprise? A. Because it is the most famous prize. B. Because the winner only designs schools. C. Because another competitor was more famous. D. Because Kéré wasn't first selected as a candidate.
(2) What inspired Kéré's architecture work? A. His academic training in Berlin. B. Hardship in his early childhood. C. An architectural contest. D. His experience traveling abroad.
(3) Which of the following best describes Kéré as an architect? A. Creative and universal. B. Caring and practical. C. Determined and ambitious. D. Devoted and productive.
(4) What can be inferred about the schools designed by Kéré? A. They only use traditional materials. B. They need no air-conditioning. C. They are well-lit and cool. D. They are built on oases.
