1.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

I became aware of my stutter (结巴) when I was around 9, in the fourth grade. I began to see how other people viewed me. When the teacher asked the whole class questions, I never raised my hand though I knew the answer, because I knew I would stutter. Some kids would tell me that I talked funny, ask why I didn't talk normally, or laugh at me. As soon as that started to happen, I became more introverted (内向的).

It wasn't until the summer of 2015, before freshman year at high school. All my friends and my parents encouraged me to join the high school football team. I owed much to them, especially Coach Lane who taught me how to play football. He took the time-and had the patience-to actually teach me what to do, how to do it and how to understand the concepts of play.

In junior year, I started my first game for the high school team. I had a very good season and in January 2018, I signed the University of North Carolina. The older we get, the more of an understanding we have about the world and other people. So the first time my teammates in college heard me talk and heard that I stuttered, they did not say a thing. That was a big deal to me because I was so used to people making comments. My teammates actually tell me to slow down because talking faster causes me to stutter more. It's really helped me develop confidence.

Whenever I go back home to Georgia, I volunteer with children at my church, including those who have learning disabilities. I like to do that to inspire them with confidence. I had confidence issues when I was a kid because of my stutter, so I just don't want them to have to go through what I did. In the future, I would like to start a foundation to give back to people who stutter and create a program where kids all across the world who have a stutter can have a safe space.

(2) What was one cause of the author's decision to play football? A. Guidance from coaches. B. Great interest in football. C. Expectations from parents. D. Encouragement from friends.

(4) Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. An Unconfident Child B. An Introverted Volunteer C. An Admirable Coach D. An Inspiring Footballer

Devon—A three-year-old labradoodle named Digby has been praised after he saved a woman who was thinking of taking her own life on a bridge.

Digby is an Australian labradoodle, a type of dog, whose hypoallergenic (低致敏性的) coat is less likely to start allergic reactions in those he communicates with. He was hired by the fire service in 2018 not for his ability to remove bombs but to relieve stress and anxiety among firefighters who had attended unpleasant call-outs. He also works with vulnerable (脆弱的) people in the community as part of a "pets for therapy" programme.

So when the emergency services were called to a vulnerable woman on a motorway bridge, a firefighter had the bright idea to take Digby along.

"We were at the incident as part of a multi-agency response. Police negotiators were speaking with the woman but the situation was becoming increasingly worrying. When Digby arrived, the young woman immediately swung her head round to look, and smiled," said a spokesman for Devon and Somerset fire service. "This got a conversation started. The woman was asked if she would like to come and meet Digby if she came back over the railings (金属栏杆), which we are pleased to say she did. It was Digby who eventually got her out of harm's way."

"The use of therapy dogs has been scientifically proven to help people who are exposed to challenging situations in their lives such as ill health or learning disability," the spokesman added.

Digby has also been trained to go into schools and hospitals for Pets As Therapy charity. Other services have also started adopting therapy dogs to assist in various situations.

(1) Why is Digby chosen as a therapy dog? A. He can remove bombs. B. He can bring relief to people. C. He can deal with emergencies. D. He can communicate with people.
(2) What can be learned from the text? A. Digby was finally adopted by the woman. B. Therapy dogs can cure people of illnesses. C. Therapy dogs are now popular in various services.

D. The use of therapy dogs was started by a firefighter.
(3) Where is the text probably from? A. A news report. B. A science magazine. C. A guidebook. D. A government document.

Humans spend approximately one-third of their lives sleeping, which means that by the time you reach 15 years old, you will have slept for about 5 years! However, the question remains: why do we do it? Sleep has long been a puzzle for people, leading scientists to explore its mysteries. They have found that during sleep, our brains and bodies do not simply shut down; instead, complex processes unfold.

What causes sleepiness? It's caused by our biological clock releasing a special chemical signal at the same time daily, signaling it''s time to wind down. The feeling of heaviness comes from the buildup of old nerve messenger chemicals. When the message gets too much, the brain senses that it's time to sleep. During sleep, the body breaks down and clears away these old messengers, preparing for a fresh start.

As you slip into sleep, your heart and breathing slow down, and your brain ignores the most sounds and surroundings around you. Despite appearances, your brain remains active during sleep, performing essential tasks. Throughout the night, you cycle through light, deep, and REM(rapid eye movement) sleep stages every 90 minutes. Early on, slow-wave sleep is the primary stage, aiding in brain cleaning, while towards morning,REM sleep increases, leading to vivid dreams.         During sleep, your body repairs and grows, creating new skin, muscle, and other tissues with released chemicals. It's also a time for hormone(荷尔蒙)production, aiding growth, and boosting the immune(免疫)system to fight infections.

Scientists still have many questions about sleep, such as why some people need more sleep than others and how certain animals can function with less sleep. They aim to find ways to improve sleep quality. However, one thing is clear: getting enough sleep is vital for health and intelligence. Think of sleep as a free magic potion that strengthens you, aids growth, boosts immunity, and enhances intelligence, happiness, and creativity. Simply lie down and rest to enjoy these benefits.

(1) What inference can be drawn from scientists'findings about sleep? A. Sleep serves no purpose. B. Sleep has fundamental processes, C. Sleep involves complex processes. D. Sleep has minimal impact on brain function.
(2) What is the primary function of the body 's "biological clock"? A. Determining the best time for sleep. B. Controlling chemicals within the body. C. Managing eating and digestion patterns. D. Regulating daytime and nighttime activities.
(3) What is the main focus of the third paragraph? birh-yno vist8mxonq A. Describing the different stages and functions of sleep. B. Discussing the benefits of daytime activities for overall health. C. Exploring the effects of inadequate sleep on the body and mind. D. Analyzing the impact of stress on the immune system during sleep.
(4) Which of the following best describes the structure of the passage? A. Narrative of personal sleep experiences. B. Comparison of human and animal sleep patterns. C. Imaginary stories illustrating the advantages of sleep. D. Explanation of sleep importance, with body processes described.
