Born in New York in 1918, scientist Gertrude B. Elion had an impressive career, during which she developed medicines to cure many major diseases. Elion spent her early youth in Manhattan. She attended senior high school and had, in her words, an unbelievable thirst for knowledge.

Influenced by the death of her grandfather, who died of cancer, Elion entered Hunter College at the age of 15 and graduated in chemistry at the age of 19. She had difficulty finding employment after graduation because many laboratories refused to hire women chemists. She found a part-time job as a lab assistant and went back to school at New York University. Elion worked as a high school teacher for a few years after finishing work on her master's degree.

The start of World War II created more opportunities for women. At the age of 26, Elion was able to get a job at Burroughs Welcome, where she began a 40-year partnership with Dr. George H. Hitchings. Her thirst for knowledge impressed Dr. Hitchings, and he permitted her to take on more responsibility.

Elion and Hitchings set out on a course of creating medicines by studying the chemical composition of diseased cells. Rather than relying on old trial-and-error methods, they used the differences in biochemistry between normal human cells and pathogens(病原体) to design medicines. In all, Elion obtained 45 patents on medicine and was awarded 23 honorary degrees.

In 1988, Elion received the Nobel Prize for Medicine, together with George H. Hitchings and Sir James Black. She received other awards for her work, including the National Medal of Science in 1991, and that same year, she became the first woman to be absorbed into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. In 1997, she was awarded the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award.

Kids and teens are often dismissive of praise from their parents. I am sure that parents out there can relate to this, as we all have been told at one time or another by one or several of our kids, "Stop it, Mom. " or even, "You're just saying that because you are my parents, and you have to say that. " I can assure you, though, that they are listening. They will probably not thank you for this praise until they are in their twenties, but don't let that stop you from praising them during their childhood and teen years. Just be careful how you praise them. A little praise may go a long way-especially if it is the right kind of praise.

It appears that the way to go is to praise their efforts according to a study by Brummelman of Utrecht University in the Netherlands and his colleagues. These researchers concluded that kids should be praised primarily for their efforts, rather than for their personal characteristics, because if they are praised for their efforts, then a poor performance is more likely to be seen as a glitch (小故障), rather than a valid reflection of who they are as individuals.

Let's think about this together. If you are a teenager or a child of any age and are constantly told how brilliant you are, then when you do poorly on a test or a few tests, you may feel like you have suddenly lost your status as brilliant and may now feel ashamed that you are merely average or even dumb. If you are a girl who is constantly being told how beautiful you are, then on a day when you don't look or feel so good, you may decide that you are unattractive. This is the problem that develops when we are praising our kids for global personality characteristics that they can't always live up to.

(1) The intended readers of this passage are ____. A. doctors B. parents C. teachers D. children
(2) Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text? A. All children should be praised. B. There's no need to praise kids and teens. C. Praise should be beyond children's expectations. D. Teens often pay no attention to their parents' praise.
(3) Which of the following is the right kind of praise according to the text? A. You are a great artist. B. You are very intelligent. C. You have a special gift for music. D. Your painting has indeed improved due to your efforts.
(4) The underlined word "dumb" in the last paragraph can be replaced by A. stupid B. unique C. curious D. honest
(5)  What's the text mainly about? A. The reasons for praising kids and teens. B. The right ways to praise kids and teens. C. The benefits of praising kids and teens. D. The importance of praising kids and teens.

A letter written to a 12-year old girl in Lithuania was delivered in December, almost 51 years after it was sent.

Now in her 60s, Genovefa Klonovska said after being handed the letter, "I thought that someone was pranking me. " The letter included a handmade, colored rose and two paper dolls. It was sent to Klonovska by a young girl in Poland. They exchanged letters in what is known as a pen pal program-when people write letters to each other without actually meeting.

The letter, together with 17 others, was discovered this past summer when a wall was taken down in a former post office in Vilnius.

The letters, from the late 1960s and early 1970s, were likely hidden by a postal worker after he searched them for money or valuables, Vilutis said. The senders were family members or pen pals from places such as Australia, Poland, or Russia. Street names and their numbering have changed in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. Post office workers spent months looking for the people who were supposed to receive the letters—the recipients. Only five recipients were found. In several cases, children of dead recipients were handed a lost letter.

Deimante Zebrauskaite, head of Lithuania Post, said "We felt a moral duty to do this. "

Zelrauskaite added, "One lady compared the experience to receiving a message from a bottle thrown into sea. People were emotional(动情的). Some people felt they saw a part of daily life of their dead parents. "

In the letter to Klonovska, sent from Koczary in Poland, a girl named Ewa complains buses no longer reach her village. Now in her 60s, Klonovska has no memory of Ewa. She probably wrote Ewa after finding her address in an advertisement for pen-pals in a newspaper. Their relationship stopped after the letter was not delivered. "The loss was not life-changing, "said Klonovska. She then asked, "What if they delivered a lost letter from a suitor(求婚者)to his love, and their wedding never happened?"

(1) The word "pranking" in paragraph 2 means_________. A. playing a trick on B. paying attention to C. finding fault with D. getting in touch with
(2) Why were some people emotional when they received the letters? A. The arrival of the lost letters had been long expected. B. They knew more about their parents through the letters. C. A postal worker hid the letters for a selfish purpose. D. Postal workers overcame difficulties to find the recipients.
(3) What did Klonovska try to express in the last paragraph? A. All these letters were important reminders of memories. B. She didn't mind if the post office gave her the letter. C. The course of her life would never change for the lost letter. D. The lost letters could have caused serious consequences.
